View Full Version : NEW! NBA 2K10 Draft Combine!?!

I'm excited for 2k10 and this sounds alright

The downloadable game for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network is scheduled to release in early September and will allow players to sculpt their player with 2K Sports' new super-deep player creation mechanic, define their play style and then participate in six full-length games and six of a possible eight drills in the hopes of making it into the coveted first round of the NBA Draft.

The creation mechanic that's being used in Draft Combine is unlike anything we've seen from the 2K series of basketball games. Not only will you get to sculpt your head, hair, face and arch on your nose with the use of presets and sliders with the analog sticks, but play styles, shot types and dribbling moves are at your fingertips as well.
Each position has six or seven play types. If you're a point guard you can be a defensive player, look to pass first, all-around player, three-point specialist, or an athlete. The other backcourt positions are similar with power forward and center allowing you play best with your back to the basket, face-up, or rebounding, among other choices that mirror different positions on the court.

The play styles are certainly traditional for games of this type, but where Draft Combine really differentiates itself from other b-ball titles is in the shot and dribbling styles. You can pretty much customize any shot you'll take on the court. You can design your fader, leaner, drift left or right, free throw and other shots using a list of presets. The same goes for a lengthy assortment of dribbling moves such as spins, half-spins, crossovers and hesitation moves.

You can also detail your shoes (among the licensed brands are Nike, Jordan and Adidas) with new colors for every bit of surface area in sight and add tattoos to pretty much every body part imaginable (almost). There are also pressure shorts, sleeves and finger straps to add to the authenticity.

The only thing that's really missing is an option for your player's temperament on the court. I'd like to be able to make my guy cocky or humble. I'd like to see him have some sort of positive interaction (not starting fights) with the fans or yell at the ref when they don't' agree with a call.

After you're done sculpting your player it's time to take to the court. As I said previously, there are six games and six drills that you'll need to complete before entering the draft. Each game has a set of three objectives. There's one for offense, one for defense and one that calls for strong teamwork. You'll also have instant feedback on the court thanks to a A-F letter grade that sits in the upper-left corner. Take a bad shot and it'll let you know about it and your grade will suffer. You'll also be getting feedback from the NBA 2K Insider who will give you a breakdown of your play, both good and bad after the game is done.
At the end of every game and drill you're given a set of skill points based on the quality of your play. You can then hop into an attributes screen and build your player as you see fit. The cost of each attribute bump is determined by your play style. If you're a big who plays best with his back to the basket then it'll cost you a bit more to up your three-point shooting ability than it would for a point guard. Height also plays into the skill point mechanic. The taller you are the harder it will be to build up your player because of your height advantage on the court. Throughout your progression you'll be able to check two leaderboards that track your overall rating and total skill points earned and compare them against other players.

Driving all of the on-court action forward is a new camera angle that's designed for the My Career mode in NBA 2K10 and Draft Combine. It's focused on you at all times and isn't all that dissimilar from camera angles that we've seen from other sports games' individual modes. I didn't get a chance to get my hands on the game for myself, so the performance of the camera angle is still up in the air. My worry is that it will focus too heavily on the player and you'll miss things happening elsewhere on the court like players cutting the basket or fast ball movement while playing defense.

Once you've completed all six games and the six drills it's time for the NBA Draft. You're guaranteed to be drafted at some point in the two rounds, but your overall quality as a player determines when exactly you'll be drafted. Once you're picked up by a team your player will be uploaded to the 2K servers to be used in the full retail release of NBA 2K10. While you can have more than one created player in Draft Combine, only one can be uploaded to the 2K server.

NBA 2K10: Draft Combine is scheduled to launch in early September on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

Sounds alright, check out the pictures too. Looks like creating a player improved! No more aliens!

Only thing I want from 2k10 is to give the birdman his proper hair! That would satisfy me!

im constantly disappointed by these games and their inability to rate players. devin harris is not a 90. rajon rondo is not a 90. id rather see them get that right first rather than seeing some new gimmicks.

That's why it is optional to buy before the game comes out :) It's far more extensive then a demo, it's worth all of the $5... I will get it for sure.

$5 isn't too bad, but still... this should be a free add-on.

hey man i did it a few years ago, why? i had no choice all my friends played 2k and they all laughed at me for sticking with live. Live has come to an end that era is over.....they had a great run in my eyes.

I always felt that when I played 2k the gameplay was really slow and that it was just about impossible to make a bucket- so I have stuck to Live the last couple of years and dealt with the features, or lack thereof. Any thoughts? Has 2k improved?

It took me a while to switch over but I'm glad I did. I think Live looks more realistic but the game play is way better with 2k. If the game play seems to slow it gives you the option to speed it up if you want. With that said I'm going to have to give them both a try like I do every year before making my decision. Live is supposed to be pretty rad this year too.

By they way, it looks like this year you can actually create a white guy to look like a real white person and not some alien or terrorist.

Haha. You ever notice how randomnly the rookies generated by the game in the draft have a GIANT forehead sticking out?

Same problem with Amundson on the Suns.

Hopefully they fix that.

I would like them to improve the post game though, but I'll still stick with 2k regardless as the better overall game.

i think they get them pretty good... guys like rondo and harris have abilities that get them big scores... like rondo for his height has huge ups and hes one of the quickest pgs in the league... so that right there is 2 attributes in the 90s...then u include ballhandling and passing theres 2 more very good attribute ratings... i guess what im sayin is that just because rondo cant shoot doesnt mean hes going to be rated low in a video game...
