Mon May 11, 2009 - Game 4 Denver @ Dallas 9:30 pm EDT TNT (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009051106)

Still grumpy about how Game 3 finished, and groggy from the practically sleepless night that followed, the Dallas Mavericks got together Sunday to watch some film.

Guess what clip coach Rick Carlisle didn’t show?

Hint: It’s one the league isn’t proud of, either.

As much as they don’t want to see the play, it’s one they’ll all remember: Antoine Wright(notes) bumping Carmelo Anthony(notes) in an obvious attempt to draw a foul, then bumping him again, yet failing to get rung up either time at the end of a game during which the officials had no trouble blowing their whistles. Anthony wound up swishing a 3-pointer with 1 second left, taking the Denver Nuggets from two points down to one point ahead and a commanding 3-0 lead in this second-round series.

During the postgame chaos after Saturday's Nuggets-Mavericks game, Dallas owner Mark Cuban had a brief but heated confrontation with Lydia Moore, the mother of Denver's Kenyon Martin, who was seated near the tunnel that leads to the Mavs' locker room.

Cuban said Sunday by e-mail that when he walked off the court, a fan was screaming about the Nuggets being "thugs," so Cuban said to Martin's mother: "That includes your son."

According to Martin's agent, Brian ****, Cuban spotted Moore amid numerous Nuggets fans and said, unprovoked, "Your son is a punk." Regardless of what insult was stated, NBA spokesman Tim Frank said, "The situation on the floor postgame is being reviewed."

Cuban was visibly angry after Game 3 because he believed the officials missed numerous key calls down the stretch, notably the noncall on Denver's Carmelo Anthony, who avoided a potential foul and calmly hit the winning 3-pointer with one second left.

As Cuban stormed out of the tunnel, he spotted Martin's mother in the stands. That's when the sudden and quick interaction took place.

Martin is a perpetually physical player, who committed a hard foul on Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki in Game 1, earning Martin a $25,000 fine from the NBA.

Cuban said by e-mail he knew Martin's mother, because after a previous game that Denver won, she had approached him and made trash-talk-type comments.

Martin is a Dallas native and has been clutch in this postseason for Denver, notably on defense, where coach George Karl praises him as one of the NBA's top overall defenders.

Just Cuban being Cuban. Hope the Nuggets close it out tonight just so I can see the look on Mark Cuban's face. It will be magical.

I wonder how the refs will find a way to stick it to Dallas tonight. After the joke of a Dallas hating crew they ran out in game one, to lead to a 20 FT discrepency, and the call last game, I'm trying to figure out how this one will end.

BlondeBomber41
05-11-2009, 09:03 PM
Yeah the NBA has already ended this series for the Mavs, they might as well just go ahead and disqualify the Mavs before this game starts or something, because there is no point. They screwed them and made a 2-1 series into a 3-0 series, which has never been overcome, and wont this year either.

Young2Kinsler

Kenyon Martin with a few punches to the head of Brandon Bass, nice. Howard just can't keep up, his ankles are too hurt right now, he needs to be on the bench. Also, Terry has been a bust in the playoffs, which is unlike him. Dirk tried his best to carry this team, but this one has been decided in the first quarter already, o well, still wonder what could of been had the right call been made.

Let me just go on the record right now here saying it was totally ****ing stupid for Melo to take that swing (even though I thought Wright should have been T'd up, too, for keeping his arm tied up way too long in a series that has already proven to be volatile). Melo's lucky as hell he didn't make contact, and even though he didn't I won't be surprised if the foul is upgraded to a flagrant 1.

And yes, if he had struck Wright in the face/head, then he would have deserved a one game suspension.

Then 20 seconds later, Howard got his headband ripped off when Martin hit him in the head down the lane. It's so one sided it's not even funny.

That being said, not to say Denver wouldn't of won this series anyways, which they would have, but it's just pathetic to see this kind of officiating in the NBA. It has been so flawed I can't even fathom where to start.

That's the problem. Dallas is trying to play like Denver and play a little physical, but they get called for far more and far worse, so they back off so they won't get ejected or something and then it's all Denvers way. I don't get it. It's completely one sided.

That so was NOT over the back.

And it so was NOT taunting.

You've made the mistake of buying into a conspiracy type notion that "the fix is in" in this series and "the NBA decided" Dallas should lose and "the refs don't want the Mavs to win".

But the truth is there have been a lot of **** calls against Denver in this game, which of course you'll just ignore because it doesn't fit into your nice, neat little framework of how the world is out to get the Dallas Mavericks.

But the cold, hard bottom line of the first half is simply that the Nuggets are playing better defense and better offense than the Mavericks:

DEN DAL
FG% 52.5 45.7
3p% 58.3 00.0
FT% 60.9 84.6

I actually missed the play where his headband came off (wife came in), so I can't compare until I see a replay later.

But J.R. pretty much got tomohawked on the noggin. That call was fair. I still don't agree with the one on Terry, though. And I also still think Wright should also have been T'd up for excessive contact on Melo before Melo took that swing.

Young2Kinsler

I've never once said Denver didn't deserve to win, nor were they not the better team. I'm just disgusted at how this series has been called, and I could be for any team. Get a game stolen from you and then you can talk. Until then STFU, and I say that with no due respect.

Which game was stolen? The one where the Mavs gave it away by missing to FT's at the end of the game when they could've put it away. Or was it the part where Wright just didn't make a good foul. Or maybe when the Dallas coaching staff didn't tell the refs what the plan was. Take your pick, the Mavs should've won the game but it's their own fault that they didn't. They had their chances to put it away and blew them.

Wow, K-Mart received some phantom calls. Oh well, I won't stoop down as to blame the refs, however. The Nuggets were in the driver's seat for 95% of the game and blew their lead with turnovers, bad defense, and just some absolutely amazing shots by Dirk.

The Nuggets can't expect to win by giving up 115+ points. So long as the Nuggets win game 5, I think game 4 was a beneficial game for the Nuggets. It was a wake up call that no matter how superior the Nuggets may be as a team, they cannot stop playing consistent defense.

Anyway, I have to give props to Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard. They made some unbelievable shots. Hopefully, in the Pepsi Center the Nuggets will play with more killer instinct and blow out the Mavs.

One last thing: Why the **** did George Karl give Kleiza so many minutes?? Play Balkman! Or... we just need Chris Anderson back. No more JJ Barea layups.

Because it was still a playoff game, and of course there has to be extra celebration when you can escape a close game with a win and manage to not get ****ed over by a call. Its like winning twice.

I could care less about this series and these 2 teams, but lets be real here. The NBA admitted they blew the call. If that call gets made, Anthony doesn't have an uncontested 3 pointer, and the Mavs most likely don't lose that game, playing percentages anyway. I'm not saying they couldn't have still made a ridiculously clutch buzzer beater, but let them try it with defenders in their face instead of an uncontested shot that shouldn't have been allowed.

I think that they release streamers regardless of what game it is. They released them when Dallas beat SA even though that series wasn't finished. But why is that relevant?

Ok, to answer your question.. it's my opinion that the Rockets were screwed by the officiating in Game 3.

I think some teams even do that during regular season games.

sucks denver couldn't close it out, they had their chances (plenty of chances), didn't make them. sucks for k-mart playing solid D on dirk twice and not getting rewarded, that is what you call a make up call but it doesn't matter Dirk was awesome, he earned this victory.

wrap it up at home hopefully with the bird flying. No bird= more LK which = more

You had THREE players shoot double digit free throw attempts, are you really trying to call out the refs? The Nuggets have shot more FT's than the Mavs in every single game in the series.

You know enough about basketball to understand that pure FTA per game is not a good or accurate measure of how the officiating went. There's a very good reason Denver has gotten more calls overall.

Proof:

PTS IN
FGA FTA FTA/FGA PTS PAINT PAINT PTS/ALL PTS

DEN
G1 73 36 .493 109 58 .532
G2 78 40 .513 117 50 .427
G3 81 40 .494 106 48 .453
G4 79 44 .557 117 36 .308

TOT 311 160 .514 449 192 .428

DAL
G1 82 13 .159 95 30 .316
G2 78 30 .385 105 34 .324
G3 75 49 .653 105 34 .324
G4 79 43 .544 119 42 .353

TOT 314 135 .430 424 140 .330

Everybody knows that players are rewarded for execution. And the truth quite simply is that Dallas has been soft has butter in the paint (and kudos to them for getting more points in the paint than Denver for the first time in this series in Game 4 - unfortunately for you, the Birdman will be back in Game 5 and that won't happen again).

Overall, Denver has 160 ftas to 311 fgas, 51.4%, while Dallas has 135 ftas to 314 fgas, 43.0%. So if you look exclusively at those numbers, Denver has a higher pure total of ftas as well as a higher percentage of ftas/fgas than Dallas. But why is that? Well, take a look at points in the paint. 192 of Denver's total 449 points have been scored in the paint, 42.8%, while 140 of Dallas' 424 points have been scored in the paint, 33.0%. Denver has just been doing a number on Dallas down low, while the Mavs have been largely ineffectual in the painted area.

And the bottom line is that the discrepancy between the Nuggets' and the Mavs' ftas/fgas and paintPTS/totPTS is nearly identical, roughly 10% in each case.

Moreover, it would just be patently false to say that the officiating did not break Dallas' way during the course of both games in Dallas. The only chance in hell that the Mavs have of winning these games is if the refs call every little itsy bitsy ticky tack foul on Denver, taking away the advantage they have with their physicality and athleticism and forcing the game into more of a pure shooting contest in which the defense must back off for fear of the whistle. And that is exactly how both game 3 and game 4 were called the entire duration of the game (a great example is that in game 3, Denver was called for 18 fouls in the 3rd quarter, while Dallas was called for only 3 in the fourth).

So you can complain (and I know, you will continue to do so) all you want about that final whistle in game 3 not being blown, but if it weren't for the dozens and dozens of whistles called on Denver for ticky tack little bumps in tightly officiated games that took the Nuggets out of their usual mode of play, the Mavericks would already be cleaning out their lockers for the summer. So while Mavs fans will probably forever dwell on the "great injustice" that was done to them, they will, I'm sure, also quite conveniently ignore their blessings.
