I was wondering this the other day. I know there are quite a few guys that absolutely fly. But is there one that just stands out above the rest? I head John Kruk saying that Carlos Gomez was the fastest. Who do you think it is?

I have heard that Reyes said that Gomez routinely beat him in footraces.

I know Gomez has the fastest home run trots.

bringinwood
07-18-2009, 03:57 PM
Andrew McCutchen is pretty quick but just because he is a quick player that was just called up doesn't make him the fastest in baseball hahaha...

Michael Bourn gets no love because he never gets on base... If he wasn't so damn fast he wouldn't even see the bench...

Wily Tavares is crazy quick... He could snag 100 bags if he got on base more...

Crawford the same thing...

Ellsbury is fast but not the fastest... His speed is magnified by him playing on the east coast... Much the same as when he was a prospect... Most people thought he was the next coming of Christ... I remember people thinking he was going to hit .400 and be the first 50/50 guy with 200 rbi...

Reyes is much the same as Ellsbury... Overhyped...

Victorino is fast but not the fastest... He would steal more if not in that insane lineup...

Gomez is probably the only guy in Crawford's category...

I think the fastest is probably Crawford and for awhile now... He is also up there as best athlete in baseball... He is a freak of nature...

Ellsbury is not overhyped. He put up similar numbers as Crawford and was well behind in All Star votes. Nobody said he would hit .400 hit 50 HR and 200 RBI. Everyone said he would be a .300 10Hr 50 RBI 50 SB type guy.

He never had power so I don't know where ur saying someone said he was going to hit 50 HR. I guess ur a ****in idiot. When he fills out he'll be lucky to hit 20 HR.

Yeah I hate when guys are hitting .297 with 40 SB at the All Star Break.

I don't understand why alot of people haven't be saying ellsbury I understand gomez but really if you have watched ellsbury run the bases and steal you would see that he is pretty fast.

Because he isn't the fastest player in baseball...

Gomez is faster as is Crawford as are a number of player mentioned before... His speed is overrated due to him coming up through the Red Sox organization... Much the same with Reyes coming through the Met's org... It's a bias that is generated to make trades more one sided in favor of the east coast teams... They manipulate the media in ingenius fashion... The Yankees did well in this regard for a number of years... But, the rest of baseball has caught on and it doesn't work as well anymore...

Gomez and Crawford have been the fastest for awhile now...

On a side note, Crawford is widely regarded as the best pure athlete in baseball...

If you want to see how fast a player truely is, see which players make it from first to third and how much distance they need to make it, which arms they test in the outfield, and who they don't run against...

I've seen Victorino go first to third on a line drive to left field without it being a hit and run... That's some serious speed...

SJ5382

It was Reyes back in 2003 when he first came up, but he has definitely lost some speed.

There's really no way of knowing who the fastest is, but Crawford-Ellsbury-Gomez are up there. Seems to me that Gomez is kind of slow out of the box, it takes him a while to get going because of his unorthodox running style. But when he rounds second on a triple...damn.

Not saying gomez isnt faster, but Im pretty sure range isnt all about spped. Its also about taking better routes to balls. I may be wrong, but i thought Ive read that somewhere.

A. McCutchen, for the Pirates is a burner too, if you guys can wait a little while patiently, chances are he'll be on one of your teams before long.... At the rate they have been unloading "future franchise" players this year, to start rebuilding, 17 sub .500 season 16 rebuilds...........I hear anymore of this verbal diarehha from the suits in the Pirates system, I'm gonna have tryouts and us normal guys will form a team, and I'm betting we could give them a run (COME-ON MARK CUBAN, SAVE YOUR HOMETOWN PIRATES, CHRIST 122 YEAR OLD TEAM YOU'D THING SOMEONE COULD PULL THEIR HEAD OUTTA SOMEONE ELSE'S ***)

On the bright side, it's pretty gal-darn cheap to go see a game in the nicest stadium (said by many) in MLB. Dumbasses, you don't build a new stadium an dthen hope your team will come around and win....That's like giving your dog a treat, and then trying to get him to do a trick....

apparently Clay Buchholz has beaten Ellsbury in a foot race.... there are a bunch of articles on this, so i don't believe that Ellsbury is the fastest... anyways, this article is worth checking out..

http://slanchreport.com/2008/03/14/its-good-to-be-a-phenom/

here is a quote from that article:
My favorite thing about Buchholz, besides the star pitcher potential and hot girlfriend, is that he is apparently super-fast. He was a star sprinter in high school and apparently has raced and beaten fellow star prospect and super-fast Jacoby Ellsbury in a foot race. Although don’t expect to ever see a rerunning of that race, according to Buchholz “I’ve already been told that I’ll be fined if I race against Ellsbury.”

What a jones it must be for the other, apparently unrelated Buchholz in the majors, Taylor, of the Rockies. I mean, how is he supposed to stack up compared to this?

If Gomez is so fast why does he only have like 8 SB?

Remember when Luis Castillo used to be the fastest guy in the league? Like back in the late 90's he used to steal like 60 bases a season.

And the only answer is...............we still don't know.
How will we know unless EVERY player in the game gets into a foot race or is timed..

Brett Gardner with Jose Reyes in a close second, rounding out the top three would be Crawford.

Just because you've only stolen eight bases doesn't mean you're not fast. If you've seen him play, you should know he is crazy fast. Look at Carlos Beltran, he has the highest stolen base percentage EVER/steals tons of bases every year and I'm pretty sure everyone would agree he is not the fastest.

Anyway my top 5 in no particular order would be:

Reyes
Gomez
Crawford
Ichiro
Ellsbury/Upton

Of course, like shoelessjoe said...we'll never know who the fastest guy is. It could be some no-name riding the bench

Agreed!...but then again, I see Bonifacio all the time since I'm in Miami...However, Ellsbury can flat out fly as well.

As far as all-time fastest, I've read in more than one book that "Cool Papa" Bell was the fastest, but he played in the Negro Leagues and never had a chance to show his speed in the Major Leagues. It was said that he could ROUTINELY bunt for doubles, if the ball was bunted just right!......and of course, the old saying said, "Cool Papa was so fast, he could turn the light switch off and be in bed before the room got dark!"

I'm pretty sure Clay Buchholz beat Ellsbury in a foot race.
