I think there are certain cases, but, When you are a basketball player, talking to another average player, do you call him by his first or last name. Im not talking about stars like Kobe Bryant or Melo with nicknames, Nobody is going to call him Bryant, they call him Kobe, same with Melo, but, in most casses, do you call a player by thier first name or last name

ex.

Chris or Bosh
Derrick or Rose
Ben or Gordon
Josh or Howard
Pau or Gasol
Gilbert or Arenas
Mike or Bibby
Joe or Johnson

Did you call your friends by their last name or first name?

Did you call people in your school by their first name or last name?

Answer those questions and you'll answer your question.

I usually only call people by their last names if it's something cool.

Pretty much this, and I'm sure it's no different in the NBA.

Dunno who's name would qualify though.

it depends, in training or in games i call my teammates with the fastest things i can think of, usually i just yell bron or z. when giving an interview, i have enough time to think about their lat names and might use em, when im calling em i just say their first names, like whats up ben.

Not really because sometimes in halftime/post game interviews you hear players talking about their teamates and they call em by their last name.

I call the superstars by their first names or by nicknames, like "Kobe", "LeBron", "D-Wade", "D12" or "CP3"

How I refer to the guys on my own team:
Yao Ming - Yao
Ron Artest - Ron, Ron-ron, Ronny
Shane Battier - Shane
Aaron Brooks - AB, Aaron
Luis Scola - Luis or Scola
Carl Landry - Carl
Von Wafer - Von, Vonster
Kyle Lowry - Lowry (Kyle sounds awkward to me for some reason or another)
Chuck Hayes - Chucky, Chuck-wagon, Chuck
Dikembe Mutombo - Deke
Joey Dorsey - Joey
Brent Barry - Brent or Barry
James White - White
Tracy McGrady - McLady, She-Mac, McGrady, Ms. Grady
Brian Cook - I never really need to refer to him, I guess 'Cheerleader' would suffice.
