Cubs: This was supposed to be Carlos Zambrano's start, but he's serving a six-game suspension for his antics in last Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Instead, Wells will try for his first win. The rookie right-hander has thrown three straight quality starts, but has yet to get a "W." In his last outing Thursday against the Dodgers, he gave up two runs on eight hits over seven innings and struck out seven. He threw 111 pitches, 70 for strikes. That's a good ratio.

http://a.espncdn.com/media/apphoto/3d0a026e-8ce1-4f7e-87eb-267b4dc95826_thumbnail.jpg

Braves: Looking to improve his control, Kawakami has recently focused on attacking the strike zone early in the count. This approach worked on May 22, when he threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of the 27 batters he faced and held the Blue Jays scoreless over eight innings. But with an average fastball that is occasionally flat, this approach could also prove costly against an aggressive lineup. The 33-year-old right-hander struggled with his control on Wednesday, when he issued four walks and allowed nine hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Giants.

Wednesday, June 3 Turner Field | 7:00 PM ET

Ted Lilly, LHP (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?roster_year=2009&player_id=150404&c_id=chc) (6-4, 3.50) Cubs (25-23) @ Derek Lowe, RHP (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?roster_year=2009&player_id=117955&c_id=atl) (6-3, 3.49) Braves (25-25)

Scouting Report:

Cubs: Lilly leads the Cubs in wins and quality starts (seven) after beating the Dodgers, 2-1, in his last start. He gave up four runs, including a homer by Matt Kemp that landed in the basket rimming the left-field bleachers. When he pitches seven or more innings, Lilly is 2-2 with a 1.55 ERA in four starts. He will miss Wrigley Field, as four of his six wins have come at home.

http://a.espncdn.com/media/apphoto/f3e1b078-d0c8-48ba-97f0-3bb421dd3d9f_thumbnail.jpg

Braves: Lowe proved to be his biggest critic after his last start, saying he "pitched poorly" against the Diamondbacks on Thursday at Chase Field. The big right-hander gave up a season-high 10 hits in seven innings in the loss. He was charged with five runs, but only three earned in the hard-luck loss. He still has pitched at least seven innings in four of his last seven starts. He still ranks among the league leaders in wins, innings pitched and games started.

Thursday, June 4 Turner Field | 7:00 PM ET

Carlos Zambrano, RHP (http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?roster_year=2009&player_id=407296&c_id=chc) (3-2, 4.22) Cubs (25-23) @ Jair Jurrjens, RHP (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?roster_year=2009&player_id=457453&c_id=atl) (5-2, 2.59) Braves (25-25)

Scouting Report:

http://a.espncdn.com/media/apphoto/5375a8d0-0e07-42c0-864c-db642c18eb1f_thumbnail.jpg

Cubs: This will be Zambrano's first start back after serving his six-game suspension. The right-hander was penalized for his antics on May 27, when he argued a close call at home plate, threw a baseball into left field then hurled his glove. Zambrano took his frustrations out on a Gatorade dispenser in the Cubs dugout. As far as pitching goes, he's one win away from No. 100 in his career and needs four K's to tie Bill Hutchinson for sixth on the team's all-time strikeout list. Before he was ejected, Zambrano gave up two runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings against the Pirates.

http://a.espncdn.com/media/apphoto/3d392ffe-aa2e-4823-9275-ac8d38bd4b6f_thumbnail.jpg

Braves: The right-hander received the run support he had been seeking all season but struggled in the 88-pitch outing against the Diamondbacks in his last time out. Against Arizona, Jurrjens was charged with eight hits and five runs in five innings pitched. He had pitched at least six innings in his four previous starts and seven of his last eight before the outing in Arizona.

Glavine could join Braves during homestand
Atlanta (25-25) vs. Chicago (25-23), 7 p.m. ET

PHOENIX -- It'll be home sweet home for the Braves, who open a 10-game stand at Turner Field against the Cubs on Tuesday night. The Brewers and Pirates follow them in. But even better still, the Braves could have veteran left-hander Tom Glavine back in the rotation before they hit the road again on June 12.

It'll all depend on his next rehab start on Tuesday night for the Braves' affiliate at Class A Rome, Ga.

"If all goes well, we should see him on the next homestand," said manager Bobby Cox about the pitcher who has amassed 305 wins in 21 seasons, 244 of them for the Braves. "He looked pretty good in Spring Training. If he pitches anything like that, he'll help us."

Glavine threw well and felt good physically after his five-inning rehab stint for Triple-A Gwinnett this past Thursday. Glavine threw 41 of his 67 pitches for strikes, allowing six hits, striking out two and walking one in five scoreless innings against Indianapolis. Glavine was hoping to rejoin the Braves on Tuesday night in Atlanta, but instead the club opted for one last Minor League rehab assignment.

The 43-year-old is coming back from an August surgery that repaired the flexor tendon in his pitching elbow and cleared debris from the left shoulder. His elbow has been fine since the surgery, but he aggravated the shoulder in April while swinging a bat and hasn't pitched for Atlanta this season.

Despite all this uncertainty, the Braves re-signed him as a free agent on Feb. 20. And Glavine seemed right on target when he made three Spring Training starts, going 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, allowing three runs and 12 hits in 12 innings. In the Grapefruit League he walked none and struck out four.

Glavine's fastball is now in the 83-86 mph range, and he's comfortable with that. "It's just a matter of getting my location to where I want it to be," Glavine said. "The big thing for me now with my strength getting back to where I need it to be is I have to fight muscling up the ball a little bit. That's not my style of pitching."

Pitching matchup

ATL: RHP Kenshin Kawakami (3-6, 4.73 ERA)
Looking to improve his control, Kawakami has recently focused on attacking the strike zone early in the count.

CHC: RHP Randy Wells (0-2, 1.80 ERA)
This was supposed to be Carlos Zambrano's start, but he's serving a six-game suspension for his antics in last Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

Tidbits

Third baseman Chipper Jones continues to play with a sore big right toe that is hampering his movement. Jones said he aggravated some old bunions on May 22, running out a ground ball and has been hobbled ever since. He sat out Saturday's 11-inning 3-2 loss to the D-backs save for a ninth-inning pinch-hit appearance (he struck out looking), but was back in the starting lineup on Sunday. "He's playing, but it's not good," Cox said. "I think it's going to linger for a while. I'll give him a day off here and there and maybe he can get some time off during the [July 13-15] All-Star break." The just-concluded seven-game trip included Jones' first four-strikeout game of his career this past Wednesday at San Francisco, during which Giants left-hander Randy Johnson won the 299th game. Still after Sunday's game in which Jones had three hits -- including a two-run homer -- and four RBIs, he is batting .316 with five homers and 21 RBIs, having hit safely in 30 of the 41 games he's played in this season. braves.com

For this home stand to be a success we have to go (7-3), that's 2 out of 3 vs. the Cubs and Brew Crew and 3 out of 4 from the Buckos, that's possible!

Things get a lot more interesting now, we can move Gregor to the leadoff, and do any variety of things but my guess is...

Blanco
Esco
Chip
Mc
Anderson
Kotcher
Franky
Johnson

Or flip flop Johnson and Franky but I kind of like Kelly in the 8 spot to at least get the pitcher out of the way, it's like having 2 lead off hitters one at the top and one at the bottom of the lineup...

That is true, but we turned it around on our last home stand, and I believe when we have good pitching in a series we are doing a better job of getting W's. And I know we just went 2-5 on our road trip, but we had pretty crappy pitching to go along with no run support. Even when we won those 2 games, JJ gave up 5, however Medlin did just surrender 1.

I can't figure out why sometimes we are patient and the rest of the time it's 1 pitch or nothing. We've shown that when we are patient, we may not always win or score a lot of runs, but we make the pitcher work and we knock him out of the game by the 6th. Yet we just go right back to swinging early at every opportunity.

I truly believe they make up whether they are going to be patient or not before the game as a unit.

In this case, the braves see it's a rookie on the mound and they are just zeroing in on the fastball. It doesn't matter where it is, they have already made up their mind that that is the pitch they will swing at...and that is what they have been doing...they don't "adjust."

Maybe but it fails far more than it succeeds. It's just like when they were talking about Francoeur hitting .420 on the first pitch. It still means 6 times out of 10 you're getting out on 1 pitch. And if you're always swinging at the first pitch, you're constantly behind 0-1.

And when it's not working, you'd think they would change it up. But nope.

GA's lack of mobility were factors on the double and the pop up.it isn't like the dude can't move, he just chooses not to. That's uncalled for, at least Diaz and franky sprint when they are going after the ball in the corner...or at least increase their speed in some fashion.

Garrett just keeps a constant speed all the time.

But nope.

It becomes an individual effort when veering from the game plan. Ability is the key factor then. We're low on resources.

nps6724

a team player does everything he can to get on, franky just wanted to get out. no reason to swing at that pitch.
