View Full Version : Which NBA player (or team defense) could best defend LeBron?

Saw someone post, "LeBron would destroy Melo".

Which got me to wondering... who wouldn't LeBron destroy?

DerekRE_3

Gerald Wallace. Yeah....he probably would get destroyed by Lebron too...:sad2: What makes Lebron so deadly is that he is either too strong for a defender or too quick. For example, Ron Artest is strong enough to defend Lebron, but Lebron is just too quick and athletic. Then you take a guy like Gerald Wallace who has the athleticism and quickness, but he just doesn't have the bulk to handle Lebron.

no one. He's either to fast, quick, or strong to stop

Houston would probably have as good a chance as any team with Battier and Artest as the wing defenders. Two solid defenders like them giving him different looks, with Scola and Yao behind them is as close as any team is to being able to defend him I'd imagine.

1 on 1? I'll take my chances with Scal.

Seriously, 1 on 1, I'd go with Dwight.

Not enough speed for Lebron, but has the size and strenght.

The way to go is team defense, force him to shoot jumpers.

someone should ask Ruben Patterson if he can hold LeBron.

Dwight would foul out pretty quickly.

1-on-1 - Kobe
Evidence - 5 for 20 in their last meeting and 9 for 25 the game before that.

He obviously wasn't on him the entire game, but he was on him for 70-80%.

In the two games before that, Cleveland won by 3 and 4, not like the beatdowns they got this year (17 in LA and 10 in CLE). Also, LeBron was held to 28 of 61 which includes 1-8 from 3. I'm not going back three seasons. Things change year to year, muchless after three.

Kobe/Ariza was my other thought. Kobe is a competitive and skilled defender and Ariza would be good relief for Kobe when on the bench. The tandem could do more than most that's for sure.

If Ariza was 20 pounds heavier, he would be able to guard LeBron better than anyone because he's so long and quick. Unfortunately, LeBron can just outmuscle him after a little bit.

no one can stop him, anyways, you can only limit him. Kobe has done a good job on him, though, but our help defense did a lot of work, too, when Lebron got past Kobe.

The reason Lebron torched us before is our defense has never been this good. Lebron struggled this year with our help defense, so he needed his team to play well so the defense would spread. The Lakers are in no way a great defensive team, but I think our defense is designed to prevent from needing double teams to leave anyone open.

Luol Deng because the last time he went against Lebron he held him to 8-28 shooting.

i think if you got a dominant shot blocker in the middle and physical players at SF and G...

orlando has the shot blocker but then you have lewis, alston and hedo who are all soft...

houston doesn't have that dominant shot blocker in the middle but does have tough perimeter defenders...

I would say spurs but their defense seems to be lacking lately...

from the teams left in the playoffs i'd say denver has the best personnel... with dahntey jones and billups as perimiter defenders and andersen as the inside shot blocker... plus you add the physicality of kenyon martin and nene...

the problem is that denver tends to play one on one defense... with little or no help... i dunno if that'll work... however what that does mean is that guys like gibson, mo williams and west aren't nailing 3's... dahntey jones maybe to small to body up lebron...

but the way i see it denver would have the best chance... theoretically... practically the cavs beat the nuggets both times... when lebron having good games... (33-8-10 and 22-11-8)

Lebron vs. 2009 lakers
record = 0-2
averaged 19.5 pts, 8.5 rebs, and 8 assists...
shot .311 FG%, , 3p% .231, points per shot 0.87

lakers dominated the cavs and controlled lebron in both games, the lakers match against the cavs very well, but with lebron playing so well this year, the lakes showed that they were able to control the game to how they wanted it

Houston's D held Lebron to one of his worst games of his professional career. His stat line for that game was:
34 Min
7-21 FG/FGA
2-5 3ptM/3ptA
5-6 FT
0 Oreb
1 Dreb
1 Reb
0 Ast
1 Stls
2 Blks
3 TO
21 Pts

That was pretty impressive

The previous 5 meetings included the Lakers throwing out Walton, Vlade, etc. on Lebron. Kobe was too heavily depended upon for offense so Jackson tried to give him as much rest as possible. As many Laker fans know, this year was a big deal when Kobe and Jackson decided Kobe would finally guard Lebron man on man. Lebron was then held to 9 of 25 shooting and 5 of 20 shooting.

Orlando or Houston. You really can't stop him but if he can't drive to the basket as much, his game becomes less dominating.
He is such a beast, he used to be overhyped now he's somewhat underrated. That'll drastically change after he wins a ring.

shane battier and ron artest did a fine job on lebron here in houston. if i remember correctly ron also played him pretty tough in cleveland. you cant just defend lebron with one guy, you need great team defense and more than 1 good perimeter defender to take turns on him and hope he tires or misses shots. and yao may not be much of a shot blocker but try to shoot over something that can reach up to around 9 1/2 feet in front of a goal... not as easy as you may think. the old addage holds true, 'you cant stop him, you can only hope to contain him'

Team Defense can stop anyone. As far as Lebron its the same way a team stops a d wade. Clog the lane to draw charges so hes forced to shoot shots. Good rotations and help D can get it done. With that said from what i've seen im going with rockets. Excellent team defense and rotations. There good one on one defenders ( Shane and Ron) help a lot too. Now this doesnt mean they beat the cavs cause lebron does have help.

I think a healthy (maybe younger) San Antonio Spurs maybe able to "slow" him down.

Nobody can cover Lebron. There's guys that can slow him down like Artest, Deng, Gerald Wallace, and Pierce but he's always going to get his 20 plus points a game no matter if all 4 of those dudes are on him.

Where was that effort in Cleveland earlier in the year when the Rockets got beaten easily?

The moral of the story: no one can consistently stop him.

Houston Rockets has the ability to really force him away from the goal which is really the only way to shut down Lebron.

Apparently my comments led to a conversation that got out of hand... my bad. As to the main topic, despite not being a big fan, I would say that Tyrus Thomas does a very good job of defending LeBron. He does have the size to match him physically and is quick in his own right.

DreamShaker

For a 7 game series....nobody really....same with Kobe...the Rockets threw everything they had at him for game 1...and Kobe still had like 32?? You can't stop an offensive force like Wade, Lebron, or Kobe for 7 games. Just gotta focus on making things difficult and getting them frustrated and out of sync...

Doesn't mean much. The Lakers dominated the Rockets also in the regular season...but in the postseason you guys will have to earn everything against Houston seeing how they convincingly won game 1. If you guys stay as complacent there is no way you guys are gonna beat Cleveland in a seven game series, even with such a talented group of players. The Houston series will be a great opportunity for the Lakers to grow some backbone.

ONE on ONE - nobody

but TEAM DEFENCE - Lakers and Rockets...

(considered - Nuggets, Hawks, Celtics)

Rockets cause they have two great defenders to defend Lebron 48 min, plus they have good big-man in the center...

Lakers - cause there is a guy named Kobe, but one on one? nope... he needs his team with athletic guy like Ariza and they Bigs to do that...

The Rockets tandem of Battier and Artest would prob get the job done more often than anyone in the league.

Kobe did a good job the two times they have met this year.
