Game 3 Starters

Pirates probable pitcher

Ross Ohlendorf

* #49 RHP
* (5-5) 4.45 ERA 32 SO

Ohlendorf wasn\\\'t able to string together two straight solid starts, as he lasted just 5+ innings and gave up four runs in a loss to Houston. Ohlendorf\\\'s 97 pitches were the second most of the season, and his three walks tied for a season high. Ohlendorf has two appearances against the Mets in his career, although neither have been starts. He has struggled in those two games, however, as he surrendered 10 runs in only 1 2/3 innings. The Mets are hitting .615 against Ohlendorf in his career, which is the highest batting average for any team against the right-hander.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

* #34 RHP
* (4-1) 3.88 ERA 23 SO

Pelfrey continued his run of excellent outings, overcoming some personal demons against the Marlins by allowing just one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings on Friday. It was Pelfrey\\\'s longest start of the season, and the first in which he had given up fewer than two runs. Pelfrey faces a Pirates team against which he has never yielded an earned run. That comprises only one career start, however, when Pelfrey pitched seven shutout innings en route to a 2-1 victory last August.

*Pirates Note
Heading into Wednesday\\\'s game against the Mets, Delwyn Young leads a Pirates bench that is tied for sixth in the NL with 17 pinch-hits through Monday\\\'s games.

*Mets Note
After Sean Green provided 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief Tuesday, manager Jerry Manuel emphasized the importance of the bullpen, especially after Mike Pelfrey pitches Wednesday.

PITTSBURGH -- After back-to-back painful losses here, the patchwork Mets are counting on Mike Pelfrey to turn the tide when he takes the mound tonight against the Pirates at PNC Park.

Pelfrey has been outstanding in his past four starts, giving up just seven earned runs in a combined 27 2/3 innings over that span. That includes his best outing of the year last Friday against Florida at Citi Field, when he gave up just one run in 7 2/3 innings.

Pelfrey won his only career start against the Pirates, throwing seven scoreless innings here last Aug. 15 in a 2-1 Mets victory.

Pelfrey will square off against ex-Yankee Ross Ohlendorf, who is riding a personal two-game losing streak. Ohlendorf has faced the Mets twice, both times as a reliever with the Yankees in 2008, and is 0-0 with a 54.00 ERA.

Here is the 28-23 Mets\' order for the 7:05 p.m. game:

Alex Cora SS
Luis Castillo 2B
Daniel Murphy 1B
Gary Sheffield RF
David Wright 3B
Fernando Martinez LF
Omir Santos C
Jeremy Reed CF
Mike Pelfrey RHP (4-1, 3.88)

Pelfrey\'s numbers against the Pirates\' hitters

The 24-28 Pirates will counter with:

Nyjer Morgan LF
Freddy Sanchez 2B
Nate McLouth CF
Adam LaRoche 1B
Andy LaRoche 3B
Brandon Moss RF
Jason Jaramillo C
Jack Wilson SS
Ross Ohlendorf RHP (5-5, 4.45)

double header just a rescheduled game later on in the year. Either way you guys will have played the same amount of games as the Mets so your looking at a 2 or 3 game lead at the end of the night.

whats going on guys yankee fan here i just wanted to say i love the deal you guys made, Mccutchen is defently ready for the bigs and Mccloiuth in my opinion was a one year wonder... getting gorkys Hernandez who is a highly touted prospect to go along with the outfielders u have now in mccutchen and Tabata that could become something special... im kind of hoping you deal freddy sanchez along with some other to get back more real solid prospects and start building the organization the right way..

Pittsburgh, I can't thank you enough!

This is the Met's in a nut-shell regarding J.J. Putz, but their lackluster performance year in and year out:

"I watched some film today, and we think we've found a pretty big, glaring mechanical flaw that's kind of slowly progressed, maybe even through last year," Putz said. "I think we're going in the right direction."

Putz being demoted to the 7th inning, Pelfrey (#2) gave up 7ER in the steel city, falling off the mound on his face to start off Citi Field and 2 balks in 1 inning---->Priceless

it Wasn't really us.As much as we played well, they had 1 bad pitching performance. Santana pitched well enough to win but they have no offense to score runs without Reyes and Delgado.Also Beltran wasn't in the lineup.Game 1 we stole because of Putz.So actually thank Putz and the Mets injuries for us winning this series.
