“Nine or 10 teams think they can win the championship next year, and you can see by the moves,’’ Rivers said. “Because of the economy, 20 or 21 feel they can’t. A group of nine looked at the Finals last year and said, ‘We can do this,’ and they are going for it.’’

Shut up Doc you couldn't be more wrong and you couldn't even list 8 of those "9 or 10" teams.

Complete B.S. Everyone knows that next year the balance between contenders and non-contenders is historically wide apart. Lakers, Spurs, Celtics, Magic, Cavs (even I think I may be giving them too much credit as contenders).

This thread title is incorrect. Doc said "9 or 10 teams think they can win the title this year". He didn't say that HE thinks they can.

Denver doesn't belong right now. They need an allstar big man to join that group that can win the title.

Obviously most people didn't read the quote. There were a bunch of teams that appear to be "going for it" based on the moves made this offseason. That is all he said. Not sure how someones response could be "WRONG!".

eh, I beg to differ. Denver this past playoffs might have won it all if not for a couple bad breaks/calls that went the Lakers' way during their series. Another year of maturity for Melo, another year for everyone to meld more with Billups. The second half of last season, they were arguably the best in the NBA. They are certainly contenders.

It's Cavs, Magic, Celtics in the East, and Lakers, Spurs, maybe Blazers in the West.

Barring injury or wild trade, no one else stands a chance.

2. Magic
3. Celtics
4. Lakers
5. Spurs
6. Mavs
7. Blazers
8. Nuggets

Hornets, Wiz etc. have plenty of firepower.
At least 8 teams can/could. 9-10 is not that far off.

Who knows? People forget about how good the Hornets were the year before last as well. They just upgraded on Chandler. They could as well

3-Celtics filled wit old guys! Not bad way
4-Cavs addition of shaq CAN be huge
5-Nuggets billups an melo? Come on

Are u high? I am a lakers fan but you saying Denver doesnt belong right now makes me laugh. As far as i know is that they should of beat LA this year. They have earned my respect for them and know they can easily win a championship. Yes big man can play a part in having advantages in games. Denver is above Cavs and Celts in contenders next year.

I think you are all kind of pushing the Nuggets out when we are right there with you guys. We aren't a team with big names like (Artest, Kobe, Gasol, Bynum) (Sheed, Allen, KG, Pierce) (Howard, VC, Nelson, Lewis) but we our a team that can win ANY game if we want. Our team is uber-talented but we are a streaky team, if we get up we stay up, if we get down we can come back. But really this all depends on if we can stay healthy, if lightning strikes twice and K-Mart/Nene stay healthy we are right there with you guys.

I get what Doc is saying with this though. Several teams are evidently throwing in the towel while the teams at the top just keep getting better. I think next years playoffs are going to be a joy.

Disagree

Every team in the western conference has improved drastically

Lakers - Artest
Spurs - Jefferson and Mcdyess
Mavs - Marion and Gooden
Portland - Miller

You guys havn't done anything to improve. True you were a good team last year, but last year is last year and the 2009-2010 western conference is a whole other story.

Doc is right. There about that many teams that have been very active in the offseason, trying to add players to get the title. They think they can win.

Now whether or not Doc thinks that there are really 9 teams with a legitimate shot is another story entirely. Like most coaches, he is not going to allow his team to get complacent.

This has been one of the best off seasons in a long time in the NBA. A whole lot of transactions in the upper echelon teams, and the 2010 waiting game for others. I am already anticipating a great season ahead.

Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Cavs, Magic. Dallas, Denver, etc don't belong in there. Only 5 teams will contend for the Finals and there are only 2 TRUE elite teams being the Celtics and Lakers. Celtics window will close after this year though IMO

_KB24_
08-02-2009, 06:59 PM
Lakers, Spurs, Celts are IMO the "real contenders".

I have the Magic and Cavs closely behind because I don't feel that they can beat the above teams in a series.

The Mavs and Nuggets are a couple of steps behind and I really dont think that anyone sees them as a dangerous opponent worth worrying about.

Nuff said...that's the list right there. The only way any time wins it other than these 5 is due to a big trade or a rash of injuries to all of these top 5.
