The title says it all. What games are likely upsets in the first round?

USC is actually favored over BC. Which way would be the upset?

Not sure.

Arizona is favored over Utah too I believe...and that seems to be popular upset pick.

A "true" upset is one that nobody sees......5/12's are very trendy.....

I think Portland State can knock of Xavier. They beat Gonzaga on the road and almost beat Washington. Second year in a row in the dance.....plus Xavier has been underwhelming.

I hope there is an upset that nobody sees coming....always makes it fun.

It seems like people pick upsets these days just to pick them. I see no way this many happen and the bracket is pretty striaght forward this year. Like the past 3 years arizona has been a low seed and the trendy upset and they always seem to disapoint. the big conference shcools that are low seeds are low seeds for a reason....because they are bad. i dont like the 12-5 upset unless the 12 is a top school from a small conference. They are 12 seeds because it is unkown how they will do against big time schools because they dont play them in the regular season.

Everyone is picking WKU over Illinois too. I doubt WKU does the upset 2 years in a row

And WKU over Illinois and Gonzaga.

I really don't get the Miss. St. upsets I've been seeing. They played in the worst "power" conference this season (SEC) and wouldn't have even made the tournament without winning the conference tourney.

Plus Purdue is better and just as hot recently. Can't see them losing to an inferior team that doesn't even belong here. If Purdue were struggling right before the tournament then it'd make sense, but they're one of the hottest teams in the field.

VCU to the sweet 16.
That's another trendy pick.

I'm not sold on VCU beating a team like UCLA in Round 1 and like Wrigs said, I hope it doesn't happen either b/c I have Nova in the Final Four in a lot of my brackets.

I've got VCU beating UCLA who has to come across country.

Villanova is playing at home. They should not be losing this weekend.

Really, it's March Madness. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to what a team did prior to the tournament. Obviously Miss. St is pretty hot, if they won their conference.

Purdue is a pretty hit and miss team, it'll be interesting, and I wouldn't be suprised if UNI knocks off Purdue before Miss. St gets a chance too.

I know anything can (and will) happen. But if you're using "they're hot" as an argument then I don't see how they'll beat Purdue. They're as hot as any team in this tournament, they dominated the Big Ten tourney and Robbie Hummel is healthy. They could be a very, very dangerous team. I have them beating UConn.

I disagree with WKU and Illinois. I've watched Illinois. They have a tendency to be offensively challenged. Plus, what kind of impact will Chester Frazier have in this game?

It hurts them not having Frazier, but even with him in the lineup they've lost 3 of their last 5. They're just a very inconsistent team. They can blow out Missouri or score only 30 something against Penn State. Frazier's impact on this team is being a tad overrated too.

Well Miss. St. is out. They came back down to earth once they played outside of the crappy SEC.

I just didn't understand anyone picking them to win 1 or 2 games. They wouldn't have even sniffed the tournament without lucking into the SEC tourney championship.

Washington didn't really impress me. It was the perfect upset pick, and I would do it again.

IMO, it's pretty much a wash. Both did very well in underachieving conferences.

Here is the problem when people ask about 1st round "upsets:"

IMO, there are only 4 times in round 1 that you can say that something is an upset: A #16 defeats a #1 (Never happened); a #15 beats a #2 (happened only 4 times in NCAA Tournament history); a #14 beats a #3 (happens, but not a huge amount); and, a #13 defeats a #4 (Does happen, but not a common thing). When you see these happen, you are like, "WOW!!!!"

After that, everything else is not an upset. A #12 beating a #5 is so common that when people fill out their brackets, that is one of the first things they look for; "I wonder which #12 will beat #5 this year?" Was anyone shocked at all that Western Kentucky beat Illinois and will anyone be shocked at all if #12 Arizona beats #5 Utah?

#11 versus #6, #10 versus #7, and #8 versus #9 are so evenly matched that very few people would be shocked at all if #11 beat #6 in every first round matchup, #10 beat #7 in every first round matchup, and #9 beat #8 in every first round matchup.

Every year, someone wants to look for a Cinderella and there were points yesterday where it might have looked like it would come to fruition (Northridge leading Memphis, American leading by 10 over Villanova at the half, Akron leading Gonzaga). But in the end, the cream of the crop always rises to the top!!
