Game 1 - Sat. April 18, Houston @ Portland, 10:30 p.m., ESPN (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009041822)

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—It will be up to Houston’s physical tandem of Ron Artest and Shane Battier to stop Brandon Roy, Portland’s top scorer and team leader heading into the upstart Trail Blazers’ first playoff appearance since the 2002-03 season.

Bring them on, Roy says.

“I think that just like they’re getting excited about shutting me down, I’m getting excited about not letting them to,” he said.

Roy, a two-time All-Star, has been steadily grabbing the league’s attention since his debut in 2006-07, when he was named Rookie of the Year.

He is averaging 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game this season. He’s had 55 games with 20 or more points, and 12 with 30 or more.

The 24-year-old’s steadiness, however, may be his greatest contribution to the Blazers. If he’s not hitting his shots, he’s able to get the ball to a teammate who is. If Portland falls behind, he redefines the team’s focus.

I blame this all on the T-Wolves. They traded Roy for Foye.
Seriously, I see this game as a close game in the first half, and in the middle of the 3rd Artest and Battier shut down Roy. Yao takes over in the 4th, and Rockets win 93-88

Pretty badass, Brandon.

I think those comments can come back and haunt him.

Because if he is going to focus on not getting shut down by 2 lock down defenders instead playing team ball then Portland is in big trouble, but Roy usually doesn't play that way. Who knows the Playoff emotions might get the best of him remember it's his 1st playoff game of his career.

All in all I think Portland needs a big game from B-Roy to win, while the rockets need to slow down Roy in order to win.

neither shane or ron have come out and said they are going to 'shut down roy' for the most part they know he's a unique talent, and collectively they hope to contain him. roy's comments can actually provide fuel for shane and ron to play him even tougher. is greg oden going to play tonite? i think yao comes out and sets the tone for the series, roy may get his points, but he wont shoot a great %, the pg's for both teams cancel each other out, scola and landry do what they can against aldridge, and the bench for both teams play as expected. ROX by 2 90-88

Who would of thought this would have been a blow out. Fact is defense wins championships. I didn't really cared who won but was kinda routing for Portland because Houston is so boring to watch. Either way, Blazers better come up with a better game plan to get easier shots rather than settling for jumpers all night.

the Blazers should be ashamed of themselves. Their fans deserve a lot better than this. Those fans are unbeleivable. They literally never lost hope. They were still cheering in a 20 pt game trying to will their team.

it's not his fault...he has to play against a combo of Artest and Battier. Even Kobe and Lebron struggled against Artest and Battier. Correct me if I'm wrong but Lebron had one of the worse game he ever played against Artest and Battier.

i'm sure he'll play well in at least one game during this series but he won't be able to play well on a consistent basis against Artest and Battier. No wing player can. Only Jordan himself can break down Artest and Battier on a consistent basis.

Well Artest didn't exactly shut down Roy today bcause Roy was able to drive to the basket easily off the pick-and-roll in the 1st half.

true but what's Roy's FG% average against the Rockets? 'nuff said. it's nothing to be ashame though...Roy isn't the only all-star wing player to struggle against Battier and Artest. Lebron had one of his worst game he ever played against Artest and Battier.

I wasn't able to watch the game but really wow. Yao did set the tone early. I think it would be better to use Frye or Lamarcus against Yao because Yao seems to have trouble dealing with quick pesky defenders being able to front him preventing him to get the ball.

PennyMy#1
04-19-2009, 08:54 AM
Good numbers of 4 of the Rockets-starters. Roy can't beat them alone. A little 15 point help of Oden is not enough. Guys like Aldridge need to setp up now ... But, it was just game 1, so everything is still open ...

It was a beatdown from the start. Roy actually did well, he didn't shoot well but he was getting his teammates involved. Too bad they didn't step up, Aldridge and Frye didn't play all that well. Roy attacked the basket and played with a lot of heart. But, really Rockets were the better defensive and more experienced team. Rockets played Roy really well, credit to Artest and Battier. Their defensive rotations were great, bench stepped up. Great win on the road.

i didnt expect the final score to be so lopsided. the rockets defense relegated everyone but roy into jumpshooters and i dont think that is their strength with all the size they have on the front line. we received incredible production from players who a) were not playing (dikembe) b) had been struggling as of late (aaron brooks). pryzbilla's comments i think fired yao up because i havent seen him this focused since the dwight howard game and all the critics then. our 3 pointers were going in also and all the stars aligned for us i guess. i dont expect this to be the norm, but if we can continue to spread the floor and let AB pick apart the defense i think all rockets fans will be fine with the outcome.
