The Celtics have announced the signing of big man Shelden Williams. The deal agreed upon is a one-year package worth $1.3 million. Williams, who was a standout at Duke University, never got his NBA career on track after being drafted fifth overall by the Atlanta Hawks. Williams fits the build of former Celtics forwards Leon Powe and Glen Davis. At 6-9, Williams is considered to be undersized when it comes to playing the four, but he makes up for his lack of size with hustle plays and terrific rebounding.

What does this mean for Big Baby?

To the naked eye, Williams is a more muscular version of Big Baby Davis, minus the ability to shoot a 18 foot jump shot. I find it hard to believe that the Celtics would feel comfortable having Williams backup Kevin Garnett, so personally, I donít see this interfering with the possibility of bringing back Davis to this team. With Williamsí lack of consistency throughout his NBA career, itís hard to believe that the Celtics front office would expect him to be a viable presence game in and game out. Still, the whole Big Baby situation should be resolved rather soon.

Still, this is a good depth signing and along with bringing Williams to this team it seems like we can 100% rule out any chance of Leon Powe re-signing here in Boston. Also, does a move like this mean that a guy like Brian Scalabrine could be traded? Perhaps in a deal for Maquise Daniels? Time will tell.

They should've just put that money towards keeping Big Baby. They will prolly re-sign him anyway, its just a matter of time. Williams is gonna be the 12th man and won't get a lot of playing time but hopefully he can learn from all those vets and try to be a player in the NBA who can contribute.

with the injuries they have faced, he will give good minutes. solid defender, and he is married to candace parker.

They need more athleticism at the 4.
They don't need more people who clog the lane. They need more athleticism and youth and from the 2-5.

i like him as the 5th big and a project. he could be a beast with the right teaching and help from kg. he might also just be used in a trade. either way i think it is a decent move. he has potential.
