Wayman Tisdale, the legendary Oklahoma Sooner who this year was elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame, died Friday morning. He was 44.

His passing was confirmed by the University of Oklahoma.

The three-time All-American at Oklahoma, who lost his right leg to bone cancer, had been fighting the disease since 2007. The cancer was discovered when doctors were repairing his leg, which he broke after falling down stairs in his home.

It was determined, then, that the the best course of treatment was to amputate Tisdale's leg, just above the knee.

Tisdale was a collegiate star at Oklahoma, where he averaged 25.6 points and 10.1 rebounds during his three-year career.

He played 12 seasons in the NBA, averaging 15.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in 840 games. His best season came in 1989-90 with Sacramento, where he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Very sad news. I remember watching ESPN's piece on him getting through the initial stages of the cancer and without hesitation, having his leg amputated. He was in very high spirits. This is shocking to me.

This is really sad. He was one of the most optimistic people to have grace the hardwood. He was a good musician too. He will be sorely missed.

Wow, sad news, RIP

He was one of my favourite players back in the day with the kings.

He was smooth.

And also a good bass player.

Yeah that is to bad for Tisdale........I will never forget what they called the Tizzy flip which was basically a finger roll type layup he used to do while playing in Sacramento.

He was also an awesome bass player and jazz composer.......my instrument of choice but not really my musical taste. I could still appreciate his jams though even if I am not a big jazz fan.

RIP Wayman

sad news. I always been a WT fan from his OS days to IP to PS. I saw him play many times. I remember being at a nets game in the mid 80's(pacers)relatively quiet in the staduim and i yelled Hey Wayman, Hey Wayman, he looked right at me about three rows in and said "What" and started laughing. Nice guy and the dude had a nice jumper. Talented all around
