Yeah, as much as I was worried about the outfield. The whole group has been very productive including Frenchy whom I will admit I doubted. They will have some really tough choices to make. So many people and only so many spots available. I am excited about the production we may get this year from this group. Last year was pathetic.

Side note: JJ against Santana tomorrow.

yeah I have guarded optimism. The tricky thing about spring is you have to really look at a players first 2 at bats instead of all at bats...especially early in the spring. Towards the end of the game, players are usually facing minor league prospects so if they're getting hits off them and not the starters, they're really not showing they can hit MLB pitching. There has been many many times this spring already where ATL has been shutdown by the starter and then he's pulled and ATL takes over. I think it's because our prospects are superior. Like i said, I just have guarded optimism on all the success they're having right now.

Also, I don't think Schafer is ready. If he's going to be a leadoff hitter, he must learn to cut down on his strikeouts. If he's not going to be a leadoff hitter, then fine, but to me a leadoff hitter should be judged more by his on base percentge rather than average.

Its hard not to be overly excited about our spring. We have not shown a weak spot in any area. Offense has been anchor chain strong and defense nothing but stellar. I sure hope this translates into the kind of season that we deserve after last years long list of disappointments.

I agree Schafer needs further training. Not much.. but he does. He will have his time to shine.. and I think he will.

I don't think however the first two at bats are the legit way of judging talent, as even the Major League players are still working on things. I think it takes a keen eye, and a strong judge of players instinct. It can be the difference in a team that often destroys its talent vrs promotes the proper talent.

I still like O'Flaherty very much. I watched the game on MLB Network on the 18th, and his stuff looked as good as advertised. I see what you're saying BK, but while this one outing may cost him his spot on the team just because of the sheer numbers game and the crunch of making decisions in ST, I really don't think it diminishes the lefty's long-term prospects in any way. I still think he'll turn out to be--at minimum--a respectable LOOGY.

I'll admit it: Francoeur is starting to impress even me. Mixing in some extra base hits now, it's really quite refreshing to see. I am eager to see him perform once the regular season starts; perhaps we'll have a very interesting trade chip on our hands come the end of the season (whether that's Frenchy or one of the young OFs who would be blocked if Francoeur breaks out).

jmtapia
03-22-2009, 11:40 PM
I dont see any reason to trade Frenchy next off season. With Schafer coming up he could man CF. Heyward could take LF and Frenchy RF until Gorkys is ready to take LF and then we could see if we want to move Schafer or Frenchy. At this point lets hope that he could get near a .800 OPS mark before we could add any value to him.

I said specifically that Francoeur isn't necessarily the trade chip. But between Hernandez, Francoeur, Schafer and Hernandez, someone is gonna have to go. Being financially minded, I tend to think the more expensive Frenchy would be the optimal one to trade, but certainly one of the others could make an attractive bargaining piece.

or they could not pan out and more of a reason to hold onto Frenchy...
