Did anyone realize that the Twolves selected Ray Allen in 1996 and traded him to the Bucks for Marbury?

I forgot all about that. Anyone remember why did they that? They needed a shooting guard as well and the Twolves already had Garnett.

I remember that.

I was too young to remember the exact circumstances of the situation, though.

Probably because Garnett and Marbury were friends.

Yes, Marbury wanted to go to Minnesota, Milwaukee wanted Ray Allen and knew that Minnesota wanted Marbury. So they went ahead and drafted Marbury to get another pick out of the deal.

And than he *****ed his way out because he wanted to be the star and not play in Garnett's shadow.

Think how good we could have been if it wasn't for his selfishness:facepalm:.

I think the Bucks got Ray Allen and a first round pick. In hindsight that was a pretty good deal for the Bucks.

I think you're giving to much credit to Marbury contributing to wins.

they drafted him one pick after Marbury, whom they wanted. They then traded Ray Allen for Marbury, and the Wolves also threw in a protected pick.
Yet another mistake in the McHale era. However, they didn't know Marbury would demand a trade after KG signed that contract that almost single handedly started the lockout. Marbury was not happy that he was not going to get the same money, and wanted out. Its too bad, Marbury, KG, Gugliotta, and the rest of that roster, had potential to be a good team.

Who did they get with that draft pick? Or was that forfeited in the whole 'Joe Smith' saga?

I remember the playoff game where we played the Suns, and after our fourth loss of that series, Charles Barkley came up to the young stars (21 years old?) Marbury and KG and told them if they stick together, they will win many championships...I remember the Wolves beating Seattle in a playoff game and Marbury went to center court and got on his knees and kissed the T-Wolves logo....things were supposed to be so good for those guys...to bad

Did you realize that The bucks drafted Dirk Nowitzki with the 9th pick in the 1998 draft and immediately traded him to The mavs for Robert Traylor who was drafted 6th by the mavs.

It was the T-Wolves who initiated the trade. They gave up Allen and a future 1st round pick for Starbury.

They didnt have a PG the previous year, so I think that was the direction they wanted to go. The Bucks took Starbury 1 spot before the Wolves took Allen. If I remember correctly, Starbury was thought to have much more NBA potential thaN Ray

IndiansFan337

The T'Wolves took Allen because the trade had already been agreed upon for Marbury. If they hadn't already arranged to acquire Marbury, they very well may not have chosen Allen with that draft pick.

Should we go through every team and look at who they picked and who they missed or just the Wolves? I think we'll stick with just the wolves, they seem to be the butt of many jokes here on PSD.

If your meaning he would be a good shooting guard on the roster then dont forget they drafted B.Roy and traded him for R.Foye. BUT, without Foye, Minnesota wouldnt have made the trade and probably wouldn't have Rubio. And if they didn't pick Rubio then he would probably be in the NBA this year.

You could throw a "What if" on every statment then random threads could be started all the time... oh wait, they already are.

Marbury and Garnett could of been a pretty sick duo for years to come. It's too bad Marbury wanted out, or at least i think he wanted out.

Maybe Minnesota wanted to please Garnett. It was a good idea to keep Garnett, but a bad idea to give in to his demands.

Its that fool babcock, Mchales boyfriend. Hes got no basketball sense and a history of stupiness, I remember he came to toronto as our GM and drafted Arrujo ahead of AI and Josh Smith and then traded VC for Joey Graham, Then he signed Rafer Alston to a 36 mill contract and traded him for mike james lol. Complete moron! We fired him and then he signed back with the T wolves as an asst GM were they the next year signed Mike James and the folloowing year trade Foye for Roy.

He had a seperated shoulder and had to be wheeled off in a wheelchair? Wow thats really sad. I played 4 weeks with both shoulders seperated in football my junior year.

Which demands? His contract demands? He was signed before the salary cap was installed. We couldnt afford to pay both Garnett and Marbury that amount of money once the salary cap was in play. So Marbury forced his way out.

For everyone that thinks it was a bad idea to draft Marbury here were his stats for the just over 2 years he was with us.

167 games

16.92 PPG
8.34 APG
2.7 RPG
2.96 Turnovers per game
1.14 Steals per game

41% FG
32% 3 point
73% FT

Its not like he was a bad player for us at all in the years he was with us.

u dont remember ray allen leading the big 3 to the eastern conference finals only to be cheated out in 7 games because the world wanted to see AI vs the lakers? he didnt miss a game in his first 5 years for the bucks, he was the leader of that team and they actually put together some pretty decent records, including the aforementioned 50 win season.

well I could see why it made sense at the time. Marbury and KG were best buds and marbury was a great young point. He, KG, and that other guy did make a great team. Unfortunately marbury was (is) all about him so it work.

looking back down the T-wolvess would have like to have kept allen. He , KG, and Billups ( they had him too) could have caused some damage
