This will be a tight race, but I can see potential issues with Portland..I don't know what will stop Dallas from this seed.

Dallas swept Portland last year in the reg season, so if it's between these two then it's gotta be Dallas.

I see chemistry problems in Portland as well actually. They thrive when Roy is controlling the ball, so it doesn't make much sense to bring in Miller, unless they're planning to bring him off the bench

It is too bad head to head record doesn't dictate seed (unless it is tied), win/loss record does.

I think Andre Miller will be a great addition to Portland. Oden and Aldridge and the remaining youth have another year of NBA experience. My vote goes to Portland.

No disrespect to Dallas though, it is a tough vote. Dallas has advantage in the starting five, but Portland's depth and younger legs will carry them through the season.

Portland. All this Dallas talk that they got better is a fluke. Ok they got Marion, but he has been getting worse and worse after leaving Phoenix, at 31 he's not going to get any better. While Portland is one of the youngest teams and will get better as they get older, the entire Dallas team is older than 29 (besides Gooden and Barea) and don't have any room to progress.

Portland.

The addition of Andre Miller puts them exactly 2 games ahead of Dallas. Not 1 game, not 3, but 2. Anything else happens, and there is another Joey Crawford in the league :)

Seriously though, this one is close. I think it depends on how well the geriatric Mavs are conditioned.

Portland.

They only play the Lakers 3 times (twice at home); and they only play the Spurs 3 times (twice at home)

Dallas plays the Lakers 4 times and plays San Antonio four times;

Dallas was four games worse than Portland even while winning every head to head match up against Portland. It is doubtful that they will be able to beat Portland in all four contests this season.

Portland gets the 4 seed by a comfortable margin.

If that team played together five years ago, Dallas would have a scary lineup. Not in 2009/10.

And if Dallas still had Devin Harris entering his prime, I would be a little more optimistic about the Mavs. Unfortunately, their starting PG entered his prime during the Clinton Administration.

Dallas didn't fall off the wagon.
Portland did fall off the turnip truck.
Unless or until proven otherwise, it's still Dallas #3 seed.
Portland is a close but less consistent #4 seed, I think.

i say Dallas. I think the addition to Shawn Marion will put them over the top. Shawn Marion struggled after he left Phenoix because he doesn't have a great PG feeding him the ball anymore but in Dallas, he has Jason Kidd. I see Shawn Marion returning to his Phenoix form (or at least close to it) playing alongside Jason Kidd. I also see Dallas turning into one of the league's top run and gun team with the addition of Shawn Marion....Kidd at PG, Terry at SG, Howard at SF, Marion at PF, and Dirk at the 5? scary.

Portland? while talented and deep...they're a collection of unproven players. They had a chance to shine in the playoffs and show how good they're really are and they failed.

Marion would be the shortest 4 in the league. :)

While I agree Dallas is the likely 3, your lineup is slightly off.
For one thing, Dirk is strictly a 4, never a 5.
Marion is strictly a 3, never a 4.

wrong. Marion play at the 4 quite often when he was with Pheonix. Dallas DO use Dirk as a 5 on occasions to create mismatches. He has a solid post game and is taller than most Cs in the league at 7 foot. As a Houston fan, I've seen Dallas play Dirk at the 5 quite a few times in order to create a mismatch against Yao. On offense, he draws Yao away from the post and on defense, he's long enough to hold his own against Yao.

I was going by the roster on NBA.com as far as the positions.
I follow you now. I think I misread your meaning the first time around. :)
Dallas can rotate Dirk to the 5 and Marion to the 4 in certain situations.
We do agree Dallas should be the 3 seed.

Marion can play the 4 and play it very well. When Amare went down with an injury he played most of his minutes at the 4. That's what makes him so versatile.

IMO Portland will be the #2 this season...they were tied for 2nd this past season and are a very young team that will have another year under their belts. They picked up a very good PG as well.
