West has regrets

Jerry West, the man responsible for bringing Kobe Bryant to the Lakers in a 1996 draft-day trade, basically retracted his comments last week that Cleveland forward LeBron James had passed Bryant as the game's best player.

"I said something that I wish I wouldn't have said, to be honest with you, because it was in no way demeaning to Kobe Bryant," West said in a recent interview on "The Jim Rome Show."

"I love his passion. I want him to win a championship without Shaquille O'Neal because I think it would vindicate him in some respect. If I had to watch a player play, there's about four players I would pay to see play on a regular basis, and Kobe Bryant certainly would be at the top of that list. Late in the game, who are you going to take to make a shot, who are you going to take in the last quarter of a game? Kobe Bryant's still the best in the league.

"If that comment upset him, I hope he uses it the right way and it propelled him to win another championship. I'm an unabashed Laker fan."

I found this very funny... the irony.

why should he feel bad, he is right. lebron is having one of the best individual performances during an entire series ever, he's a walking triple double, scoring damn near 40 a game, and doing it all basically by himself. anyone who cant tip his hat and say damn, he is the best is just stuck on dumb.

I don't think it affected Kobe that much. If anything it prolly only motivated him a lil bit more when he first said the statement. I don't see the point of him apologizing.

He just said he regrets saying it, because people think he hates kobe or something.

who would I take in the 4th Q? well watching last nights game puts a stamp on it, I would take lebron.

But last second shot? Kobe has taken more, so I would take him.

All he is saying is he regrets saying it publically. He didn't say he changed his mind.

Its not bigger than the playoffs cuz thats where championships happen. Nothing is bigger than championships, but it is BIG. Because I was hurt when he originally said that lebron had taken the throne from kobe.

Maybe he's just trying to motivate Lebron.

Wasn't that the idiotic tagline used last week?

Lebron is simply athletic...it will only get you so far.

Don't worry, I'm not biased.

Who do you go to with the time running down, and you need a big shot? Or who do you want to have the ball in their hands to manage a comeback in the 4th. My vote goes to Kobe over and over and over and over again. Lebron is great, he's beyond great, but to put him in a class with MJ and Kobe is premature. Yeah the skills are there. The stats are there. But the poise isn't even close. Last night when the Cavs won, Lebron was dishing the ball out more in the 4th, rather than trying to be a one man show. They weren't playing down though so it was easier for him to trust his teammates. When the Cavs are down, Lebron is a different player. His intentions are good, being that he wants to win, but he needs to harness his abilities and trust the guys around him. Even if they struggled the whole game. If he just kicked it out one or two times rather than shoot 2 airballs, and turn it over 7 times in game 4, there is a good chance this series is 3-2 in favor of the Cavs. But he didn't and that's why they are still on the brink of elimination.

Why does Kobe need any Vindication from anyone? I don't remember Jordan on the court by himself winning a championship. I don't remember Shaq doing the same. Does D-Wade need to win a championship without Shaq? I don't think we have this conversation if that scandal never happens. I guess we all forget that basketball is a team sport. so many questions

It is still worthy news, and nobody should be discouraged from posting that. I agree though it has little value compared to the playoffs

I'm just happy that I get to watch two of the greatest players of my generation play every night this week. It's been truly incredible.

I agree with what your saying, basketball is a team sport. But if any one player could do it with a limited cast, it was MJ. That is what seperates MJ from Kobe, Lebron, and Wade. The Bulls won their championships with Jordan, Pippen, and a Defensive and Rebounding Specialist in Rodman.

Here is the starting lineup for the best season in NBA history. This is why MJ will and always will be the best ever. He had a team full of roll players, and Pippen. But they won because Jordan is the best of all time. They won because they had one of the greatest coaches ever. Does Lebron, Wade, or Kobe win a title with that supporting cast. I highly doubt it.

Starting:
Ron Harper
MJ
Pippen
Rodman
Longley

Bench:
Kukoc
Wennington
Kerr
Simpkins
Buechler
Haley
Edwards
Caffey
Salley
Brown

Me too. But I'm for the underdogs when my team is out, so go Orlando and go Denver.

If all the times he charged got called, he'd foul out at about 3 P-3 R-3 A.

What a homer. He made his statement I think before the Conference Finals began. Now that LBJ is on the brink of elimination, whilst Kobe is on the brink of another Finals appearance, he retracts his statement.

Watch out for him making another statement if and when we see a Cavs-Nuggets Finals.

HOMER :speechless:
