O'neal was probably the surname of the people who owned Shaqs ancestors. It was common to take the last name of your masters. So Shaqs ancestors owners, were probably Irish

Irish plantation owners?? Not likely. That was the time the Irish were discriminated against. There were Irish need not apply signs everywhere. Doubt any of them can afford slaves.

But they did have white skin. So they probably not discriminated against that much. And if you had the money back then, you had the power. They might have become rich in Ireland and brought their money to the states. I cant think of a better explanation as to why their would be so many black people with the name of O'neal. Maybe I will Google it

Googled it. I was right. It was why Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali. He said he wanted to abandon his "slave" name.

Well lets just pretend he is irish. More fun that way.;)

With that name he just might be the definition of "strapping Irishman"

But, I don't recall him having a problem with alcoholism, so probably not.
