NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug screening May 1 at Richmond International Raceway, ESPN The Magazine has learned from two independent sources.

In court papers filed in the past two weeks (Mayfield sought a temporary restraining order to return to the track; NASCAR countersued), it was revealed and acknowledged by Mayfield that he had ingested a double dosage of over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin-D immediately prior to the Richmond drug test.

He also revealed that he was taking prescription Adderall-XR, which the racer claims had recently been prescribed by a physician to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

However, a third drug came up positive during the urine-based Richmond test and had not been previously identified. The name of the drug in question has been redacted from court documents and was not specified by either Mayfield or NASCAR because of the conditions of a May 29 gag order issued by Mecklenburg Count Superior Court in North Carolina.

Mayfield filed for a temporary restraining order in that court, asking to be allowed to compete while his case with NASCAR was ongoing. Judge Forrest Bridges denied the request. During the hearing, NASCAR attorney Paul Hendrick described the unidentified drug as a "dangerous, illegal banned substance."

Moron. He just any respect that he had left from the other drivers.

he was one of the very few drivers that had no problems moving earnhardt out of his way to win however. For that reason I did like him.

Jeff Burton didn't have any kind words for Mayfield and he certainly didn't worry about telling us how he really feels.
