http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-clipstrade072009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

The Los Angeles Clippers have reached an agreement in principle to trade guard Quentin Richardson(notes) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Sebastian Telfair(notes), Mark Madsen(notes) and Craig Smith(notes), leagues sources said Monday.

The trade is expected to be finalized later Monday. The Clippers had previously been in negotiations with free agent guards Ramon Sessions(notes) and Allen Iverson(notes).

Nice....getting Q-Rich didn't make sense for the Clips, even though they got rid of Randolph, but now they are adding another young piece in Telfair

not a bad trade at all for the clippers. Smith and telfair are good players

This trade prolly also indicates that AI will not be signing with the Clippers. I think Clips are good at the guard position with B. Davis, Eric Gordon, and now Telfair

Not that its the biggest trade in the world, but in case people wanted to know...I'm sure the details will leak out soon. Madsen just posted it about a minute ago on twitter:
http://twitter.com/madsen_mark
I grew up very close to him and was college roommates with two of his best friends--I'm not part of his dancing fan club though :D

Update: lol..here are the rest of the players he listed as being involved: Craig Smith & Sebastian Telfair. Good thing I put the fillers name as the thread title It's for Q Richardson

Trading Telfair means Rubio is coming over. This is a perfect move. We need a PURE shooter. We get an expiring contract and move bums. The only piece was Craig Smith and he is so inconsistant it isn't even funny. Good luck Telfair on being a backup your whole career. And you gotta like freeing up $ for 2010.

Smith is a decent player, but thats only going to take from Griffins minutes.

Telfair is garbage and always will be, him and baron will never be able to co-exist on the floor together.

Dunleavy just added another head case to his roster, it amazes me how that moron is still a coach.

Smith isnt going to take BG's minutes, hes going to give the Clips a valuable insurance piece and more depth. They dont have any true PF's after Blake. Kaman and Camby cant coexist the way they can next to true PF's, but you cant play both of them heavy minutes with BG, so problem solved.

The other day I called Telfair incompetent, but Im happy to have him over Taylor so its an upgrade PERIOD.

Whos the headcase?

Smith won't be getting any minutes behind Love and Jefferson, and Telfair was just in the way, and will never be a starting PG in the NBA. This clears more money for Minnesota next year, and they only had a single SG who never played an NBA game. Good trade for both teams.

Hawkeye15

I was thinking that too. Hey Ricky, look we just traded away Telfair. That is a strong sign that Rubio may very well be in a Wolves jersey come November. Plus, that is another $9 million coming off the books next summer. The Wolves, while obviously not a player for any of the monster names, are now in position to add some peices in two ways if possible.
1) Free agency. Not likely, probably just a mid level.
2) use the space in trades. They can take a long term deal with high money from someone who is overloaded with deals, and has no choice but to trade a very good player due to financial reasons.

Kahn is looking smarter and smarter

To those who think Smith and Telfair are good players, here is a Wolves fan evaluation

Smith: Excels in certain matchups. He is 6'6", and strong as an ox. Not a good rebounder for his size. Black hole. Very active. Good against teams who refuse to be physical, but not capable against any team with size

Telfair: very fast. shot has improved. Makes only the easy pass. At this point, he is still young, but has had the keys in his hands a while, and just doesn't seem to be able to grasp how to run a team. WIldly inconsistent. Will be a good backup, at best.

as for Q Rich, he simply helps our nonexistant SG situation, since Ellington is it, for a season, then his $9+ million come off the books. Bye bye

He may the set the record for most times traded in an offseason by the end of summer.

Hawkeye do you not agree that the most missed person will be Mad Dog?

for sure. He is a great locker room player. Telfair and Smith are both young players with limitations. Neither will be more than a good backup. Really, the Wolves did nothing but get rid of Telfair's player option, which he will be sure to exercise. I sense this has to do more with showing Rubio's crew that they have cleared out space for him to have the keys. And we were sooooooo thin at SG, might as well take a guy who has proven he can at least play, and get that $9.4 million expiring

Hawkeye15
07-20-2009, 05:37 PM
I don't mean to bash on Telfair and SMith. It makes sense for the Clips too. Smith and Madsen come off the books. Telfair can at least backup Baron, or run as a starter for very small periods of time. Smith is a decent matchup advantage player against teams that are not physical. Madsen can help BG. This was basically, a grass in greener for both teams.

Telfair improved when the season was lost, and he had the non pressure freedom to run the team. That is exactly how Beno got a big deal from Sac. How is that working out.
Smith is a player who you play 30 mpg one night, against teams that shy from contact, then you sit him for 3 games cause tough teams roll thru.
Not dogging either, but the best player in the deal was Richardson. But, none of that is why the trade went down. This sends a signal to Rubio that the Wolves have cleared out space at PG for him, and gives Love 35 mpg, like he should be getting, while having big money off the books next summer. It gives LA a backup PF for Blake, and a backup for Baron, at a low cost.

Wow does this send a message to Rubio. We promise him the starting job and now get rid of our backup PG. Joventut, in the mean time, sign a PG to their roster. Considering the financial trouble (rumored) Joventut is in, I think they'd rather get 2-3M for a buyout from Rubio than have 2 years of his services.

This is looking really good for the Timberwolves.

Now, having 25M coming off the books in 2010 we're set up to trade for a big ticket player (in the 12-15M per range) from a team looking to clear space for Wade, Kobe, Lebron, or Bosh.

Did I mention we have 2-3 first rounders next year?!?! I love what Kahn is doing, even if it is hard on some fans.
