LA Lakers will have the Homecourt Advantage

Series Tied 0-0 Series Breakdown

Tue May 19, 2009 Game 1 - 9:00 pm EDT ESPN Denver @ LA Lakers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009051913)

The Los Angeles Lakers stepped off one thrill ride and, after little time to catch their breath, have to jump on another.

No big deal, Kobe Bryant(notes) said Monday, the only day the top-seeded Lakers had to prepare for the Western Conference finals against Chauncey Billups(notes), Carmelo Anthony(notes) and the rest of the second-seeded Denver Nuggets.

“You just get after it. We’re pretty familiar with this team,” Bryant said.

Game 1 is Tuesday night at Staples Center. The Lakers will be trying to get back to the NBA finals for the second straight year while the Nuggets will be trying to get there for the first time.

“Honestly, when we played them in Denver, the second-to-last time we played them, I told Melo, ‘I’ll see you in the Western Conference finals,’ because I just felt like they had all the pieces there,” Bryant said. “They had the depth, the toughness. They had the camaraderie. It’s no surprise to me that they’re here.”

Agreed. Game one is very telling. Home court means too much in the series. The Lakers have been dominant at home, and shaky on the road. Neither team can afford to lost at home. If the Nuggets get killed tonight, I'm not going to like their chances to win. If they play a close game, they have a real chance, win or lose. If they win, I think they have the extreme upper hand.

First team to lose at home loses this series IMO.

I see a two things being big factors tonight.

1. The Nuggets have had 5 days off. While that may help them in the long run of the series, it could hurt them in game 1. Their shooting touch might be slightly off, and they might be a bit rusty. Maybe not, but it's a real possibility, especially for a guy

2. It's in LA, where the Lakers are very good, and the Nuggets don't play well at Staples.

I don't know what's going to happen tonight. Denver's Balling, but has had 6 days of waiting that may cause a slow start. I think LA will probably win tonight, but it will come down to the fourth quarter and will be a close one.

I expect Denver to come in and steal one in game 2 then take care of business at home.

Yeah Denver might be a little rusty from having those 6 days off but, even if they lose tonight I still have them beating LA in 6 games. The better team usually wins in the Conference Finals and Denver is clearly the better team especially on the defensive end.

Nuggets by 2... Lakers, will get to the free throw line alot... but nuggets will play consistant, expect melo to play big 49 points, Billups 25 point, Birdman 5 block-shots, JR smith with 18 points, Nene with 12 points.. Kobe will be off tonight, with 32 points, and Gasol will out play Nene... and have 41 points... playoff high for him.. Nene needs to play hard defense for us to dominate

Helluva a good game. It's a good sign that the Nuggets are hanging with the Lakers on the road. They're shooting themselves in the foot though missing a ton of free throws. Lakers getting some big, and very opportune threes keeping them in this.

Should be a great second half. Gotta think Chauncey and Smith get it going for the Nuggets...and that the Laker bigs do too. I do think Denver's front court is a lot tougher than the Rockets, so I'm not shocked they're outplaying Pau, Odom and Bynum, but I'm surprised they're getting scored on this easily.

And lastly, Jalen said it on his twitter...Nene is a beast. He said he's the second best athletic big man in the game behind Dwight. Not sure about that...but no big runs the court better than him.

Cause he freaked out yelling at the ref after getting away with all the other fouls they had gotten away with. Plus, that was so clearly a goal tending. I mean seriously. LA only played good for about 8 minutes that half. They finally seemed to get into it as well. If they show up in the 3rd Quarter, it could get fun for us.

They are 20th,like someone said.

But Chauncey and JR have missed 6 total. They aren't bad shooters. They should make those. They aren't the reason the Nugs are 20th.

Well part of the reason the Denver bigs are getting off is because of how we're playing them. We're really laying off them daring them to shoot jumpers, but then we're not rolling on help defense, and they're cutting well for some easy hoops.

The refs have let both teams play all night long. It seems worse because the fans are really into it. I mean, Melo has already been T'd and Karl has been barking all night. It hasn't been bad...just loose, for both teams.

The Nuggets have shot 23 FT's to LA's 11..........that's more than double. I wouldn't say that's letting them play. Maybe the refs are letting the Nuggets play defense, but they sure aren't letting the Lakers. I'm not one to complain about officiating, but this is looking pretty blatant to me.

That's because all of our players are in foul trouble and your team is getting all of the calls. If we touch your players your getting the foul call, but our players are getting butchered with no call. I don't mind the refs letting them play, but at least be consistent.
