Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard will be named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Howard is expected to be presented with the award at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. At 23 years and 128 days, he is the youngest player ever to be named defense player of the year, according to the report.

Howard, who said in training camp that he wanted to lead the NBA in blocked shots, reached that goal with 2.92 blocks and 13.8 rebounds per game.

The Magic trail their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Philadelphia 76ers, 1-0. Game 2 is Wednesday in Orlando.

Howard, who posted career playoff highs of 31 points and 16 rebounds in the Game 1 loss, was inadvertently scratched in the eyes by Sixers center Samuel Dalembert late in the third quarter. Howard said Monday he was going to get his eyes examined because he was "seeing just a whole bunch of crazy stuff" when he closed them and felt a "pulsating" sensation when they were open.

But he's not expected to miss any game time and even joked, "I used to be a boxer back in my former life, so I was used to those punches."

You make a thread about DH12 winning DPOY and you put a picture of him dunking the ball. Wouldnt it have made sense to put a pic of him blocking a shot or something? :D

i agree but its more to it then that. his FT% suck ala shaq so late in games people gon hack a shaq'em, and we dont have a closer like shaq had in penny, kobe and wade to take the defenses eyes off dwight.
we just need a star 20ppg scorer and we'll have the league by the short n curlys. cant wait till 2010 Free agency

Well deserved. But, I hope, the next game your teammates give you the ball more often ... so you can be an equal offense to defense force.

Howard, LeBron and Wade are going to be included in the NBA All Defensive First Team.

Don't get me wrong Lebron has stepped up his defense tremendously, but Heat fans know how Wade has won games by himself on the defensive side, like the block on Stuckey, the buzzer beating block to win the game on Foye, the clutch back-to-back blocks on Gasol & Odom, etc. They're giving too much credit to LeBron.

Howard definitely deserved the award, he was phenomenal all season. He led the league in both rebounding and block shots, which is rare to lead the league in both categories.

LeBron won games on his defense as well, they just were won by the 3rd quarter sometimes. Wade gambles and loses alot more than Bron does, atleast in the passing lanes.

While he could use some OFFENSIVE improvement, this is a DEFENSIVE award. There is nobody even close to being a decided 2nd in DPOY this year, and it doesn't matter because DH ran away with it.

Dwight is overrated defensively. Quite a few players played better defensively this season. This is a cosmetic award though so the big name plus the blocked shots made him a lock.

Chronz
04-21-2009, 05:48 PM
My response to those reasoning that Dwight doesnt deserve is to point out that Orlando finished with the top ranked defense over the course of a regular season, how did they accomplish this without Dwight and playing him with a bunch of perimeter players? Surely his blocks and rebounding domination account for ALOT in his case, its not like Camby leading a barely top 10 defense in his DPOY campaign, Dwights team is legit.

Not surprise. He pretty much locked it up once he started leading the league in blocks. I think D. Wade should have deserved it though.

With KG and Duncan missing significant time this year has been a pretty bad year for DPOY candidates. Dwight really isn't a great defender, but there's nobody that deserves it more.

so i guuess mutombo, ben wallace(4yrs ago) and every other big who won it is overrated too, homie's the only defender/rebounder on a team over shooter AND HE HAS NO FREAKING HELP, everyone else had help to win it, wallace had a team of guys that played D, same as mutombo.

stop hating he's the only center in the world people fear ,
