All right guys so this year we have the LA Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers who are either tied in their series or behind. That series is more hyped than last years Boston LA series that actually happened. So this brings up the question. What was the most hyped team to not win a championship?

You can't get anymore hyped than this Cleveland Cavs team, who are good, but have yet to play anybody until this series...what a surprise, its not a cake walk.

I just can't wait to hear the excuses if they don't win the title.

Has to be the 2003-04 Lakers.

People were handing them the trophy before the season started when they brought in Malone and Payton.

Hmmm. Who was the Pistons point guard then??

I would definately agree with that one even i was on the bandwagon of them winning that year even though i hate the lakers. But they weren't all that great.

Yeah. It's that Lakers team with Payton and Malone.

The people who said the Suns.....we were picked to win the title by a lot of people, but we always had quite a lot of people badmouthing us as well.

not that I disagree about the 03-04 Lakers, but to keep the thread interesting I'll throw out another one. The 1993-1994 Knicks were hyped for two years after they took the Bulls to 7 games in 1992 in the semifinals and were picked to defeat Chicago in 1993 because they had home court advantage and won the first two games before blowing and losing four straight. in 1994, with Jordan retired, the Knicks were picked by just about everybody to win it, and nearly did, until John Starks couldn't hit the broad side of the barn in game 7. Two years of hype, 3 all stars in 1994, no jordan-nemesis, no ring.

Good post. That was heartbreak for the Knicks.

I'm right there with you man. Also the 06-07 Mavs seemed unstoppable. And consider what happened in the Finals the year before, it was their year.

In BBall I would have to say the seattle supersonics when they lost in the 1st round to the nuggets. The Patriots Have to be the alltime, over hyped, Epic fail in sports history.

I think there's a difference between a disappointing team (Suns, Mavs) and a hyped team (03-04 Lakers, 93-94 Knicks).

I have to agree with this. There's probably some more throughout history that I don't know about, but the '04 Lakers really stand out in my mind :sigh:

I never believed in them. I never had them getting past the Spurs, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that.

Yeah, that's why I fail to see the hype for the Suns. There were so many detractors. When the Lakers added Payton and Malone there was talk like it was a super-team that no one would be able to beat. Whole other level of hype.

The only other team I've seen that much hype for was last year's Celtics. But they won, so they don't belong in the thread.

89 lakers.

I mean, hey already had the Magic, Kareem, scott, worthy, thompson, Ac Green and coop and then they go and add Orlando woolridge who was one of the best players back then........

Malone seemed to fit pretty well into the Shaq/Kobe offense. There was a big problem with Payton though, he struggled with the triangle offense, and Phil Jackson didn't want to go to the pick and roll. I remember Payton getting benched a few times in crunch time as well, it was a disaster.

I remember a lot of people thinking that as good of a year as the suns had in 05-06, that with the addition of Amare that they were a lock to win. Everyone in the media and in Arizona kept played up the hype with their motto "eyes on the prize"

The Suns' marketing slogan for the 2006-07 season was Eyes on the Prize. Billboards and bus wraps showed closeups of the eyes of a different Suns player, each face photographed in a strongly tinted purple color (orange on some ads), with small reflections of the NBA championship trophy reflected in the pupils.

I'd say that's A LOT of hype, not just disappointment.

Yeah, but that was just in Phoenix. The media this year has practically crowned the Cavs or Lakers, and in 03-04, there was "no way" the Lakers were going to lose according to league-wide analysts and media.

2003-04 Los Angeles Lakers -- yes
2006-07 Phoenix Suns -- disappointment
2006-07 Dallas Mavericks -- disappointment
2007-08 Los Angeles Lakers -- no, it was the Celtics who got the hype
1999-00 Portland Trailblazers -- disappointment
1995-96 Orlando Magic -- that was the Bulls 72-10 season, so the Bulls got all the hype
1996-97 Houston Rockets -- wasn't that Karl Malone's MVP year? The hype that year went to the Jazz, if not the Bulls, who won 69 games

Sounds like you're listing big disappointments, not over-hyped teams that failed to deliver.

If the Celtics hadn't won last year, or if the Jazz had knocked off the Bulls in 1996-97, THAT would have been a hyped team failing to win.

03-04 Lakers are up there for sure
The Suns from 06-07 are as well.
I'm not sure I can include any team from like 00-05 from the Western Conference. I mean, the Kings, Spurs, Lakers, Blazers, Wolves among others were all damn good team, and I don't think anyone really was overhyping those teams. They were all damn good teams and I think everyone knew it was going to be a hell of a battle out West.

True enough, i was trying to think of another team with alot of talent that pretty much underachieved, and that was the suns in my opinion..
but your right they werent even hyped up all that much..

It was the Lakers with Kobe, Shaq, Payton, and Malone. It always amazes me that a team with Nash, Johnson, Marion, and Stoudemire couldn't win a title. I feel sorry for the Suns.

That Laker team with Kobe, Shaq, Payton, and Malone should've won a title and really lost a championship because of internal problems. When Shaq won title without Kobe and Kobe got back to the Finals without Shaq it really makes you realize that Kobe and Shaq costs themselves a title in 04.
