The Utah Jazz and center Mehmet Okur have agreed in principle to a two-year contract extension worth just under $21 million, according to NBA front-office sources.

Okur could have been a free agent this summer but elected on June 30 to complete the final season on his current contract with the Jazz at $9 million.

Sources told ESPN.com that Okur and the Jazz have quickly reached terms to extend the contract by two more seasons at $20.8 million starting in 2010-11.

With Andrei Kirilenko still on the books for two more seasons, Utah still faces difficult decisions on restricted free agent Paul Millsap and Team USA forward Carlos Boozer as it tries to solidify its long-term support cast around face of the franchise Deron Williams.

After Boozer, like Okur, elected to play out the 2009-10 season with the Jazz at $12.7 million instead of becoming a free agent July 1, it's widely believed that Utah's preference is trading Boozer to create the financial flexibility needed to re-sign Millsap.

Okur, 30, averaged 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds in 2008-09, his fifth season in Utah after leaving the Detroit Pistons to sign with the Jazz as a free agent in 2004.

good news. Not sure why we've given him a pay increase. For what he was paid he was good value, the only bad thing was that we relied on him too heavily for offense with Boozer injured and Deron off the pace the majority of the season. He wants to be here, so I'm glad he stays. Now on to extending Brewer's contract and re-signing Millsap.

there are a lot of teams that are paying a lot of money for good but not great playersthey it is ok for teams like boston, lakers, magic and spurs but not other teams like dallas, utah, bulls and the heat..for example wade should realize that riley wants to hit a home run, that means to sign bosh, james, stoudamire and have that opportunity and if that doen't work then go to plan b whatever it is.you can't sign someone like jefferson or carter this year and loose your cap space (if your not already one of the top 5 teams in the league)and chance to sign one of the above mentioned players.on the other hand in exchange for wade's verbal commitment riley should guarantee to make certain moves and even go over the cap if wade in 2010 thinks adding a certain player would help win the ship.let's have a mediation just like they do in the courts.i also feel that wade likes the idea of signing next year and getting paid the major dollars when he is 34.(if he signs now he would only get paid until he is 33)..i agree with riley go for the home run first.,even if it means waisting a year of d.wade's playing days. is all about winning it all and not being the 4th best team in the east.

meh, Memo is a good guy. Its not everyday someone says to you that he wants to retire with you and wants to earn the right to have his jersey retired with you...especialy when your the Utah Jazz. He wants to stay, and for that I want him to stay, and being paid 1 mil extra a year is his reward for that I think. He's an 18 and 8 center and shoots the 3 with a top percentage. All we need is a big defensive big man behind him and we're all set. Plus its only 2 years. He'll be 33, and will then hopefully re-sign for much cheaper.

and I thought the Bargs deal was pretty good, although he only got you 15 and 5, he's young and nowhere near his prime yet, he's grow into his deal.

Yeah but even if you are the one paying you should know the extra 4 or five million a year (2-2.5 million is how far apart odom and the lakers are times 2 for the luxury tax) is well worth it to get all the millions more that comes from getting another championship instead of 2nd or 3rd round exit

Not bad for a decent C that plays no D but has a good O, $1-2M overpaid IMO...

That surprises me... I thought we were looking forward to clearing cap space next year and getting a defensive center. Interesting since we have NY's potential lottery pic and a need at an all-around SG. I'm still confused with our 1st rnd pick being a PG. Price is good but I guess JS doesn't like him

7 mil is reasonable. 10 is a little pricey
