Tuesday, April 14 Turner Field | 7:00 PM ET

Chris Volstad, RHP (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=458690) (1-0, 1.80) Marlins (5-1) @ Javier Vazquez, RHP (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=134320) (0-0, 4.50) Braves (5-1)

Marlins: During the series finale against the Nationals on Wednesday, Volstad's only troubles came in the first inning. That's when the 22-year-old right-hander gave up two runs -- one earned -- while throwing 27 pitches and getting behind five of the seven batters he faced. The rest of the way, however, Volstad looked as dominant as he did in the second half of last season. The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., native went on to throw four no-hit frames thereafter while striking out seven batters -- a career-high -- and throwing 65 pitches. Volstad grew up a big Braves fan, and last season he went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against Atlanta.

Braves: Javier Vazquez limited the Phillies to three runs in six innings during a successful season debut that was ruined when his bullpen squandered a seven-run, seventh-inning lead on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander enjoyed a stellar March that was highlighted on March 14, when he limited Team USA to one run in five innings of a World Baseball Classic game. Vazquez, who was obtained in a December trade with the White Sox, has gone 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 11 starts at Turner Field. He hasn't faced the Marlins since 2005.

Wednesday, April 15 Turner Field | 7:00 PM ET

Andrew Miller, LHP (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=453192) (0-0, 3.86) Marlins (5-1) @ Derek Lowe, RHP (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=117955) (1-0, 0.82) Braves (5-1)

Scouting Report:

http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_453192.jpg

Marlins: Coming into his fourth season in the Major Leagues, Miller, the Marlins' No. 5 starter, will be making his first start of the year against the Braves. Last season, the 6-foot-7 23-year-old went 6-10 with a 5.87 ERA in 29 games -- 20 starts. Miller started the season in Florida's rotation, going 5-9 with a 5.63 ERA before landing on the 15-day disabled list with patella tendinitis in his right knee on July 18. After posting a 2.33 ERA in six rehab games, he was reinstated from his DL stint in September and finished off the season in the bullpen, giving up seven runs in 6 2/3 innings. The Gainesville, Fla., native is 2-0 with a miniscule 0.69 ERA in four career games against the Braves.

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_117955.jpg

Braves: Lowe opened the season by limiting the Phillies to two baserunners in eight innings. While not as dominant, he still proved to be impressive when he recorded six strikeouts and allowed the Nationals just one run in a three-inning effort that was halted because of a lengthy rain delay on Friday. He is 4-3 with a 4.59 ERA in eight career starts against the Marlins. During his only outing against them last year, he allowed six runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in five innings.

Thursday, April 16 Turner Field | 12:00 PM ET

Anibal Sanchez, RHP (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=434671) (0-0, 0.00) Marlins (5-1) @ Kenshin Kawakami, RHP (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=499877) (1-0, 4.50) Braves (5-1)

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_434671.jpgvshttp://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_499877.jpg

Scouting Report:

http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_434671.jpg

Marlins: Making his first start of the season, Sanchez was solid against the Mets on Friday, pitching five scoreless innings against a team he hadn't faced since 2007. The 25-year-old, who gave up four hits and three walks while striking out five, pitched out of trouble in his last two innings of work. In the fourth, he started with runners on first and second but got three straight outs. Then, in the fifth, Sanchez struck out Carlos Delgado with two men on base to end the inning and preserve a two-run lead. In his previous three years in the big leagues, Sanchez is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in four starts against the Braves.

Braves: Kawakami pitched around some early jitters and won his first Major League start while recording eight strikeouts and limiting the Nationals to three runs in six innings on Saturday night. Armed with an average fastball, the 33-year-old right-hander relies heavily on a slow curveball that proved to be effective during his successful 13-year career in Japan's Central League.

I think this is going to be a great series as the NL east might be shaping up to be the best division in baseball.

No way any division is better than the AL East. AL Central's up there too. I'd put the NL East as the third-best division in baseball.

Are you kidding the AL Central???? Phillie, Mets, Braves, and the Marlins could win in a series agianst all of the teams in the AL Central.

Hot-starting Braves, Marlins face off
Atlanta (5-1) vs. Florida (5-1), Tues., 7:00 p.m. ET

Long before the Marlins began this season with four consecutive wins, Chipper Jones considered them to be a definite contender in the National League East. Now that he's had an opportunity to see them take one turn through their young and talented rotation, he's gained further reason to believe they will continue to make noise throughout the season in the division race.
The general consensus entering the season was that the Phillies and Mets would lead the way in the NL East. But the Braves have created an early buzz, and the Marlins have shown enough to make Jones go as far to say they should currently be considered the favorites.

"Through the first week of the season, I'd call them the front-runners," Jones said. "We all know that they can swing the bats. They've got guys down there who can hit anything you throw up there. But they've also got some big horses, power arms that are really good. We're going to get a steady dose of that this week."

It's far too early to place too much emphasis on a series. But while currently sitting in first-place tie in the NL East standings, Atlanta and Florida will be looking forward to the opportunity to test themselves against each other in a three-game series that begins on Tuesday night at Turner Field.

"We've got a tough team coming in, the Marlins, who have been playing hot, and they're pitching is lights out," Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur said. "As a hitting team, we have a big test ahead of us."

Weighing in the Braves' favor is the fact that they won't be facing Florida's top two pitchers, Josh Johnson or Ricky Nolasco. But that doesn't diminish the fact that they could still certainly encounter formidable challenges from Chris Volstad, Andrew Miller and Anibal Sanchez.

With Phillies ace Cole Hamels ailing and the Mets still possessing uncertainty about each of their starters not named Johan Santana, it could easily argued that the Marlins and Braves possess the division's best rotations.

While moving to the top of the division standings through their first six games, the Braves have seen their starting pitchers post a 2.65 ERA and limit opponents to a .195 (24-for-123) batting average. None of the Atlanta starters have surrendered more than three earned runs in a game.

This early success has validated the optimism the Braves gained after reconstructing their rotation with the offseason additions of Derek Lowe, Javier Vazquez and Kenshin Kawakami. Each of these three right-handers are scheduled to pitch during this week's series against the Marlins.

Vazquez will take the mound on Tuesday night to oppose Volstad, who produced quality starts in both of his outings against the Braves last year.

"Johnson is developing into an ace, and Nolasco and Volstad are great," Francoeur said. "But we've got some good guys going against them, too. I don't know that there will be as much offense as there was during our first two series. But we should see a lot of good pitching."

Pitching matchup

ATL: RHP Javier Vazquez (0-0, 4.50 ERA)
Vazquez limited the Phillies to three runs in six innings during a successful season debut that was ruined when his bullpen squandered a seven-run seventh-inning lead on Wednesday.

FLA: RHP Chris Volstad (1-0, 1.80 ERA)
During the series finale against the Nationals on Wednesday, Volstad's only troubles came in the first inning. That's when the 22-year-old right-hander gave up two runs -- one earned -- throwing 27 pitches and getting behind five of the seven batters he faced. The rest of the way, however, Volstad looked as dominant as he did in the second half of last season. Volstad grew up a big Braves fan, and last season he went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against Atlanta.

Tidbits
Braves backup catcher David Ross will begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Class A Rome on Tuesday night. Ross, who has been sidelined since March 31 with a strained right groin, is expected to be activated in time to play Thursday's series finale against the Marlins. ... The Braves won six of the nine games that they played against the Marlins in Atlanta last year. ... Before recording a fifth-inning single against Scott Olsen on Sunday, Brian McCann was hitless in 11 at-bats against left-handed pitchers. braves.com

What a series we have here folks, we get to face imo the best rotation in the east, so quality pitching througout the series. Their offense is as formiddable as the best of them and their speed is fantastic, if they make it a habit of getting on base consistently throughout the series, we are going to be in trouble. We can't afford to walk as many guys like we did against the nats and the pen can't afford a screw up. the offense and starters got to do their thing, series wins guys lets focus on those.

The Marlins I feel are potentialy the best team in the East. They have a great rotation and I am sure many may try to overlook them. I feel this series will be a true test of the Braves.

Further I feel the NL East is easily one of the most fun divisions to watch in all of baseball. I feel it could be a 4 way fight to the wire. Just my opinion of course.

talk about throwing javy into the pit, first game agaisnt the world champs philly at philly and now takes on the potent young marlin team. a great test for him off the back.

I realize that garrett hasn't played in the entire nats series (did pinch hit), and there is news that he can return to the lineup on tuesday. However, one problem with that is Diaz absolutely rakes marlin pitching, any type of pitching the marlins have diaz rakes it. might want to keep him in the lineup for this series.

Hopefully we can take advantage of missing Nolasco and Johnson, not that it gets much easier. I think this will be a real test of both our offense and defense. I'm pulling for Vaz to quiet his detractors and Diaz should be a no brainer, we'll just have to wait and see.

well i dont think the marlins have by far the best rotation...maybe they have the best projected rotations but please...volstad hasn't pitch an entire season yet...nolasco its good but last year was the only one good in his carrer he needs to prove himself this year and johnson is a beast but he have problems staying healthy...and after those three miller and sanchez are homers...

Talent does not equal production. Sure they have talent, but so does Scott Olsen. The Marlins aren't winning due to their rotation; if they weren't scoring huge amounts of runs every game they wouldn't be 5-1. Their pitching is good, young, and inexperienced. Let's see if they can give 30 starts apiece and still do okay.

Actually, they are definitely winning due to their rotation. Johnson has only given up one earned run in two starts, Sanchez didn't give up any in his first game, and Volstad only gave up one.

My mistake, I thought their starters had given up most of their runs but it appears the 'pen did. But I still believe their success relies upon their offense because I just don't see all those young pitchers delivering consistently week after week, especially without a veteran presence to help them along. I mean, the oldest starter is Nolasco at 26. Will these pitchers be able to fight out of jams while at the same time not getting calls and in turn getting frustrated? I don't know, but I doubt it. We'll see.

Eh, well it's not like these guys are rookies. Don't forget that Johnson and Nolasco both pitched a solid amount of innings in 2006 and 2008 and Sanchez did so in '06. The bullpen is very questionable, but the composure of these young starters really is something else. Johnson reminds me a lot of Beckett/Clemens out on the mound in terms of his confidence level. Sanchez definitely has an aura about him, too.

Don't get me wrong I love the talent absolutely love the talent you guys have but..Josh Johnson for example only pitched 100+ innings once in his career and that was in 2006, so it's natural to say that he is a question mark to stay healthy. Same thing goes for anibal, most starts he made was 17 that was his rookie year, I don't know if you guys plan on using miller as a starter or not but he is the same case, nolasco you can have some comfort with, volstad you have to think the same.

Excellent talent and skill you possess in the rotation, but one can help but question their durability/effectiveness throughout the season. I am not trying to bash or anything.

For all its worth this thread is about THIS series... with this being said here is how i see it. The Marlins are in fact sending youngsters out there but who cares if they havent pitched 30 G...this is their second start for each one of them and at least for this series their long term durability doesnt matter...

Its far to early to think the Marlins' starters will or wont have what it takes to go a full season..heck its to early to rule out KK having a bad season, JJ enduring a Sophomore slump or that Vazquez is going to get back on track.

With that said for this series i will give the Braves the edge... We have our 2 best pitchers going while the Marlins wont. Braves are swinging hot bats and are staying home while the Marlins will face their first Away games of the season...

It will be a hell of a series, that im sure will live up to its early calling...

It will be a hell of a series, that im sure will live up to its early calling...It doesn't kill anyone to have a discussion about the durability of their pitchers later on. Granted this is the present and focus would most likely be on the present, but with young pitchers the question can be asked. Nobody is stating that that is what is going to be their downfall in this series, just harmless discussion.

I'm sure not banking on the pitchers youth to be a weakness in this series. Going to be a good series.

My guess would they prolly based it on us playing the Phillies the first series by the lil qoute next to the ranking. But all it is, is a ranking.
