View Full Version : Battle for the 8th seed in the East. Who gets in? CHI, MIL, NJN, CHA, IND, NYK

JordansBulls
03-11-2009, 10:20 AM
Here are the latest standings. There are roughly 15-18 games left for each team to play in the season. Who will get that last spot in the East more than likely? I believe the first 7 teams will make the playoffs regardless in the east, but one of them could slip into the 8th spot. However of the teams that are close to the 8th spot now, who will make the postseason?

The Bulls improved their team by getting Salmons and Miller. They beat Houston last week, took Miami to two OT's...They're playing well and their April schedule is Cake. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Bulls go on a five or six game winning streak in the last month. It's certainly Chicago's to lose, but they won't, they'll make the 8 seed.

I say the Bulls yes i am bias. What i have seen over last three games says that even though the Bulls have the tougher schedule none of the teams trailing them won. after these next two games if the Bulls win just one it could almost wrap up the eighth seed.

Probably Bulls or Bobcats. Bobcats are the hottest team in the group. Indiana & Milwaukee have some serious injuries to overcome. Nets have not been great at home. Knicks blew some opportunities with losses to the Bobcats & Nets.

It will be fun to watch.

Oh, I've been watching, and they are playing excellent bball since acquiring Bell and Diaw. Coach Brown is finally getting that team to gel. I watched them play the Spurs bucket for bucket untill SA stepped on the gas and blew them out in the 4th. Chicago is currently sitting where? In the 8th spot, so therefore it's theirs to lose. :D

If they get a 4 game cushion it might be won. But After the Rockets, the Cats play:

Wolves
Raps
Kings
Raps
Pacers
Wizards
76ers
Knicks

After that they have 4 straight against Lakers, Boston, Heat, Pistons. They do have one game against Chicago in the final week. It'll be a fun ride.

Bulls don't need another draft pick. We are set at PG (Rose), SG (Salmons) and SF (Deng). We just need Rose to develop and we need a big man like Bosh or Amare or even Boozer and then we are legit contenders.

ima say the bobcats. they look like they have a pretty good team now, and they have a pretty easy schedule the rest of the season as well. I think the Bulls also have a chance, cuz tho i think they suck and are very incosistent, after they play LA, the rest of their season is a joke. If they dont make the playoffs, you know they suck. So all in all, i think it depends on which team chokes.

knicks want to build a winning environment, exp is invaluable for the players
besides if none of the superstar's in 2010's teams could make the playoffs without them, it's kind of a greater incentive when you know you'll be joining a team that has already proven it can make playoffs WITHOUT a superstar

Whoever gets 8th seed hasn't sniffed the playoffs in years, or ever in the case of the bobcats. They don't know what it takes, how hard you really have to play, to win in the playoffs. Getting spanked by Boston or Cleveland will only make the #8 seed focus on what they need to do next year, to be better. Look at Atlanta last year, versus this year.

Don't be surprised if the Sixers fall out of the playoffs, and I keep thinking that is likely to happen.

The Bulls would have been in a much better position if they had structured their offense around Ben Gordon. They would have been at least like the 4th, 5th or 6th seed team. Its really that simple. Being that they have brought in Salmons, they have a lot of depth but not everyone gets to play the way they would want to play and that may create problems with team chemistry. I am thinking that could be a reason why they may not make the playoffs, but if they keep Ben Gordon happy, this team can do serious damage.

If its not the Bulls making it, it has to be either the Bobcats or the Knicks. Had the Bobcats never made the Jason Richardson trade, they would have never been in the running. As for the Knicks, the Larry Hughes trade has certainly made a difference on the positive side.

The Nets are doing well and they are another strong possibility. Its all up to Devin Harris though.

Yea, that was a good win. Also, the Celtics are without KG for that game apparently, so we can possibly pull a win against them too. Then we play OKC and could win that game. So, if we win the next 2 games against Bos and OKC, we will be in good shape.

i think all the teams for 8th seed like;

PACERS DONT GOTTA CHANCE NO MORE!

Bobcats, Bulls, Bucks, Nets, Knicks all are going to have the same record at the end, and is going to be determined by season series. There all going to end up with the record 36-46. I looked at all the schedules, and i think thas going to be the final result. I looked at all the season series between them, and man is this interesting, check this out.

If it says beat it means they beat them in season series.
If it says loss it means they loss them in a season series.

Nets: Have to play every1 once more.

Bobcats: Beat Bulls, Loss to Bucks, have to play @NJ, and home against NY.

Bulls: Beat Bucks, Loss to Bobcats, have to play home against NJ & NY.

Bucks: Beat Bobcats & Knicks, Loss to Bulls, have to play @ NJ.

Knicks: Beat no-one, Loss to Bucks, have to play @CHA, @CHI, and home against NJ.

Yep. But I doubt we are interested unless we can get rid of Deng's contract.

If the Knicks can play good, smart ball they have a hell of a shot of grabbing the 8th seed. GO NEW YORK!

(8) Milwaukee (31-38)
Games remaining: 13 (7 Home, 6 Away)
vs. +.500: 8 vs. Div: 1

(9) Chicago (30-37)
Games remaining: 15 (10 Home, 5 Away)
vs. +.500: 6 vs. Div: 4
(10) NY Knicks (28-38)

(11) New Jersey (28-38)

vs. +.500: 10 vs. Div: 4
(12) Charlotte (28-38)
Games remaining: 16 (7 Home, 9 Away)
vs. +.500: 7 vs. Div: 3

Two-Team Tiebreaker
1. Better record in head-to-head games
2. Higher winning percentage within division (if teams are in the same division)
3. Higher winning percentage in conference games
4. Higher winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference
5. Higher winning percentage against playoff teams in opposite conference
6. Higher point differential between points scored and points allowed

Three-Team Tiebreaker
1. Best head-to-head winning percentage among all teams tied
2. Highest winning percentage within division (if teams are in the same division)
3. Highest winning percentage in conference games
4. Highest winning percentage against playoff teams in own conference
5. Highest point differential between points scored and points allowed

The Bulls are in the best shape as they have twice as many home games (10) as road games (5) and they hold the tiebreaker over Milwaukee.

I think NJ is done now with the injury of Devin Harris. They have a hard part of their schedule coming up, so if Devin misses around a week or so, it is over for them. Indiana is done and have never really been considered a contender to get the 8th spot.

So that leaves CHI, MIL, CHA, NYK in the running IMO. Milwaukee is done, I think they will start losing the upcoming games and fall out of the chase. I think it will come down to NYK, CHI, CHA for the 8th and final spot.

I agree MIL has a better shot because everytime I expect them to lose, they pull off a surprising win. I counted them out months ago after their injuries. Having a 1 game cushion doesn't hurt either.

CHA has an incredibly light upcoming schedule. Their next 5 are vs TOR, SAC, @TOR, IND, @WAS. They can easily go 4-1 or 5-0 and be ahead in the standings going into the final stretch.

I think Bulls have the best chance, followed by Bobcats

Bulls have 10 home games remaining and only 5 away. And i think like 3 of their away games are against teams they should be able to beat

Bobcats have a crazy easy schedule in their next 5, but in late may/april their schedule gets tougher

Knicks need to pick up a lot of wins to get into the 8th spot

As a Cavs fan the only two I dont want to see win the 8th seed is Chicago or Indiana. Think both could cause problems for them but thats to the point of maybe taking them to a 6 or 7 game seres. All the other teams I can see the Cavs sweeping or winning in 5.

Bulls always play the Cavs tough and Indiana has had some great wins against the top teams in the NBA this year...one against the Cavs.

Chicago poses the most matchup problems for Cleveland especially now that we got Miller and Salmons.

The Nets lost to the Cavs today and the Pistons lost to the Magic today thus making the Bulls only 2.5 games back of 7th in the East. And the Bulls/Pistons play Tuesday in Chicago, so that could be only a 1 game lead for Detroit if Chicago wins tomorrow in Washington.

Gotta think the Bulls wll take it down at this point. Though it's not like they've been rock steady consistent all year, they could easily lose 5 in a row or win 5 in a row, its still very much up in the air, but right now the bulls are favorites.

I think the Bulls have it pretty much secured, the only thing is that the Pistons should now be added to the mix because the Bulls are only 1 game behind them for the 7th seed. I hope they don't make it this year and Charlotte does.

We have a 2 game lead over the 9th seeded team right now, and then we are a game back from the 7th seed. 7 of our last 10 are at home. Also the 7th seed is Detroit and they have 12 games left with 5 at home. Meanwhile the 9th seed Charlotte has 4 home games with 8 road games.

In fact we only have 2 games against teams .500 or above while Detroit has 5 games and Charlotte has 6.

Here is our schedule

Thu, Mar 26 Miami 8:00 PM TNT
Sat, Mar 28 Indiana 2:00 PM
Sun, Mar 29 @ Toronto 3:30 PM
Tue, Mar 31 @ Indiana 7:00 PM
APRIL OPPONENT TIME (ET) TV
Sat, Apr 4 New Jersey 2:00 PM WGN
Tue, Apr 7 NY Knicks 8:30 PM
Thu, Apr 9 Philadelphia 8:00 PM TNT
Sat, Apr 11 Charlotte 8:30 PM WGN
Mon, Apr 13 @ Detroit 7:30 PM NBA TV
Wed, Apr 15 Toronto 8:00 PM

Only the Heat and Sixers are .500 or over of all the teams we play. We play Toronto twice, Indiana twice, Nets, Knicks, Charlotte, and Detroit

Even if we go 5-5 that is a 39-43 record and that will get us in the playoffs quite easily.
