View Full Version : Is Jimmy Rollins really that amazing defensively?

There's an article posted on the MLB website talking about his defensive prowess.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090921&content_id=7074410&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

However, they are using fielding percentage as a comparison tool, saying his is second to none other than Omar Vizquel. But his UZR has been constantly among the best at SS in the last 3-4 years.

Any thoughts?

Ya see a player like Rawlins is that he gets to more balls than the average short stop, so he has the chance to make more errors. He is just good.

I refuse to believe any article that uses FP as its prime example of how good defensively someone is.

Great logic.

I absolutely love the fools like this who can't think for themselves. Just because it isn't a completely accurate statistic doesn't mean it is meaningless and it certainly doesn't mean it is negatively associated with good defense like some of the number wizards in here seem to believe. If you don't agree with a claim that is made, either look into it yourself and make the judgment based on your standards or keep your lazy, pointless opinion to yourself.

If you actually did the research, you'd find that the "superior statistics" such as UZR/150 (1st in the ML) also support the argument that he is one of the best defensive shortstops in the game.

As for the comparison to Pedroia, not really. Rollins is in the top tier of shortstops (if not the best) whereas Pedroia is in the second tier of second basemen (a position that is less difficult by nature).

According to UZR, Rollins has been the second best defensive shortstop over the past three years- he'll save about 10 runs a year with his glove. Plus/Minus has him about the same. The Fans' Scouting Report has him as being a top 5 defensive SS annually.

So yes, Rollins is that good defensively.

I almost stabbed myself in the face during the WBC when they had him DHing because El Capitan wanted his SS playing time.

so he's among the best for active SS, but how would he rank all-time?

third to Omar and Ozzie?

for those who say he's overrated, I agree that he's overrated as a hitter, but not as a shortstop

I never said i didn't think he was a great defensive shortstop and there are many arguments that can be made to agree that he is, but why someone would chose the most useless one is beyond me.

J-roll is overrated as a hitter, but as a fielder he is second 2 none imo. Even in his hitting slumps he gets into, every game he usually does something with his glove that makes u very happy he is still in the lineup.

You must be a fan of the Nationals! :D
They got the worst fielding percentage, but hell, you refuse to acknowledge FP, so they look like studs out there hey

I'm going to go ahead and trust UZR and UZR/150 over your eyes. In this case they agree, although he hasn't been quite as dominant this year as in years past.
