i dont know how much this factors in but from as aesthetic point of view (i am a television-radio and sport media double major) the off set creates balance on the screen and fills screen space a little more efficiently

Think of how high the camera has to be placed to get the angle that will produce that view. Sure that works in Fenway, but in a lot of other stadiums its just not feasible. Certainly would prefer to watch more games that way though.
