View Full Version : Interesting Stat: Mavs 1 of Only 5 Teams to Win 50 Games, 9 Consecutive Years

The Mavericks are 1 of only 5 teams to win 50 games in 9 consecutive years. This is their current streak.

The other four teams to accomplish this streak are the current Spurs (10), the 80's Lakers (12), the 80's Celtics (9), and the 60's Celtics (10).

The other four squads all have one thing in common--they have won multiple titles. The Spurs winning 4, the 80's Lakers winning 5, the 80's Celtics winning 3, and Russel's Celtics winning 11.

The Mavs, in their great run, have not won a single championship. Not one.

Discuss.

I remember creating a thread on this a little bit ago as well. In fact the Mavs when they won 67 games was only the 2nd team ever who won 65+ games that didn't win the title.

The other team that lost was the 1973 Celtics who were 68-14.

Teams that have won 65+ games and results.

1967 Sixers
1971 Bucks
1972 Lakers
1983 Sixers
1986 Celtics
1987 Lakers
1992 Bulls
1996 Bulls
1997 Bulls
2000 Lakers
2008 Celtics

Those are the teams that won it all

These are the teams that didn't

1973 Celtics
2007 Mavs

Yet to be determined

2009 Cavs
2009 Lakers

the Mavericks are officially the Philadelphia Eagles of the NBA

Thats quite an accomplishment. However, the fact they have no championships to show for it kind of makes it less significant.

the Mavericks are officially the Philadelphia Eagles of the NBAGood comparison if we're talking just the last 9-10 years. I believe the Eagles have won the superbowl a while back, but not sure. Anyway, the Eagles do compete each year and made it to the NFC championship game 3 times, losing each, until the 4th year in a row they made it to the Superbowl with T.O. - and lost to the Pats. Not exactly alike, but similar.

Discuss. The Spurs won the title 4 of those 9 years didn't they? The Lakers won 3 I think and then you have the Heat which beat the Mavs and then the Celtics last year. I may be wrong on those Champions but it's not like they were up against scrubs. Utah went almost every year with Stockton/Malone but just couldn't beat the best teams out there. No shame although the Miami series was a debacle and Avery Johnson should have been fired after that year.

I would compare them to the Seattle Seahawks.

Detroit won a title during that stretch too. Math looks right for the others but numbers aren't adding. Maybe one of the Spurs or Lakers titles were prior to their streak?

Spurs Championship number 1 may have been pre streak. They won in the strike year and I think Duncan was a rookie or second year player. I think thats it, scratch the 1st Spurs Championship.

Spurs first championship came pre-streak, but that was because of the strike year. It was the same team with the same core though so I just put all the championships that they won (same with Russels Celtics, won 11 but the streak was 10).

I just can't imagine having won 50+ games for 9 consecutive years and not winning it all once.

I remember when the NBA pretty much feared the Mavericks. They'd come into Boston and whoop my Celtics every year. They even started a year 14-0 after beating the C's in Boston. Dirk destroyed us. Some of those teams were so good, especially the 67 win team. It's mind blowing that they never won a championship.

it brings such good memories

Nowitzki once remarked that he sings the tune Looking For Freedom by David Hasselhoff to relax before taking free throws. The song was a big hit in Germany when Nowitzki was a youth. During the 2006 NBA finals, a Miami radio station handed out papers with Hasselhoff's face to the fans sitting behind the baskets for Nowitzki. In addition, Miami fans chanted "David Hasselhoff" when Nowitzki visited the free throw line in an attempt to distract his concentration.

Nice Tags.
The only reason I see this happening is because for nine straight years they have no legitimate inside presence. I've been supporting the Mavericks for a long time now and I've watched almost every game they played.
I can always see them leading after three quarters then in the fourth a slashing guard always kills them. This is because there is no one manning the middle that is intimidating. All the talent they have goes to waste because of this.
This is so gut-wrenching and heart-breaking to me. :(

It just seems strange that a team could be that good for soo long and never have won it all.

It is all because of Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lakers haven't even played the Mavs in a playoff series this whole time that the Mavs have won 50+ games.

This was their worst 50 win season, they had an expected win/loss record of 47 games. 3 games isnt much of a difference but its below 50 games.

Just shows how competitive the league is.
And if I'm not mistaken, the Spurs ran their streak right along side the Mavs.
They had their chance in '06, but outside of that, the Spurs have been the 'Michael Jordan' to a lot of teams, including the Mavs this decade.

Now that the Mavs have revamped, does anybody think they can escape being the only team to not accomplishment the championship feat while being one of the most consistent regular season teams of all time?

They should have one, but the refs made sure that it didn't happen. Its a ****in shame.
