View Full Version : Would you build your team around Gilbert Arenas if he was 21 years old?

I here a lot of people say they would never want to build their team around Arenas because of his low efficiency and that a guy like him could never take a team to the championship as the best player on the team.

Here is my question, would you take Arenas and build your team around him if he was 21 years old and always healthy?

NOTE: This doesn't have to do with any other players in the league, just a simple if you would want him to be the best on your team or not?

No

first of all because there are only TWO point guars i woudl build my team around, Magic and Robertson.

Second, i utterly dislike Shoot First me myself and I point guards.

Worked for Iverson. It worked for Gilbert 2 years ago. When he gets healthy, it will work again. When Gilbert is on, there is no guard in the NBA that can stop him.

i voted yes, he a terrific scorer and can also rack up assists if he wants to. and he has the record of MOST POINTS BY A LAKER OPPONENT IN STAPLES CENTER with 60 big points

In my opinion, Arenas is just as potent as Wade. Individually, he's as good as they come, but this is a team game...

Well, now that I look at it.... at 21, im not so sure. He wasnt all that back then. If he had his pre-injury skills at that age though, id do it in a heartbeat.

Yes, if he was not injury prone. Because i'm not going to build around him if he always gets injured.

He is too much of a ball hog.
I really dislike point guards that don't distribute the ball.

In hindsight in real life, no.

But If he were 21 and I knew he would be as potent as he is (maybe was), and would be healthy, then absolutely. I think people forget just how sick this guys scoring was a few years back.

Depends on what the alternative is, because there are clearly better options than Arenas.

I quite like Gil, but I'd still have to answer with a resounding "no."
He's like the Iverson of jumpshots.
...and I also think that 'Tawn is the best player on that team regardless of stats.
...and I also think that Butler may not be as "good" as Arenas, but he's got more of the formula to be a winning player.

Hell...no....Gilbert is one of the most overrated players of all time. Build a team around him??? Are you serious?? Is he Kobe Bryant all of a suddent? Magic Johnson? Gilbert is a guy who takes a ton of shots at a low percentage and gets his points no matter what. He's not a guy who makes players around him better, and he's not a guy that can really lead a team as the number one guy.

Got to put west on there too. He handled the ball almost as well and shot better.
If Arenas hadn't been on Golden State and had real coaching early in his career, he'd probably be a lot more efficient.

Yeah, but how many guys can lead a team as the #1 guy?

How many guys have actually won titles as the #1 guy?

Just because you haven't doesn't mean you aren't a star player.

Well...he's not a superstar. He's more like a Ben Gordon who takes more shots at a lower clip. Despite the Wizards being pretty injured over the past few seasons...they've still had a core of Arenas, Jamison, and Butler and haven't been able to win.

How many guys can lead a team as the number one guy? Hmm...LeBron, Kobe, CP3, Howard, KG, Tim Duncan...looks like all the contenders this year. Arenas IMO is NOT a guy you can BUILD a team around. I think the fact that he used to jack up 25 shots to get his 25 PPG, hit a couple game winners, and is a loud mouth extrovert may have gotten him to the point where this question is even asked. He's really a 2nd or really good 3rd option if he wasn't a ball hog. Definitely not worth the contract he got.

He can dish the ball and score. He's just too injury-prone to try and build a team around.
