View Full Version : The Curse of Eliminating the Houston Rockets - Interesting Facts and Details

JordansBulls

This is contributed by rocketman101 on real.gm. He came up with the research on this.

No Eastern Conference team or Western Conference team that has eliminated the Rockets in rounds prior to the NBA Finals has ever gone on to win the championship.

The Lakers will be cursed if they go on and eliminate the Rockets, losing in either the West Finals or the NBA Finals.

1969 --- Atlanta, eliminated by LA
1975 --- Boston, eliminated by the Bullets
1977 --- Philadelphia, eliminated by Portland
1979 --- Atlanta, eliminated by the Bullets
1980 --- Boston, eliminated by Philadelphia
1982 --- Seattle, eliminated by San Antonio
1985 --- Utah, eliminated by Denver
1987 --- Seattle, eliminated by LA
1988 --- Dallas, eliminated by LA
1989 --- Seattle, eliminated by LA
1990 --- LA, eliminated by Phoenix
1991 --- LA, eliminated by Chicago
1993 --- Seattle, eliminated by Phoenix
1996 --- Seattle, eliminated by Chicago
1997 --- Utah, eliminated by Chicago
1998 --- Utah, eliminated by Chicago
1999 --- LA, eliminated by San Antonio
2004 --- LA, eliminated by Detroit
2005 --- Dallas, eliminated by Phoenix
2007 --- Utah, eliminated by San Antonio
2008 --- Utah, eliminated by LA

Cavs will probably destroy the Celtics in 4-6 games.

The Celtics have already gone to a 7 game series and it looks like they probably will go to another 7 game series again.

Cavs finished their series in 4 games.

Celtics will be very tired and Cavs will be full power. And without KG, who will anchor the Celtics post defense when Lebron goes inside.

Nuggets are a very rough team and will give Lakers a hard time. They have solid players at every position and with Birdman and Nene camping in the post, anyone trying to score inside will have to work very hard to get those 2 points.

Exactly. Kenyon Martin is no slouch down there either. I've been saying this for quite a while now, Denver can completely take LA out of their game on the inside.

We can still get some great play from Kobe Bryant, and I would expect Trevor Ariza to play well off of him, but outside of those two, you never know what you're going to get out of our perimeter guys.

I know that your perimeter guys are very good but you can't live on 3's and mid-range jump shots the whole series.

Your going to have to go inside sooner or later though so it'll give you guys a hard time.

Great find. The curse will continue hopefully.

Gasol is the guy that would have to step up in an LA/DEN matchup. I think with Nene on Bynum, the Nuggs would have to seriously consider giving Birdman a ton of minutes on Gasol. Kmart is a good defender, but struggles more against 7+ footers than any other type of player.

thats an awesome fact to know. If we can't win it all neither can they lol. It feels good knowing the rockets take everything out of the winning team. San Antonio has that effect on teams beating them too since their second championship in 2003

2003 - Win Finals
2004 - lose to Lakers, Lakers lose to Pistons in finals
2005 - Win Finals
2006 - lose to mavs, mavs lose to Heat in finals
2007 - Win Finals
2008 - lose to Lakers, Lakers lose to Celtics in finals
2009 - lose to mavs, mavs about to lose to nuggets in second round

I agree. The series (if it happens) might come down to how well Pau can deal with Denver's big guys, it should be interesting.

Anyways, its Cavs vs Nuggets.

Probably - the NBA and it's refs have a new love affair with Carmelo. Add in that Billups joined the team, now they have two players who get every single call. The NBA has always wanted to put LeBron versus Carmelo and now they are doing their best to make that happen.

If you think the NBA sets things up then why watch in the first place?

I don't think the NBA is rigged. I do think that the referees make the game easier for superstars. It's not a coincidence that teams with superstars make it far into the playoffs and win titles. Detroit is the only team in the last 20 years to win a title that didn't have at least one superstar. Once you get the reputation as a superstar, you get calls you don't deserve and get away with extra contact at the other end. It's bad for the NBA to have it's stars getting in foul trouble and not be on the court.

You think the NBA wants the Arizona Cardinals or Devil Rays in the Finals? Heck no - the NBA sells itself by it's faces more than it's teams except for Boston and LA which are b-ball elite. In a bad economy, the NBA needs it's stars. Look at the final four this year - LeBron and company, Boston, Kobe and LA and Melo and Billups. When LeBron beats Boston, the Cavs will play Kobe or Melo. Great story lines either way.

One was in the finals with the best in the league and other was in the conference finals with the most dominant center in the last 20+ years.
So essentially this is too small a sample size as it has only been 2 times.

Regarding the Rockets this is a case of 15 or more times.

So with that in mind, now that the Rockets have been officially eliminated, I want to see if this thread continues.

If Odom and Ariza come back and everyone stays healthy, LA has a great chance the next two years. Orlando will probably lose Hedo, Boston is only getting older, the Spurs are getting older and I'll never trust the Nuggets due to their mental makeup. The only team that could really challenge them is Cleveland if they get say Shaq and Sheed. LA has good PG play (for the triangle), Kobe, Ariza and Walton at SF and Gasol, Odom and Bynum in the post. If they stick together and don't get hurt, they're pretty tough. I really wish we could somehow get Steve Blake though. That sounds ********, but he can hit open 3s, he's a pain in the butt on defense (not great, but irritating) and he can pass. I'd really love to see him in LA.

I guess the only team to push them to 7 games this year doesnt stand a chance next year?

Artest will be back, and the Rockets will either have a healthy McGrady or they'll dump that contract and get role players in return. They'll have Yao back and the same solid core of role players they had this year, but they cant challenge the Lakers?

Not to mention Denver. Take your hat off to Denver and Chauncey Billups, even though they ran into a wall of purple brick and gold mortar, they gave us quite a scare. Houston, I dont want to make any excuses for them, but they showed that they can be a really good running team with their second unit and yao on the bench. (I'm just saying)

Spurs may be old, but Mr. Eva Longoria is young. The Texas triangle is still a nightmare for teams to visit (But J-kidd isn't getting them that title now are they?). Clippers might be good with Blake Griffen. *snicker* And who knows whats going on in Phoenix
