View Full Version : Hypothetical expansion draft.

If they had an expansion draft and this time, for no reason at all, you could only protect 4 players from your team. Who would it be and why?

Interesting answers so far....for the Rockets....

Yao- Obviously the best player on the team now since T-Mac has been microfractured and just a purely negative energy this season.

Shane Battier- Just the glue that holds the team together. Without him the Rockets just suck.

Ron Artest- Best defender and best inside wing scorer we have. He is a force when he's on.

Luis Scola- Has been a dream come true at a position we have been weak at since Barkley retired.

shouldn't you be able to protect more than four? Anyway for the Knicks it's pretty easy: Nate, Lee, Gallo, Chandler

He's had his struggles, but I think Roy has performed soooo much better over the last few months. I think it is a toss up between Rush/Dunleavy to be honest.

no dj agustin?...

I'll take Felton over him right now. He's still just 24, and has really improved under Larry Brown. Augustin right now is mostly a shooter, while Felton is really good at getting into the lane, leading the break, and finishing inside. His defense is also a lot better than Augustin's. Augustin is barely 5'11, and has trouble defending other pg's.

Bogut
Redd
Sessions
Mbah A Moute

I'd like to see more of Jefferson and Redd together because I think they're a really good 1-2 combo, but we only got about 20 games of them actually starting together. LRMAM over Villanueva because he's a really good, scrappy defender and can play multiple positions and I think CV is playing so well because it's a contract year for him. I don't doubt that he'll be an outstanding player wherever he plays, but just like the Mo Williams situation, we don't need more shooters.

I agree that the Blazers four should be Roy, Aldridge, Oden and Batum. The top three are obvious but the fourth is a toss up between Rudy, Batum and Bayless.

While Rudy is more talented than Batum, Batum has an excellent ceiling and is the perfect compliment to those other three starters. If it actually were an expansion draft, I would keep Rudy and hope that Batum wasn't selected, but since Rudy is positionally blocked and Batum's ceiling is so high, I would probably keep Batum.

Derrick Rose because he's our future franchise player.

John Salmons because he's our best all-around guard.
Tyrus Thomas because he's the best player on our team in help D and the most athletic on the team.

Danny Granger, Mike Dunleavy, Roy Hibbert, TJ Ford...

Pacers

Murphy, Granger, Dunleavy, and Hibbert, hes going to be a beast in a few years.

I think you let Dunleavy be exposed, he's probably going to be out for at least half of next season and makes $20M over the next two years. An expansion team wouldn't risk taking him and inflating their payroll unless they hired Dunleavy Sr. to run the team.

Granger is obvious, as is Hibbert. Roy isn't going to be an all-star, but he will be solid and leans toward being a good offensive post player and an above average defender.

My third is Brandon Rush. With starter minutes and responsibilities he'll be fine, he's a shooter and shooters need touches to get into rhythm, plus he's relatively cheap on his rookie contract.

#4 is a toss up, but I'd probably protect Troy Murphy. Yes, he can't play D, but he rebounds on a team seriously devoid of rebounders, shoots the 3 from PF, and is custom tailored to the system the Pacers run. Plus if Hibbert develops into a good post player then Murphy compliments him perfectly.

People I wouldn't protect:
TJ Ford: Assuming he takes his player option he has $17M over the next two years. Jarret Jack does many of the same things and is 3" taller. Ford is faster but Jack plays better D. Both are in actuality undersized SG's rather than PG's. If you leave them both unprotected, the expansion team will probably take one of them, and your PG issues are solved.

Jarret Jack: see above.

Mike Dunleavy: see above.

Marquis Daniels: Good defender, creative scorer around the basket, can't shoot the 3 to save his life. One of two things is going to happen with him. He's a free agent and either the Pacers are going to let him walk, or he's going to sign a 3yr+ contract. If he leaves they wouldn't protect him, and if he signs a contract then he'll cost too much for the expansion team to take him.

Jeff Foster: 2yrs, $13M. I don't think an expansion will spend that on a backup.

No one else on the team is worth saving over anyone mentioned above.

Kind of the same thing I was thinking. TT and Noah are starting to turn the corner and are showing they are getting it. I think an expansion team would definitely take Deng, Hinrich in a second to have 2 spots filled. This is a hard question for hte Bulls because we have a solid 8-man rotation.
