Stern: Budget Cuts Could Make NBA Games Less Obnoxious

NEW YORK--With a prolonged recession wreaking havoc on ticket sales, NBA commissioner David Stern indicated that several teams are considering budget cutbacks in the form of scaled-down in-game entertainment, which could make NBA games “less obnoxious.” Stern said the cuts would be temporary and that games would return to their normal level of obnoxiousness once the economy has recovered.

“There are some teams that are going to be scaling back the level of garishness during home games,” Stern told the New York Times. “That means you may see fewer bells and whistles, explosions, dancing bears, blaring music, strobe lights, pyrotechnics, and general obnoxiousness, and a return to plain old basketball. This probably sounds frightening to our fans, but don’t worry: once the economy recovers, we will go back to bashing you over the head with inane ********.”

Stern admitted that toning down the theatrics would risk alienating a key demographic of NBA fans: people who don’t like basketball.

While it's a satirical article, I still found it relevant, as I too think most of the theatrics and other entertainment at NBA games is obnoxious.
