NBA Plans a "Major Announcement"

June 6, 2009 5:29 PM

An NBA press release:

WHAT: Major NBA Announcement

WHO: David Stern, NBA Commissioner
Timothy J. Leiweke, President & CEO AEG
Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles
Jan Perry, Councilwoman Ninth District

WHEN: Sunday, June 7 @ 4:15 pm PT

WHERE: STAPLES Center Interview Room

I have no insider information, but given the local politicians, you have to assume it's an announcement about something that's going to happen in Los Angeles. And Leiweke himself was the source of a recent story speculating that the NBA draft could be leaving New York and moving to Los Angeles.espn (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-41-33/NBA-Plans-a--Major-Announcement-.html)

2011 NBA ALL-STAR GAME to be held at Staples Center

I've learned that the NBA will announce tomorrow (Sunday) that the 2011 NBA All-Star game will be played at Staples Center.

This is a major acquisition for the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), who will have their billion dollar hotel complex--half Ritz-Carlton and half Marriott--open for business long before the game. It will be the second All Star game played at Staples, which last hosted the game in 2004. But this time around, the entire LA Live complex (which had not been built in '04), is expected to host a variety of events surrounding All Star weekend.

Staples Center officials had no comment today, but AEG President Tim Leiweke, mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and NBA Commissioner David Stern will make the announcement at 4:15 PST Sunday.

That pick was RIGHTFULLY booed. the ONLY reason the Knicks took Danilo was to satisfy D'Antoni's obssession with Italy. Hell, did you see that the Knicks just paid for the WHOLE coaching staff to go to Italy recently...even though Ricky Rubio isn't even going to practice.

"Major" - Can be the sale of the Bobcats ? , A new expansion team ?, Change of Playoffs and Finals setup, 1-1-2-2-1 ?, maybe the NBA has void LeBron's contract and he will sign with Knicks, today?

If they announce that the All Star Game will be LA .... Thats stupid. I want bigger news

OR it might have to be something with the refs ? Maybe a fourth ref for the playoffs/finals

Doubt that, but if thats the case, it would have to be for next year's draft. There isn't enough time until the draft for the NBA to make that drastic of a change.

I say that because I was reading an article in which people were lobbying for Stern to get rid of it and he said he would consider it..

yes but sometimes people say they'll "consider something" as a polite way to say no

and yes people lobbying him, they always have but both he and the majority of population(not die hards) still back the age limit.its not going away until there that outcry from owner,gm's and coaches(all who like this way better)and people turn against it

and lastly you know that the press conference has nothing to do with it because why have la councilwomen and mayor there for that

TMBRWLVS9
06-07-2009, 03:06 PM
Draft isn't moving. Age limit isn't changing. Stern isn't retiring. WNBA isn't going away (yet)

Its definitely the all-star game. Once again, a joint Lakers-Clippers "Staples Center" host game.

IndyRealist

Age limit is not changing. Stern likes it, says it's good for the league. The other major player to consider is the NCAA, who loves the age limit because they're getting more quality players who draw an audience, even if it's only for one year.

All-star game needs to go to an NBA city that's hurting financially, like Indianapolis. :smoking:

I may be a lil biased but I think that Charlotte should get an all-star game. The winter weather here is beautiful and this place loves basketball. I know most of the love is for college but if we got an all-star game I think it could help repair the relationship with these fans toward the NBA and really help the Bobcats expand their fan base. I think these are the types of issues that should play into the thinking of the NBA when deciding where to play it.
