Game 5 Wed. April 29, New Orleans @ Denver, 10:30 pm EDT TNT (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009042907)

DENVER (AP)—Take it from the man who just won the NBA’s Sportsmanship Award, the Denver Nuggets’ historic dismantling of the New Orleans Hornets left more than just the losers red-faced.

“In a strange sort of way, being up by that much is kind of embarrassing for the team that’s up sometimes,” Billups’ said Tuesday, 12 hours after the Nuggets’ 121-63 shellacking of the Hornets. “Only because, you play the game with integrity and you don’t want to show anybody up. But at the same time you want to play hard and you want to compete.

“It was an embarrassing thing to go through, but I thought the guys were very professional and just kept playing. There wasn’t no (trash) talk or rubbing it in. It was just playing hard.”

Denver’s 58-point win matched the most lopsided victory in NBA playoff history, the Minneapolis Lakers’ 133-75 blowout of the St. Louis Hawks in 1956.

I actually hope this isn't a blowout. I'd be happy with a solid win with NOH giving their best effort. It'd be better in getting mentally prepared for the next series.

Yeah, it'd be nice for the Nuggets to get a better warmup prepping for the next round. But......I think they win by at least 12-15 points. N.O. is done, and I'm sure will come out playing hard. But the Hornets have done nothing to prove they can play for 48 minutes with a continous effort, which is what it would take.

I find myself before each of these games thinking, "Now we'll see what the Nuggets are really made of", and worrying that they'll slip back into some of their old bad habits. On the surface, this should be an easy victory for Denver, but I feel it could also be somewhat of a trap game. Too often in this and previous Nuggets seasons they have let down their guard when they thought they had an easy path, playing down to lesser opponents, coasting on big leads and letting the other team back into it, just relaxing mentally and losing their energy and focus. I hope to see them sustaining the kind of intensity they've shown thus far for the full 48 minutes of this game. Nuggets fans have been waiting for this for a long. long time. I hope the team will keep taking pride in their defense and close this series out in the Pepsi Center.

I see this game three ways.

1) The Hornets have given up and are already defeated. Whispers are they've quit on Byron Scott. Chandler is gimpy, Peja is a shell of his old self, James Posey was a waste of money, and they have no bench. This game, will be the exact opposite, it will be an *** whooping, not a game, because New Orleans has already given up.

2) The Nuggets, thinking they've got the series in the bag, take their foot off the throat of the Hornets, and are shocked when the Hornets actually try to win the game, and furiously scramble to come back in the second half and fall just short.

3) A mix of one and two. The Hornets come out and play inspired ball to begin with, but the Nuggets with Chauncey at the helm, have not let up, and while the Hornets play hard, just still aren't good enough of a team to take the game, and lose the game by 7-12 point range.

Granted I'm taking the easy road by giving 3 scenario's for what could happen, but it's just hard to know what exactly the psyche of this Hornet's team is and how they'll respond. To be honest, none of the 3 would totally shock me. My guess is that the 3rd scenario I laid out is most likely.

Still, I get the feeling that the Nuggets are toying with them just a little bit, not quite giving it all they've got. I hope they will come out in the second half with more focus. Too much sloppy play - flubbed rebounds they should have held onto, really bad passes and turnovers, poor shot selection. Gotta sharpen up.

Okay, I'm biased, but let me put this question out to non-Nuggets fans:

Does Melo not look like a player with a new sense of seriousness, and purpose, and a new maturity and awareness? I'd point to the play he just made with just over 1:00 left on the clock where he was facing up against West. Last year he'd have put his head down and driven that right into West's chest. This time, he pulled back, kicked it out to Billups, got a better spot with West an extra step off him, and got the pass back and drove it in from much better positioning. I've seen so many examples of this kind of thing in this series, where I've been thinking, "If it was last year, he wouldn't have done that..."

to melo's defense I think having A.I. there slowed melo's development. I also think being part of the olympics and getting a true point helped. He seems to be playing a lot smarter basketball and willing to share the ball more.
