According to cbwilk of Talking Chop, the Braves have signed shortstop Chris Burke to a minor-league deal and assigned him to Gwinnett.

Burke's numbers: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=2164&position=2B/OF

He was the tenth overall pick in the 2001 draft, but after years of showing nothing, he's probably no more than a Quad-A player at this point, and he's probably just giving the G-Braves somebody better than fellow minor-league drifter Antonio Perez to put out at short. That said, if the Braves concede the season and trade away some guys, Burke at least has the positional flexibility to play all over the place and could see some major-league action.

One decent season followed by garbage then finally DFA'd? Sounds like Failcoeur's twin from the future.

I forgot most Braves fans will remember him best from here (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051009&content_id=1243762&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl).

Figures we let a scrub beat us. And we haven't seen the playoffs since. We need to make it again just to not let that game be our last postseason appearance anymore.

Any thoughts as to maybe he will become a utility guy for the Braves if someone like KJ leaves? If KJ left, Prado/Infante would become the full-time 2B and the other would be the primary utility man. A guy like Burke might be a good utility option as well since he has seen MLB action and can play multiple positions.

Not saying this is a pre-cursor to other moves, but could it be?

It's even worse ... Brad Ausmus (one of the worst everyday players in the league at the time) tied the game with a grand slam.

please say he plays good and fills our awful poor excuse of a ball player at 2nd.

I don't know what has happened to Kelly but Burke and Prado along with Infante will all be huge upgrades. KJ never even hits the ball hard at all. Atleast Francoeur will once in a while put a good swing on the ball what happened to Kelly?

^^At this point, ANYTHING is better than KJ. I doubt Burke will see any mjor league time.

And to think I had almost gotten over that.

Burke is just a AAA filler at this point and another utility/SS option outside Hernandez. If the braves did move one of the Infielders of Escobar/KJ than atleast they would have another option in AAA to back fill if we become sellers by the TD. But this will effectively put Norton on the street once Infante comes back and Norton comes off the DL. Norton has sucked balls this year and we will have better options in PH bats off the bench with Canizares/Infante/Hernandez/Blanco or any warm body from AAA that will produce more than Norton has this year.

You guys are ridiculous. You think that Chris Burke, who has posted an OPS over .700 exactly once in his career, is going to be more effective than Kelly Johnson?! The allegation that Johnson "never even hits the ball hard at all" is patently false, as nearly 22% of his balls in play have gone for line drives.

If you want to know what happened to Kelly, look no further than his BABIP (which is largely luck-driven, and not skill-based). Check out his month-by-month:

April: .203/.295/.391, .204 BABIP
May: .297/.333/.495, .338 BABIP
June: .143/.234/.179, .167 (!) BABIP

One month he's had normal luck (his career BABIP mark is in the .330s and it's sustainable for him due to a high line drive rate), and in that month he posted an .828 OPS. Patience.

I want to see Burke, a native of my hometown, playing. It could only benefit the Braves to let him, along with Prado, get some playing time over KJ. KJ is such a buzz kill.

He's also such a better player than Chris Burke.

Career-wise, yes KJ is the better player, but at the present, it really couldn't hurt to give it a try.

Agreed but he should take Diory's spot.

Yes by all means, let's play a guy who is a 29-year old former 1st-round pick who hasn't done anything of note since the 2005 playoffs and who couldn't even make it on the PADRES. Yeah, he's much better than Kelly.

i never said he was better and never really thought much of this signing. He wont even come up this year probably. I was just baggin on KJ again b/c u love him. Prado deserves the job hands down.

He really needs to come replace Diory
