The Cavaliers’ run to the NBA’s best record brought Cleveland the highest local regular-season TV ratings for any NBA team in more than a decade. Paced by the Cavs’ 116 percent increase from last year, leaguewide viewership across all regional sports networks increased by 8 percent this season. Half the 26 RSNs monitored saw their ratings rise during the regular season.

But the biggest success story came from LeBron James and his Cleveland teammates, who set a regular-season ratings record for Fox Sports Ohio with an 8.76 rating/134,000 homes. The Cavs posted the highest rating number since the Chicago Bulls averaged an 8.9 rating in Chicago for the 1997-98 season, Michael Jordan’s final season with that club.

Even more stunning is the fact that an average of 134,000 Cleveland-area homes tuned in for each Cavs game, second only to the Lakers’ 250,000 average on Fox Sports West. Cleveland is the country’s 17th-largest TV market.

Jordan won SIX CHAMPIONSHIPS, and Kobe has won THREE; they deserved all of that attention. Jordan NEVER got the kind of attention LeBron got before he started winning titles. Neither did Kobe.

I am NOT taking anything away from James; he is a phenomenal player, but all of the love for him is just sickening. Let's see him actually win something before we even put him in MJ's stratosphere...

Nobody is putting him "there". They are drooling over him because he is an incredible player, probably the best all around talent in the game right now. It's what ESPN and those networks do. I cant believe people havent just accepted that by now. It's the same way they go gah gah over the Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, and Cowboys.

What does Cavs fans tuning into their team more than ever have to do with the media's thoughts on leBron and the Cavs?

really?? How old are you, just curious, don't mean anything by it. I was 11 when MJ came into the league, and me, and every single kid out there worshipped him, outside maybe LA or Boston. Now, there weren't as many people then, the major networks were the only ones that carried games, and not as many people had cable, etc, so the shares may have not been the same, but just as many were interested.
I love it how people blow up James like he is overhyped. Um, the dude was known since he was 14. He came into the league, and dominated right away. Quit hating on the fact that he not only has liven up to the hype, but has exceeded it. Do you really think that if Kobe wouldn't have whined his way out of Charlotte, and gone to LA, he would have won anything as a youngster? So pointing out that he has no rings is stupid. Nobody gets rings that early unless they luck out and go to a team that is already almost right there.
This is not directed at you dude, so don't take it that way. I just get sick of the whining about how he is overhyped, but then I see thread after thread about Bynum, Kobe, Wade, blah, blah, blah. Everybody loved and worshipped MJ because not only was he an insane athlete and basketball player but he had class. I wasnt even a bulls fan but I loved watching them because Jordan was the greatest, and showed intensity from the second he stepped out on the court to the second the game ended. You never would have seen Michael Jordan walk out on a court doing pretend photo shoots and dancing in the middle of games. People watch the Cavs cause the media chooses to put them on TV all the time. Theres a lot of people that do not like LeBron and think he's classless.

LeBron...classless...? Are you joking? Wow.

Jordan was 10x the jerk you think LeBron is. If anything, he's too nice. Jordan had a killer instinct and he tried to instill it in his teammates. He yelled and screamed at them when they effed up, Garnett style, and it paid off. LeBron is the exact opposite. He leads by example and by charisma.

If you think some pregame fun "photo shoots" and posing with his best friends and teammates (that team is so close, they are like family) then you need to seriously re-evaluate your opinion of the game.

BTW Jordan didn't do fun stuff like that not because he was a "nice classy person!" but because he was all business and all winning. LeBron will never be Jordan and Jordan will never be LeBron. They are two separate personalities and players and both will go down as two of the greatest of all time (with Mike still being the greatest)

They may be extremely corny, lame, or whatever, but certainly not classless. There's no showing up another team involved, no trash talking, nothing obscene or dirty . . .

Seriously, those are no more classless than chest bumps and high fives -- they're just a lot dumber-looking.

agreed. And you are also talking about a generation that wasn't paid like gods, and were role models, and humble people. They didn't go out shooting guns, or chasing fans, or have tatoos from head to toe, or get covered media wise for every single thing they did, and for sure didn't get involved in a rape trial. LeBron is a great role model. He has never been in trouble. He has always contributed to the community. He has gone beyond the hype and pressure most could never deal with. I get it. Kobe fans don't want to acknowledge that the man knocking him off his perch is the next big thing the in NBA. But the fact is, LeBron is the most talented player to ever enter the NBA, and only injury or misfortune is going to stop him from becoming the best player of all time. He will win some rings, it is only a matter of time and you know it regardless of whether you hate him or love him.

Oh. God. Yes.

Jordan was way more hyped, marketed, promoted, etc. during his career than LeBron has been to this point.

Sure, say that Jordan won 6 titles, that LeBron has only been around six years, etc. -- that's all well and good. But let's not start saying dumb things like "LeBron is more hyped than Jordan."

When Lebron starts selling fast food, underwear, and deodorant, maybe we can talk. When LeBron stars in a feature film, we can definitely talk. Until then, LeBron's hype doesn't even sniff Jordan's.

what does selling a product and hype have to do with one another...hype is annointing a 17 year old who's never played in the nba the king...mj was unknown when he was 17. i suppose wade is hugely hyped too because he's in every other commercial i see...hype and commercials have nothing to do with each other.

what does selling a product and hype have to do with one another...hype is annointing a 17 year old who's never played in the nba the king...mj was unknown when he was 17. i suppose wade is hugely hyped too because he's in every other commercial i see...hype and commercials have nothing to do with each other.

lebron has been hyped much more than jordan ever was...jordan didn't even begin getting hyped until he avg'd 37ppg in the nba...i believe that was earned...lebrons was not

Apparently we have different definitions of "hype".

Exactly. Im not trying to bash LeBron. Just because I dont like the guy doesnt mean I dont think he's a great player cause he is. The media was hyping Lebron, showing him on ESPN, and throwing all this endorsement money at him before he ever set foot on an NBA court. The media did not start covering Jordan and the Bulls constantly until Pippen came along and they started winning championships. Jordan earned all the media coverage he got. LeBron has won nothing yet to deserve the constant media attention. I just believe the Cavs ratings are so high because of all the 24/7 attention them and Lebron get from the media. For now, that's my opinion.

LeBron is officially en route to becoming the most marketable star since "the Legend"....

Everyone has to take notice of this guy....love 'em or hate 'em, he is one of the most compelling players to watch night in and night out!

Kobe is still the best player, and all the Fans who fell for the BS that the media fed them will come to realize that the NBA players, Gm's, and Coaches were right all along!

Lebron better win a ring this year, or this season will be one big bust.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if he actually earns it. I don't want to see him shoot 40 freethrows in a game. However, I think the nba knows the Lakers will beat them in the finals, so they are giving him mvp instead. The nba likes to distribute to their fans so they are sure to come back.

FANS hate him...just like they hate Lebron. The media does not hate Kobe.

:laugh2: Not true muh man. Scoop Jackson has even written an article about how fellow writers in the media have told him that they hate Kobe (which they explained was the reason for placing Kobe fourth in MVP voting in 2006). The media hates him as well.

and when has LeBron allegedly raped a girl and

Key Word: allegedly.

The rape was proven to be false. Move on from it. He ****ed a white chick doggystyle. He cheated. It's bad. blah blah blah.

thrown ultimately every teammate he's had under the bus...until he became the leader (on a succesful team)...

He threw every teammate under the bus? He never did that...Never. Please inform me of when Kobe went out and personally threw his teammate under the bus. If I'm not mistaken, not only has he not done that, but has protected the likes of Kwame Brown when he was booed and ridiculed at a Lakers home game.

kobe's never been the media darling because he's an arrogant #@#@...

And Lebron isn't? The same Lebron who proclaimed himself as the best athlete he watched when he was young? The same LBJ who proclaimed that kids shouldn't buy Stephon Marbury's shoes because they weren't expensive enough (they are not over a 100 bucks so they are not good, right?), completely ignoring the great deed Stephon did by helping poor kids from poor neighborhoods being able to buy great shoes at a very affordable price?

but then again he could do no wrong in your eyes now could he?

:laugh2: Sure buddy. Funny how my friends beg to differ. They think I'm too hard on Kobe.

but i thought cleveland was such a small market and lebron would never get anyone to tune in,thats why he's going to ny:rolleyes:

It is a small market. Ratings share means little when you're comparing different markets. So Cleveland has highest rating since the '98 Bulls, means little since Chicago was bringing in ~5x as many people.

If LeBron could pull a 8.76 share in New York he'd be reaching ~650,000 homes every game instead of the 134,000 this year. You really think that wouldn't make a difference in marketing?

your exaggerating my point.the point is,that people act like in cleveland he cant pull anyone in..but there's a mountain of evidence to suggest that he can

Well I don't know who's said that he can't pull anyone, I'm sure they're exaggerating.

It's just that he could pull a whole lot more people in New York. And since LeBron's talked about wanting to make so much money one has to consider it. Though I think they'd have to put together a team that doesn't suck before they can get him.

Wasn't it his favorite athlete?

I don't understand what LeBron's arrogance, media biases, Kobe Bryant, or any of that **** have to do with this topic. The Cavaliers draw a lot of viewers in Cleveland -- great. LeBron's a great player, the Cavs are a great team, Cleveland's starved for a championship, and a local player is leading the charge. It's really not that surprising. ESPN and the media loving on LeBron have NOTHING to do with it. Cleveland would be watching these games regardless.

Some of the posters on here really, really stretch to turn every LeBron/Cavaliers thread into something about LeBron's arrogance or media biases or something. Can't some topics just remain innocuous?

Yes, it was his "favorite". One of his favorites.

If I were him I'd have been one of my favorite athletes to. That guy is a freak athlete in every sense of the word.

Just to clarify... this article is not saying that LeBron and the Cavs have the highest ratings in nationally televised games. That belongs to the Lakers.

The article only mentions the Cavs have the highest ratings across all RSN's "Regional Sports Networks." You know the local Fox Sports channels, and the likes. So in laymen terms (seeing as we have so many on here,) FOX SPORTS OHIO posted the highest viewership ratings per number of homes in Ohio, as compared to Fox Sports West, Fox Sports Detroit, etc. Once again, this does NOT reflect which team brings the NBA its highest ratings on their NATIONALLY televised games, because that belongs to the LA LAKERS.

Then you're one arrogant SOB as well. Many athletes have been asked that and they don't even think to put themselves in (except for Lebron James and Luke Walton). Heck, how does that even cross your mind? Someone asks you your favorite people to watch when you're young and you say yourself? What a dumbass...

You're a well documented Lebron and Cavs hater, and you're entitled to your opinion, but people dont need to read your posts to know what your thoughts on any subject relating to Lebron will be.

Please. Spare us the trouble.

Hey, look, Kobe asked for a trade. What a dumbass.

WOW doesn't it ever occur to you guys that LeBron is entertaining to watch which is why they have the highest ratings right now? Cause I can damn sure guarantee nobody tuned into the 97 Bulls to watch Toni Kukoc or Horse Grant. They wanted to see Jordan same goes for LeBron hes entertaining to watch so why wouldn't people tune in. Damn people on this board are some of the biggest haters I've ever seen.

im pretty sure nobody tuned in to watch "horse" grant considering he wasnt even on the bulls anymore.

+1.

RSN

Doesn't make sense everyone on here is complaining about hyping when this entire thread was about RSN ratings.

They're mainly due to the fact that the Cavaliers have done so well this year, and people from Ohio are watching. It's pretty simple, really.

So you're saying Luke Walton is an, and I quote, "arrogant SOB"? :eyebrow:

You're complaining about everyone hyping him, and holding it against him?
Maybe he should have just underachieved out of HS and made everyone happy.

I mean really, the only reason you even gave for thinking he's classless is his pretend photo shoots and mid-game fun?

Baseball players do stupid rituals all the time, handshakes, pies-in-faces, and other weird stuff.

Heck, football players do touchdown celebrations, and people aren't complaining about them like the stupid pregame photo shoot nonsense the Cavs do.
