"I'm going to need surgery. For me, basketball is over. I cried so much about it when I was laying on the floor."

-- Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo, who injured his knee in Houston's loss to Portland. He is second on the NBA's career blocks list with 3,289.

Thanks for the memories Deke...good luck in the future. I hope you'll continue to finger wag the injustice that roams your homeland.

Its funny evertime I saw him on the court I was like "dang, he still plays?" Now seeing him get hurt and be done, its kind of sad. I'd rather see him come back play one more game and retire so he can go out the right way

A great guy, gave more to charity than most sports stars would consider. One of the best defenders of our generation. Really sad to see him go out this way, he deserved better.

I saw when he went down, holding his knee, and I thought to myself, oh man he looks like Bynum when he went down, then I knew he was done. I felt bad for him, who cares if he is 42, I would love him to have him on my team....he can still flat out play. Even though it looks like his career is over, I hope he can still make a comeback, and retire the right way.

From the Toronto paper:

Saddest sight last night?

Dikembe Mutombo writhing in pain on the Rose Garden floor.

Quite aside from the fact he doesnít think heís ever committed a personal foul in his life, Mutombo was one of the all-time great players and arguably the most significant philanthropist in all of professional sports history.

I donít think he was ever considering playing again next season so to suggest the injury ended his career is a stretch but if there was ever a guy who deserved a long and loud ovation as he left a court for the last time, itís Deke.

That he wonít get it saddens me a bit.

I was never really a Deke fan until he signed with the Rockets. When he plays for your hometown team you get to see what he does off the court and you see what type of person he really is.

Sad his career ends like this, and I think it's gonna hurt the Rockets more than people realize.

Its not THAT sad, the guy is very lucky to have had such a long career, the fact that hes avoided any kind of knee problem is a blessing, Deke played till he couldnt anymore, thats about as great of an ending as you can have. Guys who have their knees taken away from them in their prime, now THAT is sad.

Wanted him to retire as a Nugget, but it wasn't to be. Maybe he can continue to bring the joy of basketball to more places in Africa. I do agree that an ovation would've been more fitting way to go.
