A report from the Los Angeles Times indicated that Kobe Bryant could opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent July 1st.

Bryant conceivably could depart the Lakers for another team, but that scenario appears highly unlikely.

The club's long term outlook as a perennial title contender will affect his decision, according to sources that spoke with the Los Angeles Times.

The report from the Los Angeles Times indicated that a maximum 'extension' would be for five years and $135 million, but that is inaccurate.

If Bryant opts out of his contract, he will be eligible to sign a six-year contract for approximately $169 million. Because Bryant has more than 10 years of service, he can sign for 105% of his 08-09 salary of over $21.26 million, which would put him over $22.325 million in 09-10. He can then have 10.5% in raises each season after the first season.

If the Lakers signed Bryant to a full max deal, he would make $31.7 million in 13-14 and just over $34 million in 14-15.

Should Bryant elect to sign with another club, that team could pay him $128.6 million over five years with $29.1 million in 13-14.

Kobe's not leaving L.A., or at least he shouldn't. He'd be crazy, his legacy is cemented as a Laker. From all indications he loves it there. IDK.

He is not going anywhere. A reporter asked Kobe if he invisions playing for another team and Kobe gave a firm answer, "No."

As my friend says. If Kobe wants to repeat, 3peat or 4feat ... Kobe needs his core.

Why would Kobe leave LA?

LA can pay him more than anyone else. LA just won the title, which is EXTREMELY important to Kobe. LA is where his home and family is at. Kobe just overcame TWO challenges, bringing back the Olympic Gold to USA, and bringing back the NBA title to Los Angeles. I doubt he would move somewhere else to have a new challenge.

Time to rack up trophies.

A reporter asked Nick Saban if he invisions coaching for another team and Saban gave a firm answer, "No."

Guess what happened witht that? Of course he's going to say "No." Why the hell would he say "Yeah, I'm leaving." Especially right after a title. Athletes/Coaches lie.

This is the guy every team would want.

Orlando isn't getting him. First off, he's not going to leave LA (huge market) to go to Orlando (tiny market). Secondly, we can't afford him. Thirdly, well, it's not going to happen.

If he opts out, it's to sign another deal with LA. Plain and simple. He's not leaving LA.

Yeah, he'll opt out but he won't leave. He's just going to get a new deal, probably for more money.

why wouldnt he say that

Paraphrased, but:

Reporter: Have you ever taken performance enhancing drugs?
A-Rod: No.

Firm answers aren't always concrete in the sports world, buddy.

Not saying that I think Kobe will bolt, he has a good thing going here in LA. But I find it hard to trust athletes nowadays.

Kobe aint leaving. He likes money and attention and LA has the most of both in the NBA.

So a 5 year deal worth $135 million or $27 a year.

One way to become the best ever is to erase the one guy he compares to. If he went to Chicago & won 2-3 championships that could very well make those in Chicago, not entirely, but somewhat forget Jordan.

No. They can pay him the max, just like any other team UNDER the cap. Problem is, half the teams are over the cap. The Lakers own his Bird rights. Regardless of whether or not they are over the cap, they can sign him to any deal up to the max because he has played for the Lakers for three years+. Any other team has to be under the cap to sign him to a max deal. The Lakers CAN offer him more/just as much as any other team in the league.

Wow, nearly $30 million for one player by the end of his contract. I don't care who the player is, that kind of salary can handcuff an organizaiton.

If Kobe really truly cares about winning he will take a little less (everybody shed a tear for the guy making $20 million a year) to get everybody signed

sp1derm00
06-15-2009, 02:59 PM
I think Kobe is gonna wait and see if Ariza and Odom are resigned, then talk to the Lakers management and see what they can do for him.

Kobe isn't stupid. He knows that no matter what, the Lakers organization will be making money. Kobe is the NBA's biggest draw. Losing him would be devastating. As long as Kobe gets LO and Ariza back, he will go to management and be able to demand more money, should he choose.

haha He's definitely not leaving LA....No chance....

BUT if he wanted to make a ridiculously crazy run and bring multiple championships to a city that he would be a LEGEND in in 5 years of playing then Orlando is certainly it. Orlando wouldn't be stopped if he went there by no one.

But LIKE I SAID....That aint happening.

Championships is where it is at. The guy has enough money that he can walk away and have his great great great great grandchildren set for life. So if he plays anywhere it is going to be where he feels he can win another championship.

Kobe wants to see #24 next to #32, 44, 33, 13, 22, 25, and 42. He's a Laker for life. And hopefully he'll take less money, maybe do what Magic did and take a vested interest with the team so he can take less salary, and we can resign all our guys.

He will not opt out. He has a much too easy time on that team, and he still gets all the credit. That is exactly how he likes it best, so he isn't going anywhere until that changes.

king4day
06-16-2009, 09:22 AM
The next best thing to Kobe leaving LA would be him signing a 6 year Max extension with LA. Once he starts to decline and they need to add players to replace some of his production, the team will be strapped.

He'll probably opt out just so he can resign and end his career in LA.

He Opts so he can get the longer contract IMO. Only way I think he doesn't re-sign is if Odom and Ariza aren't re-signed or replaced adequately. I have to do it, 2 crazy scenarios.

*Signs with Cleveland, in a sinister plot to "carry" Lebron to a title. So he can take Lebron's eventual spotlight.
*Signs with the Clippers and takes on the challenge of taking them to the promise land.

will he opt out? probley, but it will be for a longer contract and most likely more money.

I agree that I think he should remain in LA for this career but Laker fans and anyone else should be foolish to think he wouldn't consider it. Wasn't it like a yr or so ago he was trying to force a trade? Yes and that's "after" 3 championships in LA. Maybe he wants to do somthing Jordan never did and lead 2 teams to championships. Noone knows what the guy is thinking.
