Game 3 - Sat. April 25, Denver @ New Orleans, 1 p.m., ESPN (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009042503)

NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Denver coach George Karl widened his eyes and grinned as if he couldn’t believe the question.

He’s been hearing for several years now that his Nuggets couldn’t win without scoring a ton of points, and suddenly people wanted to know why his club had been so effective in slowing down Hornets All-Star point guard Chris Paul.

“Our offensive-minded team that doesn’t play defense?” Karl asked.

Karl can afford to be in a joking mood. The Nuggets have a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series with the Hornets, having won each of the first two games by double digits heading into Saturday afternoon’s Game 3 in New Orleans.

In all seriousness, though, Denver does indeed love defense now, Karl insists.

“I think we’ve shown some people we’re pretty good defensively,” Karl said. “I tell the guys all the time, win games with defensive plays.”

This is the Hornets' last chance to get back in the series. Too early of a gametime though.

I said the same about game 2, and it didn't happen, but I expect the Hornets to come out more focused and intense in this game than we've seen them yet in this series.

But I also think the Nuggets can withstand their strongest assault at this point. Denver is just simply the better team. I wouldn't have said so going into the series (and I still might not be saying so if Chandler was 100%), but there are just too many factors that New Orleans can't answer for: The Nuggets have a much better bench, tighter defense, a wider range and greater number of offensive weapons, more athleticism and toughness... we haven't consistently been so all season, but we have become a complete team.

What just happened in the forums was crazy, the mods handled it well it was hilarious for me ans a select few. About this game, we win we still got a shot we lose we done.

Must win for New Orleans...Chris Paul is bound for a huge game. As good as Denver has been playing...I don't believe they can prevent one all-NBA monster performance by Paul at least once this series. They have to withstand it.

Two things:

1. Everybody interested in watching this game, please be aware of the early game time. I have a feeling this will be kind of rough not only on the players of both teams, but the fans as well (especially the ones there in New Orleans, where their big Jazz Festival is going on... look for lots of stragglers getting to the arena well after the game has started  ).

2. Here are my thoughts on how the Nuggets need to approach this game (http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9213578&postcount=487), as posted in the Nugs forum.

Just read this on the Nugs blog RMC (http://www.roundballminingcompany.com/2009/04/25/2009-nba-playoffs-round-1-game-3-denver-nuggets-at-new-orleans-hornets-game-thread/):

Heading into this postseason there have been 85 instances of a team taking a 3-0 lead in a seven game series. Those teams have won 85 times. Only nine of those 85 games have made it to game six and only three of those teams won game six to force game seven.

So unless they were to do something historically unprecedented, I think it's safe to say you're probably right.

New Orleans has reached the low point of the season. This is a must win. I don't think they will win to be honest with you. Denver is just to strong of a team for New Orleans to handle.

It's back to the Hornets home, and a W is needed to make sure they won't be down 3-0 to the Nuggets. I don't think there is a team that came back from a 3-0 deficit.

No team ever has. Teams have been down 3-0, 85 times, and no one has ever come back.

Paul just drove to the basket, Birdman fouled him from behind and blocked the shot but he blocked it hard enough so that it hit the backboard and went in. awesome.

:laugh2:

At least Smitty didn't fake an injury.

But I'm liking this rough and tumble playoff basketball in the West, even if my Nugs are losing. If this series continues in this vein, we'll win for sure. We out-physical this team by a pretty long ways.

We're getting back into some bad habits right now, though. Settling for jumpers. Got to drive into the paint, get to the line.

I think this has probably been the best officiated series actually.

Though, after seen a few replays of that Chauncey flagrant, IMO, if that had been butler fouling chauncey like that, I betcha it would have been a flagrant 2.

We lost, but it was a fun one. 3 flagrants, at least 2 or 3 Ts, bigtime playoff basketball for real.

Still, despite the loss, I think the Nuggets own this series. No way the Hornets can match up to this physical, banging play for 7 games.

Was on ESPN. Melo had a good game, but missed the potential game winner, and had a shot at that half courter, almost made it. Great game. New Orleans has life. Was dissapointed in the Nuggets performance after the first 8 minutes or so. Jumped out to a great start, and then just let up. New Orleans showed resiliancy though, even with David West sucking it up.

Damn, that sucks for Denver. Bad break.

Actually, in a way I'm kind of glad. Which is not to say that I don't wish we would have won. But I think it's good for strengthening the focus and mentality of the players that they now can't afford to feel like they can coast through the postseason easily. That this rubs their noses right up into it that they'll need to work their ***es off if they want to keep going.

Biggest problem Denver had in this game was after going up like 22-6 or something, kicking back and thinking they already had the series in the bag. We'll take round one, but it's good to get this lesson earlier rather than later, if it's a lesson the players needed (and they obviously did).

Nuggets in 6. Or 5.

But likewise, all credit to NOH for the win. I thought what we saw tonight we were gonna see in game 2. CP3 being his usual bad self. Bad as in great, that is. It must have been ****ing great for them to get back home. Huge win for them, and it's a real series now. Congrats, Hornets
