View Full Version : Yao's career possibly over?

I just read this, I am not sure if it is news to all of you but it is to me:

As the NBA draft approached, the grim truth about Yao Ming’s(notes) broken left foot hung like an anvil over the Houston Rockets. The fear isn’t that he’s just lost for next season, but longer.

The Rockets and Yao’s reps are frightened over his future, and the concern is the most base of all: Does Yao Ming ever play again?

“The realization has hit them that this is grave,” one NBA general manager said.

For now, the Rockets have privately told league peers it could be a full season before Yao might be able to return to basketball. Multiple league executives, officials close to Yao and two doctors with knowledge of the diagnoses are describing a troubling, re-fracture of his navicular bone. Three pins were inserted a year ago, but the foot cracked in the playoffs and isn’t healing.

“It sounds like he’s missing most of next season, if not the entire 82 games,” one league executive who has had recent discussions with the Houston front office told Yahoo! Sports. “That’s all that [the Rockets] will concede quietly, but they know it’s probably much worse.”

thats it. its over. people are getting off the rockets bandwagon. r.i.p. yao ming's foot and career. good thing...that creates a place for us in the western conference playoffs. we will miss the 7-6 man. wait does that mean Hasheem Thabeet will officially be the tallest person in NBA?

I think no matter what, his career in Houston could be over. They are probably going to be forced to start over and if he is somehow healthy a year from now then I see him getting traded on draft day or something so that they can continue to rebuild.

That's the thing, he isn't that old. He is only 28 right now. I like to think he can still come back the question will be, will he still be Yao? Will his numbers go down?

IMO he will be back, but will miss next season, which sucks For houston and the NBA

it all makes sense now. that is why the rockets have been willing to let go of role players to get ricky rubio.i guess they are trying to rebuild.

Wow, this is big! I was becoming more and more impressed with Yao. Sucks this had to happen to him. I was looking forward to seeing him start to get the same recognition that so many others get, but don't deserve.

What is it with durability and big men?

Rockets can and still will still make payoffs without him. They've done it and competed hard for the last two years without him. Sorry you feel the way about an injury.

Big men and their legs, especially feet. If a young seven footer starts to have foot problems, run. Oden looks like the next one to bemoan this fate. To bad for Yao, he is a good guy. Just too much basketball all the time for him, the body couldn't handle it. Still might not be over for him, though.

I wish Yao the best. He should take the next two years off and focus on getting healthy and then reevaluate playing after that. He may never be able to take the grind of playing 35-40 minutes a night for 82 games, but could be used strategicly in short spurts and in playoff games. NBA comes second to being able to get around for the rest of his life. Big Z in Clevland faced simaler problems hopefuly Yao will be able to get healthy and come back

Horrible news for Yao and seemingly devastating news for the Rockets.

I don't think the Rockets are going to get Artest back after news like this. It definitely decreases the chances.

Also, I kinda thought that Tmac would be more motivated to come back strong after what the Rockets accomplished without him, but I don't see him with that kind of motivation if they lose Yao.

Daze9900

might be a blessing in disguise. That equals automatic failure/tank mode for next season. Perhaps they keep Yao and the ping pongs work in their favor....

Sad news for the rockets, Yao is such a classy guy i feel bad for him. Big men have so much stress their bodies, too much weight carried on their lower body making injuries too frequent. I really hope Yao can recover. As for the rockets, i think they are done and are rebuilding. No way they will resign artest since they can no longer contend. McGrady, is not someone to try to build around especially at this stage of his career and arguably at anytime of his career. IMO Houston is lottery bound.

GspLAL
06-29-2009, 06:12 PM
Hate to say it but I think this might be it, he's just way too big to be able to have a long career. If he was just a role player I don't think he would have this many problems because there wouldnt be as much demand from him but he's their #1 scoring option so he has to put a lot of strain on his body. I could be wrong but that's how I see it.

wow it would be a shame to see the most talented center in the league go down. its been a pleasure watching yao though and he shouldn't feel too bad, he was a pioneer and a whole nation watched and loved his every move.

i hope he gets better but i think he should retire before his injuries become threatening to the point where he'd be wheelchair ridden for the rest of his life.

I'm still perplexed that Yahoo broke this huge story in the sports world 4 hours before ESPN did. 4 HOURS. Yahoo! But I guess at this point I'm only preaching to the choir on mentioning how much ESPN sucks.

that's looking on the bright side things. maybe the Rockets could do what the Spurs did when Robinson was out that one season....draft another great player and have the player partner up with Yao and lead the Rockets to a championship together :) maybe that player could be another big men? I heard the next draft is filled with talented big men.

Okay, the worst ending is Yao can't play any more, career ends. Yao's finacial is secured, he can have his normal life...But, the Rocket still have to pay Yao 12M next season, and that's not the end of story...Yao has a player's option for 17M the season after! That's a bomb!
You guys think he will trigger the player's option of 17M???

First and foremost let me say this, I am Chinese, all my family is Chinese.

With that said, F China. Wtf did you think was going to happen when you ride a 7"6 guy that hard? They wanted him to be a NBA star and play all summer (not just for the Olympics but the Asian Games, practicing with the National Team etc). The horrible thing is if he had refused, which he never would've because of his kind and loyal demeanor, China would've branded him a traitor to the country as they did with Wang ZhiZhi (Wang requested not to play for China during a offseason to rest and prepare for the following NBA season and China kicked him out of the country for a good 4 years until he offered a national apology).

Congrats China, you ruined the sole Chinese basketball star (Yi isn't anything and Sun can't even get PT). Given that there are no Chinese prospects now, its probably going to be at least a few decades until another Chinese player will be successful. Fantastic.

Just too bad. I feel for him. Hes the biggest basketball star from Asia. Idk but the biological make-up of the Chinese people are really not meant for basketball. I mean not necessarily but I read somewhere that they are known for having "flexible" bodies thats why they do very well in gymnastics etc. Maybe Yao's skeletal make-up being really cannot support his height and weight. Will try to post that article. Not being a racist here. Hope he comes back. Sucks for Houston and the NBA.
