View Full Version : Players with the Worst Contracts

arkanian215
08-03-2009, 10:04 AM
Honorable mention: Dan Gadzuric, Bucks (2 years, $14 million); Jermaine O'Neal, Heat (1 year $22.9 million), Etan Thomas, Thunder (1 year, $7.4 million), Sam Dalembert, Sixers (2 years, $23.6 million), Jason Maxiell, Pistons (4 years, $20 million).

15. Brian Cardinal, T-Wolves (1 year, $6.8 million): A source swears the league distributed a memo last year warning teams that signing players to a full-term midlevel exception usually turns out bad. It was titled The Cardinal Rule, I'm pretty sure.

14. Jerome James, Bulls (1 year, $6.6 million): Signing the massive center to a five-year deal in 2005 wasn't even Isiah Thomas' worst move as Knicks GM.

13. Michael Redd, Bucks (2 years, $35.3 million): Milwaukee realized too late this is too much for a one-dimensional player.

12. Corey Maggette, Warriors (4 years, $39.7 million): Golden State felt it had to do something last year after losing Baron Davis unexpectedly. Signing another shoot-first perimeter player wasn't it.

11. Bobby Simmons, Nets (1 year, $10.6 million): Hopefully, the former DePaul star will spend some of this money in his hometown.

10. Beno Udrih, Kings (4 years, $27.8 million): Might have been the league's worst starting player last season.

9. (tie) Mike Dunleavy (2 years, $20.2 million) and Troy Murphy (2 years, $23 million), Pacers: As they finish up huge contracts, this pair has combined to play 1,048 games without ever making the playoffs.

8. DeSagana Diop, Bobcats (4 years, $26.8 million): Dallas has a history of overpaying for mediocre big men, but the Mavs managed to unload this deal. Diop averaged 2.3 points and 3.6 rebounds last season.

7. Peja Stojakovic, Hornets (2 years, $29.5 million): This is a classic NBA mistake, bidding wildly for a free agent when there is no serious competition. Ben Gordon and the Pistons might be Exhibit B.

6. Andrei Kirilenko, Jazz (2 years, $33 million): Utah might not be so eager to unload Carlos Boozer if it hadn't rushed to give Kirilenko a ridiculous deal in 2004.

5. Tracy McGrady, Rockets (1 year, $23.3 million): He will be the league's highest-paid player this season. I still laugh at how ex-Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy congratulated McGrady on TV last spring for winning his first career playoff series. Of course, T-Mac was hurt and didn't play a second.

4. Marko Jaric, Grizzlies (2 years, $14.7 million): This guy averaged 2.6 points last season. And that was before he married supermodel Adriana Lima (http://str8hoops.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/adriana-lima.jpg).

3. Eddy Curry, Knicks (2 years, $21.7 million): Thanks to this contract, the former Bulls center may prevent New York's dream of chasing two major free agents in 2010.

2. Elton Brand, Sixers (4 years, $66 million): This seemed like a good idea at the time, but Brand has played in just 37 games the past two years because of injuries.

1. Gilbert Arenas, Wizards (5 years, $96.3 million): Washington forgot the Grant Hill Rule - never foist a massive contract on someone who can't walk. Arenas has played in 15 games the past two seasons.

By far the worst contract I have seen handed out in my lifetime.

#1 and #5.

I can speak on both being from DC, the wiz being my B team and being a rockets fan and they being my A team.

When the wiz signed Arenas to this ridiculous contract, I thought somebody has lost their mind. Arenas had a couple of good seasons, then started doing dumb stuff like jumping off a trampoline during the All star game while his coach gave him the WTF are u doing look? Couple of seasons later, the coach is gone and Arenas is in tmac territory.... overpaid, charismatic and a shadow of what they once were. The few games I saw of him last year showed a guy with zero explosion and lift. They will regret that contract.

As for Tmac, tlittle, twack, tquack, (insert own here).....I wake up every morning thanking God for another day and hoping that Tmac has gotten traded or retired. But to my dismay, he is still in a rocket's jersey, even changing his number, as if that will change anything. And he is talking again about dedicating himself and returning to elite status, bla bla bla bla........this punk pisses me off and the fact that some rocket fans are buying this **** is sad. If all he did was play 82 games, I would give him credit and absolve him off his playoff transgressions, but his lazy *** can't even do that.

well what about players that have LARge expiring contracts, should they be considered bad contracts because really that leaves a lot of cap space for teams when their contract runs out, specifically before the much anticipated period of 2010...like Jermaine ONeal and TMac both hav large expiring contracts that would free up cap space for the heat and houston to sign the present superstars of the league

ok i am no utah jazz fan but u cant hate AK-47, i mean the player is a great defender and was a great scorer, look up his stats, avg 2 blocks and 2 steals a game earlier in his career, it wasnt until the rising of Carlos Boozer and MIllsap that took minutes from his favourite position, PF, that he started to decline

Exactly. He played great in his contract year and we threw loadsa money at him, Boozer fit the system better and it was unfortunate that AK had to move to SF. Still, 16 mil for what is essentialy an above average role player. We could have like 3 players for that price, he's the reason we cant told Boozer he may be traded, he's the reason why we havnt been able to afford max MLE players the last 2 or 3 years. As long as we have him on 16/17mil we wont be successful. I'd quite gladly extend him in 2011, only if he take the 5/6mil he should be on. I dont hate on him, I hate on his contract.

Is he really making that much? Yikes! There some GM's out there that need to be banned from spending other peoples money. Lewis is not even good enough to carry Kobe's jock strap. At 6-9 all he does is shoot that streaky 3, and post up once in a while. Lacks speed to blow by his man and even worse, he doesn't even dunk, instead going for layups.

Ravens better don't stink. They are my only hope for the rest of the year. Not looking for much from the rockets or wiz, just misery and too much faith in two overpaid, annoying players. Arenas, I will cut some slack for, but Tmac is officially on my **** list.

I would have to agree with all those picks, in my opinion the two worst deals are tmac and arenas...just ridiculous amounts of money for players that dont even play, but on the bright side I think Arenas actually wants to play,Tmac I think just dosnt really want it anymore...

Dampier - 12.1
M. Blount - 7.9
K. Thomas - 8.8 (I don't know how he was left off the list)
Milicic - 7.5
Hughes - 13.6
B. Wallace - 10 (his salary is still on the books)
D. Miles - 9 (so is his)
S. Claxton - 5.2 (this guy is still getting paid, believe it or not)

Erick Dampier's contract isn't actually horrible anymore. Is he over-paid, INSANELY, but with the DUST chip, he has the most important contract that anyone in the league I believe to get an elite FA next year.

Yes I can blame them. Is it a coincidence that most players play the best in their contract year and then after they sign a big contract they never perform at that level again? I think not.

big expiring contracts are assets in the salary cap era. There are probably teams out there licking there chops to have tmac expire on there watch.

and it doesn't get worse than Marco Jaric or Eddy Curry cause they aren't even D-League ready. (honorable mentions: Jason Kapono and Marcus "the brick" Banks. They combined for nearly 11 mill dollars last yr)
