Hey guys can someone please explain to me why everyone always say 65 teams? I thought 16 times four region is 64 ...which I dont really get why they say its 65. It's just been bugging me for a while. Thanks

There's a play in game before the "real" tournament begins for the 64th spot.

the thing i wanna know is why the play in game always includes no name schools. Why don't teams like stanford or some bigger name teams play in it?

Its because in like 2000 the ncaa made another division with like an odd number of teams so to make it fair they had to take the same amount of teams for each division which made it 65. There will be a game between two low ranked teams to decide the 64th spot which basically means a first round exit. Hope that clears things up a bit

Because you don't have a play-in game with two teams that already deserve to be in the tournament.

The play-in game is so garbage schools know how it feels to "win" an NCAA tournament game. My alma mater FAMU has played in 2 play-in games. They won the 1st one in blowout fashion and it felt great. Then they got slaughtered by a #1 seed.
