View Full Version : Does Joe Smith Know What He's Doing With His Career?

That is the question. Dude's been like 6 or 7 different teams like the least 5 or 6 years. He's had like 2 stints with the cavs, played with the bulls, the thunder...it's just been so random for him. we know he's the quintessential ring chaser of the NBA who still hasn't gotten his 1st title yet after like 15 seasons or something like that. Does he even know where his career is headed? Does he seem to be the most confused NBA player out there today? Like what are his priorities?? What is he looking for in his final years in the NBA?

Or is this guy simply a lost basket-case???

this guy is a big, athletic man with a marketable skill (playing basketball) that he's using to make money.

hardly a lost basket-case in my opinion.

^^^^^^^^^^I agree. I like joe smith...he is just Old, but he can still play. teams want him, just not long term commitments from him.

He's still a solid bench player on any championship caliber team, but nobodys going to make a long term commitment to a 34 yr old player.

He was a 1st pick bust for a while now he could deff be a great bench contributor for a team chasing that ring

He's been with 9 different teams in his 14 yrs in the NBA (that's ridiculous). And 3 of those 9 teams, he's had 2 different stints (T'wolves, Cavs and Sixers)

Ever since his dumb move of talking to T'wolves management under the table while still being a member of the Detroit Pistons, I think that's why a lot of organizations have lost trust in him. So that "34 yr old" argument doesn't hold, since he's been jumping around basically his ENTIRE career.

I'm telling you, his career isn't going anywhere right now. He is simply a ring chaser.

fans of all these championship caliber teams that want joe smith lol. and the fact that he still a free agent after like 2 months of free agency and everybody still guessing where the rest of the 2009 offseason NBA free agents will end up by the time the 09-10 NBA season starts, lol

Thread should be closed after this. It's like asking what is Mikkie More doing with his career?

but championship caliber teams are trying to add vets like Joe Smith to give them front-court depth, not being desperate like last yr Celtics like they signed Mikki Moore. Moore is basically a nobody and he had that 1 good yr in NJ when Kidd was the PG. can't compare the 2 players in that regard. Moore is a roster filler, while Smith is actually wanted by these title contenders.

ya, for like the last 5-6 yrs of his career. That was when he was in his like is 8 or 9 season. He just finished his 14th season! ridiculous I say. The second half of his career has been defined by being known as "a ring chaser". You become a ring chaser when you're on ur last legs. He's been doing it since his 8th season really, and its now starting to get really annoying

Whats Joe Smith weigh 130 pounds? Of course he isn't going to be able to guard Howard thats like Durant trying to D up Lebron. I really could care less he's a ring chaser isn't that the whole point of playing in the NBA to win a ring?

ya, and earning it as well. meaning going through the tough times, the ups and downs, actually ENJOYING THE JOURNEY with one team, play with them thru the yrs, so that he can be part of a team that puts themselves into championship caliber position

man you need to back of joe smith. dude has been stand up guy his whole career, besides apparently his under the table dealing which i didnt know about. but as far as i know, hes been standup, has always been a good mentor to younger guys, has always had skills teams wanted, and THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH WANTING A RING. who doesnt want a ring in the nba? i mean maybe he didnt stick with one team his whole career, but one thats not completely up to him, and two who cares, if he doesnt mind i sure dont. i dont know why you are hatin on joe smith lol, especially if you are a lakers fan, i mean you guys got championships without him, so whats he matter to you?

Why would anyone single him out as a ring chaser, everybody in the NBA had better be a ring chaser because all that's left is chasing the money and if you're in the NBA then your pretty much getting paid anyway.

I'd take him on the Blazers as a backup to Aldridge.

Careful with expressing thoughts like this. I started a thread called "Tired of Bandwagon Players" in which I lamented these guys riding coat tails like what you are talking about. I got ripped by all these guys on here for not understanding that everyone wants a ring and it doesn't matter how you get it.

Also, being a Lakers fan, do you really want to open this can of worms? In joining the Lakers for MLE money Ron Artest decided this year to become a ring chaser and he has only been around, what, 8 or 9 years? He hasn't gone through any of the Lakers' journey. I mean, unless you want to condemn him too...
