KEYS TO VICTORY
Balance: Sidney Crosby’s lingering groin injury forced him to miss two consecutive games and his status is uncertain for Sunday’s showdown in Dallas. The Penguins have overcome the loss of their captain because they’ve gotten contributions from throughout the lineup. Pittsburgh’s “role players” will have to step up their game to make up for Crosby’s absence.

Don’t Overlook: The Dallas Stars are a dangerous team and can’t be taken lightly. They are struggling right now - losing four consecutive games - and are fighting for a playoff spot. Dallas is a desperate hockey club and will throw everything at Pittsburgh. The Penguins better be ready for a fight.

LOWDOWN ON THE STARS

Even though the Dallas Stars don’t boast a lineup full of superstars, head coach Dave Tippett always fields a competitive, hard-working team and this year is no different. The Stars, much like the Penguins, find themselves fighting for their playoff lives. As of Saturday afternoon, Dallas is sitting in the 10th spot in Western Conference standings with 65 points. However, they don’t have to look too far ahead or in the rearview mirror to realize that several teams – Columbus (68), Anaheim (67), Edmonton (65), Minnesota (65), Nashville (64), St. Louis (62), Los Angeles (61) and Phoenix (59) – are all desperately trying to finish in the top eight.

The Stars hovered around the .500 mark for much of the season until an incredible run in late January/February. Dallas won seven of eight games and appeared to have a postseason berth locked up but the bottom fell out at the end of the month. The Stars have lost four consecutive games and dropped to the No. 8 spot. Dallas is looking to stop its slide against the Penguins.

I heard from the Tribune he was out. Unless they switched him to a game-time decision.

DALLAS — He skated harder Saturday than he has in days, but Penguins captain Sidney Crosby dared not pronounce himself ready to play today against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Arena.

Crosby, third in the NHL with 79 points, has not played the past two games due to a sore groin. He tested the injury yesterday during a fun-filled practice at Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Duncanville, Texas.

"I skated harder than I did (Friday at a morning skate) in Chicago; I felt like I was able to," Crosby said yesterday. "Hopefully, I don't feel any more soreness (today)."

The Penguins and Stars play at 2 p.m. locally, leaving Crosby without the benefit of a morning skate to assess his status. He said skating during pregame warm-ups was "possible."

"If I have... the thought I'm good to go, I'm going to give it the best shot I can," said Crosby, who joked his teammates "probably don't want (him) back" given their 2-0-0 mark in the games he missed this week.

Interim coach Dan Bylsma suggested the opinions of team trainers will carry significant weight into the decision regarding Crosby's return to the lineup.

this may sound awful, but i wouldnt mind if he doesnt play today. maybe this is exactly what we need. hear me out... sid went down last year and geno exploded, and we had a great run at the end. maybe with sid goin down this year, and geno already playing amazing, somebody else will step up too. (staal? sykora? KUNITZ?) crosby isnt going to be out much longer, if even today. this gives us a kick in the butt tellin us to get movin. then when sid comes back the team will be red hot. just a thought

Maybe Sid needs a break. After all, everyone outside the Pens organization seems to be a hater, and he could probably use a few days off. I don't blame him. I agree, let someone step up and fill the void.

i dont think he should play until we lose a game. (unless we go on some kind of 15 game win streak) this does remind me a little of last year. remember what happened when he got hurt and we beat montreal 1-0 the next game then started pulling off the tough wins. sounds like a familiar start to a familiar story. let him rest.

I'd probably prefer not rushing him back as well. Will Sykie be playing? I ask due to...

Crosby, the team captain and top-line center who has missed the past two games because of a left groin injury, filled in at Sykora's spot on the right side with center Evgeni Malkin and left winger Ruslan Fedotenko.

"He might have to be careful," Crosby joked about Sykora. "He didn't practice, so, if I get a couple more practices on the wing, watch out."

Interim coach Dan Bylsma said Crosby and Sykora are day to day and could play today against Dallas. There is no morning skate because it's a 3 p.m. game, so Sykora, who has not missed a game because of the injury, is expected to skate in the pregame warmup and determine if he can play. Crosby might do the same.

"Yeah, that's possible," said Crosby, who was able to skate a lot harder than he did in a morning skate Friday in Chicago. "If I have any ounce of thought that I'm good to go, I'm going to give it the best shot I can."

Then again, considering the Penguins are 3-0 with a total of five goals against in games Crosby has missed this season -- the past two to the groin, one earlier to a knee injury -- he wonders if his teammates are in a hurry for him to return.

"They probably want to keep me away right now," he said.

the change definitely sparked us but i'm going to have to say that getting gonchar back is what gave us the shot in the arm. too bad he didn't get a point today. but everything that he does is even more noticeable now than it has been the last three years.
