all info taken from bluejays.com

Monday June 29, 7:07, TSN

Jeff Niemann, RHP (6-4, 4.23) vs Roy "Doc" Halladay, RHP (10-1, 2.53)

Scouting report:

Rays: Niemann was pushed back two days to get Scott Kazmir back into the Rays' rotation. Niemann struggled with his control June 21 against the Mets when he walked four and left the game with the Rays trailing 2-0. The Rays came back to take a 4-2 lead to get Niemann off the hook. Niemann uses his 6-foot-9 height to create a downward angle on his pitches that can be extremely difficult for hitters to hit. When Niemann is throwing his breaking pitches for strikes, he usually finds success. Niemann has not faced the Blue Jays.

Blue Jays: Halladay makes his first start since June 12 on Monday, after missing just over two weeks with a right groin strain. He left his last start two pitches into the fourth inning of the Jays' 7-5 loss to Florida at Rogers Centre, giving up one run en route to a no-decision. It was the only one of Halladay's 13 starts this season in which the right-hander did not pitch at least seven innings. Over his last 10 games, Halladay has gone 7-0 with a 2.07 ERA, 62 strikeouts and nine walks.

Tuesday June 30, 7:07, TSN

Matt Garza, RHP (5-5, 3.61) vs Scott Richmond, RHP (6-4, 3.68)

Scouting report:

Rays: Garza got back on track against the Phillies Wednesday after suffering three losses in his last three decisions. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed one run on three hits while walking four and striking out seven in eight innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Garza has the best stuff on the staff and seems to be maturing on the mound, where he has experienced problems controlling his emotions in the past. Garza is 3-3 with a 1.99 ERA in six career starts against the Blue Jays; he is 1-2 with a 0.79 ERA in three career starts at Rogers Centre.

Blue Jays: Richmond followed up a strong eight-inning, one-run performance in Philadelphia with another effective outing, earning a win in the Jays' 7-2 victory over the Reds on Wednesday at Rogers Centre. He gave up two runs -- one on a solo homer -- in seven innings, allowing the fewest hits he's ever given up as a starter (two). He issued two walks and threw two wild pitches, striking out three. Despite a 37-pitch third frame, Richmond settled down from there and did not allow a single base runner after that inning.

Wednesday July 1st, Canada Day, 1:07, SNET

James Shields, RHP (6-5, 3.41) vs Ricky Romero, LHP (5-3, 3.20)

Scouting report:

Rays: Shields had outpitched his counterpart on the Marlins, Josh Johnson, until the seventh inning, when he gave up a game-tying home run to Hanley Ramirez. It was his 10th quality start of the season, which is a team high, and the eighth consecutive start he has pitched into the seventh inning. He continues to be Tampa Bay's most consistent pitcher and appears to be pitching at his best right now.

Blue Jays: Romero took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Friday, earning the win in the Jays' 6-1 victory over the Phillies at Rogers Centre. Before the seventh inning, only one ball was hit into the outfield -- a fly ball to center field in the fifth inning. Romero allowed only two hits -- both singles -- and issued one walk, shutting out the Phillies for six innings. It was the rookie's fifth consecutive quality start.

Look out Tampa. 3 great pitchers coming at ya. Although Tampa is a great team, I think the Jays can sweep this series. Even if the Jays only get a run a game. These guys could hold the Rays scoreless.

We have our three best and consistent pitchers on the mound for this series.

Roy Halladay had trouble with the Rays last year though.

Don't look now but Tampa just passed us in the AL East standings. Hopefully that will change by the end of this series.

one of the most crucial times for the jays! 3 straight series of AL EAST teams, time to find out if these blue jays are better than last years ( at least at the all-star break)

Its hard for me to say how many they will win, great pitchers, depends on the bats in this one

Rochesta
06-29-2009, 01:39 PM
Garza will kill us as usual but I think we win the other two.

This is a critical series. We sucked during interleague and lost a lot of ground to the AL teams that actually beat up on the NL like they're supposed to. We need to have a really good stretch against the big guys to remain competitive.

I'd love to see us rattle off 8 wins in a row or something like that to get back on track but I don't see it happening very soon given the slump that Scutaro is in and the recent end to Wells's brief stint of productivity. That said, I'd like to see us rest Scutaro this week once or twice. Seemed to work for Hill a few weeks ago.

Purcey is in Triple A still. Can't give you alot of details with exact stats and everything but he is doing fine. Still issues with alot of walks. He has had some great games and some brutal games. When he gets more consistent with walks he should be back.

i love how none of the 17 people here even picked the Rays to win the series. The Rays were a hot team coming in and after watching this game, I think its gonna be a sweep. The Jays obviously need another bat and it doesnt help when u bench Rios.

Cito had to wait for the biggest series to do this. Couldnt he do it yesterday against the lefty?

You wouldn't be a fan if you say the team is going to lose 3/3 now would you?

tampa is a tough team and the Jays are in a tough stretch, you can't say we're getting swept, no reason to watch the jays if all you do is doubt their ability.

I brought up the lefty part because Bautista is a better hitter against lefties so you can afford to bench Rios when you are facing one

Baustista played LF yesterday and usually plays against lefties. So its not about sitting Rios inplace of Bautista.

Isn't it funny how just last year at this time many were doubting Romero would ever make it to the MLB because of his 5.00+ ERA. I find it funny how now people are saying he's going to be an ace someday, now i'm not saying he won't I just find it funny that that much has changed in less than a year.

tuck25

it cant be that terrible if you onyl go one game under .500. It wasn't great, but terrible isnt the word i would use, especially considering that one fo the teams were teh defending WS champs and the other is the best team in the league since April 30th.
