Shaquille O'Neal, the 7-foot-1 center for the Phoenix Suns, is in town today taking a broadcasting course at Syracuse University.

O'Neal is enrolled in Sportscaster U (http://blog.syracuse.com/sports/2009/05/flashback_feature_sportscaster.html), a crash course designed to teach athletes about the broadcasting industry. He arrived on Sunday, went to dinner at Prime Steakhouse on Geddes Street and started school this morning at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

"We're working on voice-overs, doing some on-camera work and working on his delivery," said Sportscaster U instructor Dave Ryan.

O'Neal will be in class today and tomorrow and leave on Wednesday.

Ryan, an ESPN play-by-play announcer and SU radio play-by-play announcer Matt Park, started the program last year.

Sounds like the coming of a second Charles Barkley.

For those of you that don't know, SU is the top broadcasting school in the country producing names such as Marv Albert, Bob Costas, Sean McDonough, Mike Tirico, Dick Stockton, Ian Eagle, Jayson Stark, Ted Koppel. Not sure the effectiveness of a 2 day crash course but I guess it is a start.

A 2 day course, that should really help.....

Shaq's hilarious, but he wouldn't make a good tv analyst. He's too quiet, I just can't see him doing a good job.

Just basic stuff. Last year they had Eric Snow, Samaki Walker, Casey Jacobsen and Adrian Griffen.

2 days would do a lot. Shaq's done film work and all he has to learn are the broadcasting mechanics.

maybe his voice is too quiet, but all that takes is a volume knob. he himself never shuts up.

Never really took into consideration how big he really is till I went up to the University and saw him. LSU? Shaq went to college at Syracuse:rolleyes:

I think the guy you quoted meant that the other analysts would just talk over Shaq...

He also needs to find more things to put 'The Big' in front of. Hard times...

Great, now we get to try and understand his low talker voice and bad jokes. He should fit right in at TNT, though they'll probably wanna reinforce their studios a bit with fatties like Shaq and Barkley on set.

First things first, I think Shaq would be a good sports analyst. But he's still in the Phoenix roster, and this move is a year too sooner.

Nonetheless, I admire Shaq for taking his education very seriously (he's got an MBA degree). This is something that makes him a good role model to others
