Would the Suns still be contenders had they had Shawn Marion instead of trading for Shaq?

Hell yea JJ would be incredible right now with the suns.

No the suns won't be contenders if they still had him because he wanted to leave so he prolly wouldn't be playing the same. And i personally think he's a terrible player, very overrated.

By no means is he a terrible player. I loved watching him play both in PHX and Toronto.

No. The suns were on the decline no matter what i think the shaq move was smart it fileld the seats and gave them a different edge.
However he just doesnt have enough left.

We would still be playoff contender (and we migh still be) if we keps Marion.
But, even if we keps JJ, I'm not sure we'd have the salary to compete with two guys making max.
This should be the Suns goal when he's a FA again. If we can deal off Richardson and replace him with JJ, he'd be the #2.
He won't get max level no matter where he goes, but our team would be stacked with the way it is now if we could add him.

It wasn't that he didn't have enough left as he had his best season in years last year. But he didn't fit the system.
He clogged the paint causing Amar'e to not be the beast he was when Coach D had Shaq and Gentry had them both for two games.

He did fill the seats and it helped give some experience to our young guys which may prove to be valuable in the future.

No one is talking about the first Suns/Cavs matchup this season.
It should be a fun one.

i think that they should have found a way to keep him happy...if they kept the players they had then they would have been CONTENDERS. Imagine this

Pg steve nash
Sg joe johnson
sf shawn marion
pf boris diaw
c amare stoudemire

bench:

raja bell
leandro barbosa
kurt thomas
tim thomas
eddie house
james jones

i think they still be contenders in 08 playoffs (when they lost in 1st rd with shaq). IMO, not last yr in 09, but still wouldve made the playoffs as the 6th or 7th seed

remember, they also had Quentin Richardson on the 2004-2005 Phoenix Suns roster. Thats when he left the clippers, had a breakout yr from the 3 pt arch, and was really getting noticed around the league, flourishing in the Suns run-and-gun style offense!

By now, they would be a middle of the pack team- age and other teams getting better would be the reason.

By middle of the pack, I mean middle of playoff contenders, maybe a 5-7 seat.

Joe Johnson would never have flourished in that lineup.
