Just started listening to the game.

Schafer stole second, Anderson batted him over, Escobar got one.

McCann hit a sac fly to the warning track to score Schafer.

Freeman lined to the walled to score Anderson and Escobar.

Game tied 3 - 3.

After making a running catch (IN LEFT) to end the inning, Schafer belts a homer to put the Braves up 4 - 3.

It'll be interesting to see what the Braves do with Schafer. He may play his way into the lineup, but J. Anderson went 1-3, and the Braves just spent $2.5mil on G. Anderson and another $1.5mil on M. Diaz. May serve Schafer well to spend at least half the season in AAA. Great to see him crushing the ball though, and playing good defense to boot.

I would like to see us start with Josh and Garrett Anderson. If Josh or Matt Diaz struggle I think we could see Schafer pretty quick (If Diaz struggles Josh would play lf with Garrett). I am excited for spring training to start. I think Kotchman and Franceur are the keys - if they both bounce back the Braves have the offense and pitching to win the division. Rumor has it Wil Ohman may sign for $1 mill - if so, I would sure like to see the Braves keep him for that amount.

Baseball is back, feels great. not bad for the first game, obviously it's only the first game, but still you're allowed to have impressions. Freeman obviously stood out, driving in half the runs, didn't even know the guy was invited b/c of his injury, apparently he was.

Heyward got a gopher ball with a K, it's all good he'll get many more at-bats. Schafer flashing some power, nice start for him, 2 K's though only bad part, but also did still a base. JJ was rusty, can't tell if Jo-Jo was since he normally has those outings but I'll take it, Acosta and Marek looked good.

Franky well....at least he didn't strike out, still though ouch. He'll get plenty of at-bats though so he should (or rather I hope) be fine.

Jon93405
02-26-2009, 01:12 AM
How about Marek?

0H, 0BB, 1K in an inning of relief.

That's a good start after not giving up a single run in 12 innings during the Arizona Fall League. The "other guy" in the TEX deal is worth watching.

I love to poke fun at Frenchy but that's ridiculous. He may or may not meet our need but to hope he fails doesn't exactly help our cause. Whether he succeeds or fails directly affects our chances of winning as long as he occupies a roster spot with the Braves.

Man, it's one game. And the first game back even. Take it easy.

The thing I hate about ST is you want to get excited about good results and deny bad results. I only use ST results to see how young players have matured and to watch position battles. Frenchy is going to start in RF no matter what, so I don't get worked up till he starts going 04, 3 LOB during the real games. I only care who makes the roster and I only care about the 162 regular season games.

Saw Hanson pitch. Heres a break down of what i saw:

Initial Thought: WOW. 96 MPH on FB in his first Inning. I was a bit surprised to see him in that range. However, you could tell that he had that "... try to hit this" mentality and bc of this his pitches were erratic. Tall and as a result his pitches have that downward sink. In the 2nd Inning he was more consistent in the strike zone when he lowered his FB to the 93-95 range...where i thought he would have been all along.

Stuff:

FB.... was touching 96 but he was more comfortable at around 93-95 range. Great sinking action which makes his FB hard to drive by hitters. Easy motion on his FB.

Curve....just nasty in the 80 MPH range. Used it on All Star Carlos Lee and make him look foolish with that SO.

Slider... was around the 84-87 range. Great bite on this pitch.

I didnt see any other pitch but i might be wrong. You could tell that Hanson came out with huge adrenaline... which is evident by his 96 MPH FBs....he had some bone head errors like lead off walk...HBP (although it should make a good impression with his teammates)... All in all, you could really tell the difference in Hanson's pitches and everyone elses..guy has tremendous stuff and once he settles down he will look more and more like what he did in the 2nd inning. Cant wait to see how he comes out in his second outing.

"Tommy Hanson gave up two runs in two innings of relief Thursday against the Astros.
Both runs came after he walked the leadoff man and hit the second batter he faced in his first inning of work. Apparently, the pitchers weren't happy about the way the balls were rubbed up in a game the Braves won 8-7. Roy Oswalt also hit a batter, and Braves started Jorge Campillo walked two and gave up five hits."

For those worried about Gonzo's performance:

No physical problems with Gonzalez, who said he was on a pitch limit. He threw 21 pitches.

Said his elbow feels great, no pain or soreness at all, for first time since before his surgery. Said he had some discomfort pretty much every time out last season, that this is first time it’s been this good in a long time.

As for his velocity, he insisted that throughout his career, he’s always thrown 86-88 mph until the last week or so of spring training, “when the lights come on.” Said that’s just the way he’s done it, and that it’s been successful.

If Freeman isn't careful he may start to create a bigger buzz than Heyward.

Wouldn't that be nice if both of them turned into a couple of homegrown, 30 HR mashers. They could lock up our 3rd and 4th spots for the first half of the next decade.

After seeing some of the kids play for the first time live, it seems like we have guys that are worthy of the hype. Obviously Freeman has been impressive, and I knew Heyward was a big guy, but didn't realize just how big and strong he is.

And no more needs to be said about Tommy Hanson. He was clocked at 99 mph?! Wow, kid is filthy. Should be a fun season watching these guys progress.

"Both runs came after he walked the leadoff man and hit the second batter he faced in his first inning of work.

Hanson's hit batter was retaliation. Oswalt hit our SS in the elbow so Hanson hit their SS in the back. More impressively, I don't think anyone said anything to Hanson first. I think he did it on his own.

Kudos to the Astros and especially to Tejada. Astros didn't do anything and Tejada knew what the pitch was for and simply took his base. End of story.

Oh, and the umps didn't over-react either.

Cant say to much bad about Hanson, the runs he gave up was on a sac fly and a hit that the batter was way late on. Not to mention the pitch was on the outside corner.

Everything he threw was filthy even his fastball. Even though he gave up runs his pitches were missing down. Great showing overall though.

I still dont know whats better, his slider or curve.

Be truthful...Do you see Frenchy as the long term option in RF?

I see our 2012 lineup as this (Assuming Chip might only play through '11):

1. Schaefer CF
2. Yunel SS
3. Heyward RF
4. Freeman 1B
5. McCann C
6. Free Agent 3B (Maybe Hicks/Campbell)
7. Kelly Johnson 2B
8. Gorkys LF (Also could be a FA)

1. Hanson
2. Hudson (I think he'll be re-signed long term)
3. Jair

Bullpen is impossible to project. I would assume Kimbral, Marek, and Devall would be up there.

I just don't see that as realistic. I don't think there is a single team in MLB with a homegrown 1-8. We still have a 100 million payroll. We look to have alot of talent but still will have money to spend. (I'm just straight assuming the next part). The only major money we will have tied up (I think Lowe will be traded by 2012) is Hudson (likely 10-12), McCann (8.5), and my guess is somewhere between 8-10 mil for Jair, Kelly, and Yunel. Everyone else is still in arb. Even if Lowe is still there it looks like we would have 20-40 mil to spend. That could easily sign a high average 3B (we don't need the power), a LF if needed, and whatever else needed. This could theoretically be very nice. =]

Not to mention we have the #7 pick in this year's draft. Typically, top 10 draft picks (IF the pick is a successful one) make their way to the major's faster than most other draft picks. Previous #7 draft picks include:

2002 - Prince Fielder (MIL)
2003 - Nick Markakis (BAL)
2005 - Troy Tulowitzki (COL)
2006 - Clayton Kershaw (LAD)
2007 - Matt LePorta (MIL)

That's 5 out of 6 years the #7 draft pick has panned out, rather quickly I might add. Definitely not guaranteed, but with the guy's we have scouting/drafting players, I would venture to guess we have a very good shot at hitting on our draft pick.

Lots of good draft picks if you look from 2000 on, anywhere from the 5th to 15th draft picks. This includes the Braves choosing Jason Heyward with the 14th pick in the 2007 draft. He seems to be very much on the verge of making the move to "The Show."

Hopefully e don't trade him though :(

I truly believe we could've gotten Vazquez without giving up Flowers, and in turn shipped Flowers as the centerpiece to the Yanks for Swisher.

They need an heir for Posada.

But whatever, hopefully he doesn't pan out so I don't feel as bad :)

You're right, we could have given up Hanson, Schafer, Freeman or Heyward instead... but we had to give someone up. You can't trade scrubs for guys like Javier Vasquez.

By the way, the #38 prospect on the Baseball America top 100 list is Jesus Montero... a catcher... for the Yankees.

Actually the deal that was reported before the trade actually happened, was Lilli and Jo-jo as centerpieces. Flowers surprised everybody and we DEFINITELY could have gotten it done without Flowers.

And idk if you keep up with specta much, but montero is prolly the 2nd most overrated prospect behind Austin Jackson

Yankees

Barring a freak injury, I put the chances of that #7 pick being a future all-star at some point at about 85%. Our scouting department is usually running circles around all but a few teams. I read yesterday where we wanted DeVall, Stovall, and Spruill at pick 40 and ended up getting ALL THREE. Devall was widely regarded as the second be LHP in the draft. I can't wait for us this year =]. That #50 or so pick (looks like it'll be like 52) should be nice too (#51 '06 Jeff Locke, #49 '06 Chris Tillman, #46 '04 Gallardo ). I would kinda like a college guy, just because most of our studs are 20-22. Best available has to be taken though.

One thing I noticed in the game was that kotchman looked slimmer and changed his batting stance. Hanson did look mighty impressive, freeman has got a sweet swing as well..just wish I could watch it on TV instead of ESPN 360 on replay cause 360 is slow and sucks.

Kawakami the best pitching performance so far from our starters this spring. 2 innings, 1 hit, 1 K, 2/3 GB/FB ratio. Not bad at all, wonder if he will go 3.

I think all of you guys are dead wrong. Heyward needs to start in A+. I see no reason to skip him through two very important levels in the minor leagues. One of my boy's KJ 2-3, run scored, 2 RBI's and a K, esco a perfect 2-2 with a BB.

i know its way too early to tell, but it looks like jason heyward already has a pretty good perception of the strikezone at close to the major league level, although its is only spring training. But that is one of the major factors that keeps a player in the minors, we might be seeing him earlier in the majors earlier than we thought, or earlier than i did.

and he hit that against a lefty, that is very important for him to hit off lefties. If he does get balance of hitting of lefties and righties then it is truly his no matter what schafer does.
