Dam, tanking didnt really help me with my draft spot. it would of been nice to get Lebron a little later and have a high 2nd round pick :(

I'll keep Lebron. Still thinking bout Duncan.

Well you get the 2nd overall pick ion the 3rd round. That's really where all the action begins in a keeper league. I'm liking my draft position...I only wish I could have won a few more games and made the playoffs last year. Drafting in the middle would have had more meaning then.

So does that mean you can only "keep" a player once?

The league has been created and email invites have been distributed. Same rules and roster numbers as last year. Please use your PSD name as your team name. Do not give the password to anyone. I'll delete anyone from the league who I don't know.

i dont know .... not much respect for a guy that purposely tanks ... really we should put a rule in to avoid this in the future .... its a pretty ****** thing to do when it comes to sportsmanship ...

Just a question ... if we "keep" a player ... does that mean that they are automatically my first pick ...

IE. Say i was going to "keep" 2 players Granger(1st pick); Nene(2nd pick) - can release granger and use 1st pick on someone else - but keep my second best player (nene) as pick 2?

Like i understand it would be gay if i could take Granger (my best player) and move him to the 2nd round .... but since i am letting my best player go - i think it makes sense to be able to keep my second best player at round 2.

Because - this would mean that in order to keep your second best player (at 2nd round) you automatically have to keep the best ranked guy (number 1) or else you lose out ... cause im not gonna pick nene 3rd overall ....

Good point star. Its a rule that probably should have been spelled out in the past. Currently we have a rule that if you're not active you get cut. But let's make it more clear, no tanking allowed and if its proven the punishment will be that you're cut from the league. Anything that happened in the past doesn't apply to this new rule.

You get two keeper tags:

Keeper tag one = 1st round pick
Keeper tag two = 2nd round pick

Its that simple. If you use both tags you forfeit your first two picks. There are no loop holes here to exploit. Tags are not reusable and you cannot use the second keeper tag(only used in the second round) unless you use your first keeper tag. Who's the "best player" is open to interpretation and we're not going there star. If you want to keep your second best player then use your first keeper tag and forfeit your 1st rounder.

I am waiting for everyone from last year to register. I will send out another email to the league on Friday asking that you all register. I will set a deadline for this. After that we will determine how many slots are vacant(Two right now) and then we will vote on the seven current potential candidates I have, to decide who gets an invitation to join us. This will all be done privately through PMs.

what is the definition of "tanking"? Let's say I am in 12th place and you are in 7th place. If I have Bargs (ranked 25) and TJ Ford (ranked 52) and I trade them for Dwight Howard (ranked #5 but has an injury and is done for the season), am I tanking? I am trying to get a possible keeper for next season. My team will tank losing the two above players, would I be kicked out of the league?

what is the definition of "tanking"?

I would define "tanking" as:

A.) Purposely dropping healthy well ranked players for nobodies. Grabbing an injured Agent 0 would not be tanking. It would be obvious that a claim such as that was done for keeper reasons, not in an attempt to tank games. If a guy filled his roster with injured players then one would have to present that to the league for review...
B.) Purposely not starting players.
C.) Admitting that you tanked.

And we need to be reasonable. Someone might miss a week for what ever reason and not update their roster or/and someone might add a few guys they are good enough to be potential keepers but are injured but that doesn't mean they're making a play for the top draft pick. I'm talking about blatantly obvious tanking. Again, this would have to be proven and it would require a league vote at season end. I have no problem booting someone at the end of the season who hasn't updated their roster since December but I am not deciding on this sort of thing by myself.

Let's say I am in 12th place and you are in 7th place. I am trying to get a possible keeper for next season. My team will tank losing the two above players, would I be kicked out of the league?

Bad trades should be vetoed by the league if they really are bad. If they make it past the league then you can't deem dealing good players for an injured player as "tanking" because the league had a chance to stop it and did not act. That should take precedence.

Another option would be to hold a lotto for the pick selection for teams outside the playoffs. Every manager gets one "ball". This way the manager who finished last has no better chance at the top pick than the manager who finished fifth last.

I'm probably going to draft a "rules page" in the first post on page one over the weekend to to make everything clear. When I do this I would love input from you guys to make it better than the first attempt I make.

Two days before the draft. I would like time to prep the draft.

I thought the draft would be random either way. I didn't expect to get the first pick. If we just make it random then there would be no purpose to tanking.

I feel it makes it more interesting, adds some history and as we've seen with this league, it creates better competition with time than just tossing out league for everybody and anybody to join. The first year I ran this we had a lot of guys quitting on it well before the season was over and last year we only had 2 out of 14 do that. People keep trying because they want back in the next year and on top of that we've accumulated a lot of smart, highly competitive managers. Last year we had the toughest league I've ever played in and I've been doing this since '03 in multiple leagues each year. If you want a highly competitive league year after year then keeper is the way to go unless there's money on the line. Keeper leagues are more about keeping good managers in the game than the players they get to carry over, that's just a reward for staying in the game year after year. What are you're thoughts on that?

i think that we can improve this league.

We can all agree that for the most part we are all avid basketball fans and the purpose is to have along term league so we can "flex our GM abilities"

I think we should put more emphasis on our teams long term.

I see 2 ways to do this ....

1. We know that the league is not won with the top 2 - 3 picks but with the latter round picks ... i propose that nobody can protect the top 2 ranked players on their team (based on yahoo rankings) - so all of these players go back into the pool. but can protect up to 8 of their other players. This way when we draft we mark off whoever is gone (protected) and we all add the balance of the roster. In the beggining rounds we will all be picking superstars (kobe, lebrons) but this way each year a different person gets a different superstar - PLUS ... we can build a team identity ... - IE. if i have a historically great rebounding team i can maintain this by protecting alot of great mid round rebounders. It will also make trades more significant as we are playing for a roster for the LONG term and i WONT want to dump 3 mid round guys (55 - 60 + 70) for a superstar because then next year i am screwed cause i cant "protect" the superstar - this actually becomes like a rental player thing - as i would ONLY do this if i am top 4 team and want to make a championship push.

2. We are all allowed to protect any 6 guys on our roster - indefinitely. Therefore - yes whoever gets lebron has an advantage for a long time. BUT it will put more emphasis on drafting rookies (for example beasley - i have him but i didnt really get to watch him grow - if i could protect him for the next 2 - 3 years - he might be a great fantasy player) AND it will cause us to try to trade our vets to a contender for some young talent.

in the end - my points are to try to make "keeper" league more meaningful ... instead of just drafting then trading everyone at the end for 1 superstar. I feel like at the end of last season nobody cared about the makeup of their roster except for their top 2 guys.

I don't really like either option. Its too complicated. I think the way we're doing it is fine. I'm up for changing how draft order is decided but I'm not revamping the whole league like that...For the most part the way this league is run is similar to other keeper leagues at PSD and standard keeper leagues(2-3 keepers) you would see anywhere. If teams are allowed to keep half their rosters new managers won't stand a chance. Its not fair, a manager can ride the coattail of one good draft into the unforeseen future rather than having to put his knowledge to the test each year. Keep your drafting skills sharp star because that's too drastic and won't fly here. :)

P.S. I don't remember people dumping half their roster for one guy. All the trades were deemed fair by the majority of the league or they would not have gone through.

FYI,

Based on the little response to do with deciding new members I've decided to go ahead and bypass this vote and send out invites to two people who deserve an invite:

- Mile High Champ
- Swoop

If you don't like this idea then let me know. I'm all ears.

I've also sent out PM's to the four remaining members who have yet to register. If one of them isn't coming back I have another person(s) ready to take their spot(s) as well.

Was there any public invitation for the league?

The common theme seems to be "LD, why the hell are you adding guys who haven't been at PSD that long?"

We have three options.

A.) Toss MHC and Swoop from the league and vote on who gets in based on the list provided above.
B.) Toss Swoop from the league and do the vote.
C.) Keep it as is.

Its a free league and I don't think either scenario is going to be life altering to anyone involved so let me know. If I have to do a "my bad" to MHC and Swoop and call the vote then I will do it and do it with an apology. If we do the vote mine are going to these two guys obviously. I was trying to get the teams wrapped up by making a couple good picks for the league. I just see a vote failing because no one responds to anything for some reason. Everybody on vacation? I'm glad I called a late draft date...

My keeper pick is someone dependent on what everyone else is doing. Deron is in that range where, if everyone is keeping high ranked players, I may want to hold on to him, if not, I'll take my luck in the draft. Being below everyone else in the draft, I don't think it would be a good idea to decide just yet.

I hear you. There will be some big time names available but for me personally, I'm not doing better than Durant and Howard. Those two are both arguably top five picks this season.

hey the draft order's been changed from 'custom to random'; does that mean we're not playing with "keeper picks" as well?

LD V2.0

There are keepers for those who want to use keeper tags on players they had last season. I will be arranging the draft later this week when I get a chance to do it... It's not a fast process. It will be a snaking draft based on the inverted standings of last season. All new managers draft last in round one and then as its a snaking draft, they will be among the first to draft in round two. That way its fair.

UPDATE: Yahoo has made changes to its commish tool page. Setting up keepers and the order took very little time. The order is set. It was decided based on:

1.) Inverted standings
2.) The order in which new members joined the league.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW DRAFT ORDER AND KEEPERS (http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/nba/97879/draftresults)

If you need to update your keepers in any way please do so ASAP by PMing me or through email. New members don't get keepers because they've had no roster to date... Please review the above page to insure I have not made a mistake in assigning you a keeper.

EDIT:

hey the draft order's been changed from 'custom to random'; does that mean we're not playing with "keeper picks" as well?

I'm not sure how he did it but it looks like sectum was responsible for that...I'm the only person with commish privileges so that's interesting...Regardless, the draft is set now.

It doesn't really matter because at the time I had not set the draft up yet but if you go here:

"Oct 10 9:17pm Draft Order changed from 'custom' to 'random' secterm"

Maybe it was where we had an odd number of teams after you joined and Yahoo actually changed the setting because of it and then linked it to your name? I don't know but again it doesn't matter because we have a full league now and the draft is set up and just waiting for us to start on Saturday.

How about Randolph and Salmons for Scola and Rondo. 4th and 7th rounders for 5th and 6th rounders. Gives you a SG in Salmons, and will Gorden gone, Salmons will pick up the slack even more. I guess by 'poor' I meant that it would not possibly interest me. Too many times in these pools, guys just look at what they'd want off your roster and offer anything. If it doesn't help me, why would I trade just to make one ? In the other offer I received, I would give up a SG and a PF/C for a SG and a C, each of lesser value. If I'm trading C for C there has to be something to help me too. Like I said I thought you made the other one too Conway. If someone persists with poor offers, I make a really stupid one back.

Some people make silly trade offers but some of us are pretty reasonable and not just wasting time. Conway has been active on the trade front and we just made a Blockbuster deal including the likes of Al Jefferson and J Kidd. I think that becomes obvious before long which people are trying to steal your players and which people are open to truly negotiate reasonable deals. It is very satisfying coming to an agreement on a deal after negotiating a bit, cause it shows that both guys are on a similar wave length.

Well, there is a reason he is 100% owned and is has nothing to do with his Yahoo rank, it has to do with all the fantasy managers. KG is considered a top 3 fantasy PF. The only guy you have that is 100% owned is Chris Paul...is he also overrated. A player's ownership speaks to how MANAGERS (like you and I) in the fantasy league view the player. I could talk about guys on your roster that are also overrated, but I wouldn't cause that is somewhat disrespectful as it could possibly bring down the trade value of your guys.

It isn't like I came in and started saying that everyone should want to take T-Mac off my hands or something. I wouldn't do that, I know that a lot of you know better.

And yes, KG is owned 100%, but so are a lot of players. I am not saying he doesn't have value, he is a very valuable player but I don't think he will be a top 25 fantasy player any longer.

I opened the door for trades and I made it clear that I am shopping two of my PF's (cause I have 6 eligible PF's and only 2 eligible C's), not for people to diminish my players. And I'm not going rip into your team cause there is no point. Well Iggy and David West aren't 100% owned. Maybe you can't understand the statistics, but generally speaking the top tier guys are 100% owned, followed by lower numbers, get it  . Their are league that have very small numbers of managers and small rosters where some pretty good players don't get selected. But guys like KG always get selected cause they are top tier. BTW, watch Pau Gasol's numbers will go down with Andrew Bynum expected to have a breakout year and Artest taking up more of the Lakers scoring than Ariza did. Gasol will be the most overrated of the 100% guys this year.

I can tell you from past experience, you have to prepared for some talk in this thread. You started talking KG, as you can see I am not the only one who is going to respond about not wanting to pay top ranked dollar for him. If you want, next time you bring up one of your players that I have an opinion of, I will stay quiet but don't expect others to do the same.

What if I came on today and said I wanted a top 20 player for Odom because of the game he had yesterday? I would expect you and the others to express their opinions on it. I didn't express my opinion so KG's value in this league will go down. People will make their own decisions on what his value is, I spoke it because I think his value will go down. Same with that other player you and I talked about through PMs. I think he is over-rated right now and I wouldn't expect anyone to pay top dollar for him.

Well either way, KG probably wont be top 10 fantasy like he was back in his T-Wolves days, but I expect him to be top 20 for sure. I was very, very pleased with the beautiful stat line he put up last night. He puts up good numbers across the board. Low PF's, high FT's, high steals are all things that most big men don't provide alot of, but KG does it all. He also offers nice blocks as well. I am very happy to keep him, my main goal is to try and better balance my line-up with more C eligibility as I am hella stacked with PF's galore.

I'm not sure you're going to sell players onto managers by dropping stats about % owned. There is a lot more that people think about in here, as in, knee surgeries for example... He's also getting kind of old to be dealing out a potential keeper pick for him.

For me, if a manager is really trying hard to sell a player on me I like the saying "you like him so much, you keep him." :)

As for Randolph, if you were so sold on him why would you not keep him until his value goes up and then get a better deal? Why praise him and then try to unload him on skeptical owners? No doubt he has a good situation and lots of upside but he has yet to prove anything.I like him but I wouldn't give up a proven top 50 commodity for him.

Bottom line is it came down to eligibility. There were going to be nights where I was going have to choose between playing Randolph and KG (both only PF eligible) and I didn't want to have to do that. I am a big Randolph fan. Will he be top 50, hard to say just yet. But he will have a breakout year and will he be ATLEAST top 80, most definitely. Now that I have traded Randolph, I am no longer as interested in shopping KG. KG doesn't have a history of injury, he simply had one knee issue last year that has been repaired and he is now 100%. I would say guys like Arenas, Gerald Wallace, Bosh, Amare, Devin Harris, etc, are even more injury prone, and people have no problem paying top dollar for those guys. KG is probably one of the toughest guys in the league and he is looking to prove himself as back to the old KG, so I am fairly confident that he will be worth the 16th pick that I used on him.

I'm just telling you that this is a keeper league, KG is getting old and he's coming back from a knee surgery. That leads me you downgrade him a little on my board. Arenas went in round 3 so people aren't paying top dollar for him. G.Wallace went at the end of round 2 but I would not have taken him there. I could speak on the other three but there's no point. KG is getting old and is coming back from a knee surgery. You got him in round two so you didn't overpay for him... I just wouldn't offer a guy in the first two rounds for him because I would be looking down the road to who my keepers would be next season and at that point KG might be a 3rd or 4th round guy as he will be 34 then and age is going to have to creep its head soon...

Sure, that isn't unreasonable. I probably would have been happy taking a top 30 pick in a multi player deal for him...that is before I traded Randolph. At this point, I am quite content to hold on to KG now that I have balanced out my eligibilities.

Right. Well, Aldridge and Bargnani are a toss up. Prince is a lot better fantasy option than Noc. I offered you Bass and another for Noc. I think that was a lot more fair than Prince for Noc. You're not getting Prince for Noc. Noc is going to be alright this year. I like him because he's an all round player. If you're very high on him then you should keep him I guess because I won't be over paying for a guy who will land on the end of my bench. The reason you aren't getting anywhere with me is because I'm not going to come away from a trade with the raw end of a deal.

No question that Prince is a better fantasy option than Noc. But no effin way is Bargs rated as high as Aldridge. Look at their fantasy rating from last year. Look at their fantasy ratings over their careers. That isn't a toss up. Bargs never gets drafted ahead of Aldridge for a reason. A toss up in your head, maybe, but not in the minds of the majority. It was a fair trade, especially since Noc is nearly certain to be atleast top 140 this year.

Well, there are three ways of creating the winning roster. 1)Good Draft 2)Luck 3)Trades. Since the only thing we have control over at this point is trades, then why the heck not. I had a low draft position, however I am a fan of my drafting and the trades I've made and I think I've improved my team. It's kinda hard to put together a top notch team when one starts at a disadvantage (no keepers and non top 12 pick). But just like everyone else, I'm hear to win.

BTW, the turd we were talking about the other day had a triple double while Peja continues to struggle. I suggest the Hornets simple harvest Peja for his turds and keep him off the court. Maybe keep him on a steady diet of chow mien or kung pow chicken.

Everyone might be patient and happy, but there is only one winner. If people want to win, they should be looking to make trades to give themselves a better chance.

Actually I am going to disagree about there being only one winner. After the season I had last year, as much as I would like to win, I would also be happy with having two good keepers to build around next season.

Also speaking about being patient. I forgot I sent you that offer, you just sat on it for a week then took it. Good move. I guess I can still hope that Charlie starts performing like I know he can.

Ahhh. So that is why you are so into LBJ, you want another premier keeper. Well, he's as good of a keeper as it gets.

I still see Charlie having a good year, he is the pistons only offensively big man. In fact, I acquired him from Conway for good reason. But nevertheless, I wasn't patient enough to wait on him and your offer was just sitting there laughing at me. I had actually been considering it for a while, but I needed to have a player I was willing to drop to take on the extra man. When I swung the deal prior with Mace, that gave me my expendable piece (Gortat).

Trade all you like, I'm just saying this is an active league. Personally I prefer to draft solid, play the wire and trade when I feel its needed.

Peja will be on the wire sooner rather than later, just like Noc. ;)

You might be right. Though Noc is showing some promising signs. If the guy got more playing time, he would be a fantasy beast (able to hit 3's, steals, blocks, rebs, etc). But his coach (Wesphal) seems to have a different ideas. We'll see what happens. I figured Larry Hughes was done for this year after the pre-season and the start to the reg season, but just like that he's starting and putting up beastly numbers. It's really the nutty coaches (Wesphal, Nelson, D'antoni, etc) that can really screw with predicated numbers. Not saying what they're doing might not work, just saying you don't know what's going to happen from one day to the next with those coaches.

I think Blatche will go back to the bench and will eventually be dropped again. He filled in last year and put up strong numbers at times but he can't get the PT when everyone is healthy and he's inconsistent. To his advantage, he doesn't have Etan Thomas there eating into potential minutes this season though.

But you gotta remember that he is young enough that this could be his breakout year that all young guys have. Also, while he probably won't be a 20 and 10 guy with a couple blocks all year, if I can get that kind of production for a quarter of the season, I am happy as a John in Amsterdam.

Not all young guys break out. Some guys never break out and just are role players. He's been so inconsistent in his career that I think role player could be a likely scenario...Not to mention he has to battle a lot of good players on the bench for PT when everyone gets healthy.

I get what you're saying though. You're going to ride his high for as long as you can...

Yeah I doubt when it's all said and done that he'll be a huge difference maker in me winning or losing the league or anything. I grabbed Dampier cause of consistency, I just really needed a solid rebounder. I have enough points, but I still felt dumb when he dropped 30.

That's not a good injury to have because even if he can play through it, which is probably not be a good idea, he will be in and out of the lineup and his numbers are going to deteriorate. If he elects for surgery he's out for a looong time... I just dropped him and added Mike Dunleavy. League Votes
When you select the League Votes option, accepted trades can be overturned by a vote of at least 1/3 of the members of your league. All league member votes, including the one cast by the commissioner, count equally. Even if no protests are made, the trade will not be processed until the time allotted to protest pending trades in your league has elapsed.Yahoo! To save you time let me tell you this. The only time you'll ever see me involved in a two for one is when I'm giving two players and getting one, not the other way around. The reason? Because I am confident in my bench and I am also confident in my ability to fill that empty slot with a quality player. Speaking of quality players, JJ Redick and Matt Barnes are not quality fantasy players. They both benefited from injuries on the Magic. If you want Stephen Curry you're going to have to offer me something more than crap you picked up off the wire. If I want stuff like that I'll just go to the wire and cut you out completely. Peace.

It was a fair offer. But don't worry, I won't make you any more offers. Obviously, you don't find alot of trading partners with your interpretation of what's fair. I have made several trades cause some people obviously know that I am reasonable when it comes to my roster.

Barnes's and Redick's numbers are inflated due to Carter and Lewis being out. I had ample opportunity to grab Redick off the wire but I chose not to because I felt, and still feel, the guys on my bench are worth more than him to me. Bottom line, both those guys will be back on the wire before the season is out and so I could just wait for you to drop them if I were interested in either. Stephen Curry was drafted in the top ten, he's getting accustomed to his team and the league but is going to play a big role this season and both Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson having issues with the coaching staff and both of them could potentially be traded this year, Curry is only going to be given more of a role.

It all depends on what happens with Prince. Prince was picked up right away by a manager so he might potentially be either useless or come back from injury and be Prince again. There is a manager out there that is really hoping Prince heals up. I know I would have picked Prince up if I had waiver priority (I tried but I was ousted).

Mike was ranked 19th overall two seasons ago. Prince typically hovers around the 80-110 range. Prince also had back problems and typcially those sorts of issues either go down two ways:

a.) laid up for months resting and healing
b.) play through, miss games off and on and overall consistency decreases substantially.

Not disagreeing, but I don't know if it about patients. Sometimes it's about mixing things up and building strength in different categories. It's also more involved and interesting (for me atleast) than just watching and hoping for the best.
