at 25, this is a young center with a decent game which definitely exceeds that of Erick Dampier. Smooth move.

This is good news for Gortat and the Mavs, but I also think it will force the Rockets to look into a possible trade for dalembert... maybe the sixers can get rid of him finally!

I guess it makes sense for Dallas, but why does everyone have a raging bone for this guy? I must be missing something.

I must be missing something.you're right that no one needs to be getting a raging bone for Gortat, but he has a nice highlight reel on youtube that shows a lil of what he could do when given the PT. He's got a decent game and only 25 yrs old and going to improve some more with PT, plus easily better than Dampier lol:clap:

Damn...I really liked Gortat. He will help the Mavs out, he is better then Dampier.

Gives them another big man to guard the West's top bigs as well.

Yeah but Gortat has a lot more skill than Diop does. Diop is a pretty good defender and rebounder, but other than that, he has no skill whatsoever....he's just a big body.

idk if hes worth the mle but still a good pickup

Young2Kinsler
07-02-2009, 10:07 PM
He's definately not worth the MLE, and I guess Dallas thinks just adding Gortat is going to make us better contenders. I guess we still have Stacks contract to deal, but this move pretty much ends our offseason, with little improvement and still no SG

WOW what a pickup!!!! Definitely makes the Mavs a legit CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDER!!!!!!! Freakin MARK CUBAN is this the BEST you can do???????????
I pity the city of Dallas and the Mavericks fans......

I think the magic have the option to match any offer to gortat with there early bird rights or something like that. though it will put the magic way over the cap. will have to go find where i read that. May end up becoming a sign and trade.

from a news report in the majgic forum

But because Gortat, a two-year NBA player, is a restricted free agent, the Magic have the right to match any contract offer he receives. With heavy interest from Houston, Dallas, Indiana and New York, Gortat is trying to secure a deal for the NBA's mid-level exception (worth approximately $5.5 million next season). A five-year deal could be worth approximately $35 million.

Diop isn't in the same league as Gortat. I still don't understand for the life of me why the Mavs gave him that deal, and more so, why the Bobcats took it on. He's the current 'Jerome James'

If it is impossible for the Magic to retain Gortat, I am happy he is going to the Mavs!

thedfactor
07-02-2009, 10:43 PM
Ok adding Gortat is a start. He's no big name like Shaq or Kaman or Chandler. But Gortat is a suitable starting center who has a solid balance of offense and defense. He gives the Mavs their best quality starting center in a long time. Now Dallas needs to add another legit scorer and the team will be looking half decent. Maybe add Marquis for cheap too.

sportscrazy34

Orlando will have seven days to match any offer sheet Gortat signs next Wednesday, which is the first day free agents are allowed to sign new contracts. The Magic have stressed their intent to match offers for the 6-foot-11 native of Poland but doing so would almost certainly send them well into luxury-tax territory.

from espn here (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4303432)
so he is not a mav yet.

Spurred1
07-03-2009, 12:55 AM
The Magic probably won't try too hard to match that offer because of the luxury tax, but who knows..
Gortat isn't a huge deal, no, but he is better than Dampier-for starters, he is capable of catching the ball and holding on to it. If Mavs sign him, he had better start. Is he worth the full MLE? Maybe not, but big men are in high demand, so apparently one must overpay.
And yes, Diop was nothing short of a horrific signing.

Gortat will Start over that embarrassment of a center they have there already. Mavs needed a guy like this bad.

I thought Gortat would sign with Houston. I don't blame him for taking the chance of getting starter minutes. He's entering his prime years and had a great season, playoffs and finals. He can definitely be a soild starter for the Mavs ...

I hope, we can sign McDyess now, as backup for D12.

thank you mavericks he was linked to sign with the thunder and thats all we needed was a no name center that did good only in the playoffs before that i havent heard of him all year.

This doesn't mean the Magic won't match. Remember, he's a restricted FA, the Magic have the right to match any offer.

With that said, I don't think they will. I don't think he's worth the full MLE, and I especially don't think the Magic intend on using that money on him.

Durant is hype

i think the mavs mite try and make a trade now using the expirings of that other big useless centre they had and stack's contract.....damp is on like 10mil and stack is on like 7mill but only 2mil is garunteed of something....at least i think damp is an expiring
